Is anyone else having this issue with the latest update?  If I try to build smart previews and convert to dng on import, it will always say the smart previews failed to build.  If I build smart previews after import it's fine. It just seems like a new bug. I did have one complete crash as well, before the October update the software has been pretty stable.  This is my system info.

"do I have to worry about those images that triggered the alert when uploaded"

Only if you must have Smart Previews!

You can create, or delete, them at any time from the menus.

I am curious- why do you need Smart Previews?

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 13.2 Photoshop 25.5, ACR 16.2, Lightroom 7.2, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 14.0.2, Windows-11.

Thank you Ryan. Yes, it's very useful not to be attached to an external drive. But I am not sure how to make it work.

I imagine because of the possibility of working on files whithout needing external drives. Especially when traveling - on planes, on trains. Problem is: I don't know hiw it works ...

Or I can work from my bed or from an armchair without an external drive dangling dangerously over the edge. Which happens often.

Photos imported into LR Classic 10.0 do not show up in the Previous Import collection after LR is closed and reopened. This is a recent development, but when I went back to LR 9.4 it was still present. Also, and maybe related, when an import from an SD card is completed, I get a message that Smart Previews could not be built for the listed files (all of them) and then it proceeds to build Standard Previews. I haven't found anywhere online that anyone else is having such problems, so it seems as if it isn't a LR problem. I am using the latest version of Windows (20H2). Any ideas what to look for or how to troubleshoot this problem?

Re smart previews, Adobe has acknowledged a bug:

https://feedback.photoshop.com/conversations/lightroom-classic/lightroom-classic-some-smart-previews...

Please add details of your issue to the bug report, and be sure to click Like and Follow at the bottom of the first post. That will make it a little more likely that Adobe will prioritize a fix, and you'll be notified when the bug's status changes.

The bug report has a workaround posted by an Adobe employee you might try.

Thanks for your response. After posting I found in the related conversations (above right) a post called "Previous Import" clears immediately Following the suggestion therein, I reset my preferences and this solved both my problems. I didn't find it when I did my search before posting, unfortunately. I suppose my preferences file somehow got messed up. I'm finding out I actually had a lot of non-default preferences as I try to get it back to the way I had it. 🙂

I just did a quick test and it doesn't happen to me, so there may be particular details triggering the symptoms for you. If you can reliably reproduce this, I suggest you post a bug report in the official Adobe feedback forum, where Adobe wants all bug reports and feature suggestions:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/send-bug-report-feature-request-adobe/

Be sure to include the first ten lines of the menu command Help > System Info.  Provide all the details, rather than linking back to this thread -- experience shows that Adobe developers tend not to follow the links.

"I reset my preferences and this solved both my problems."

Excellent. LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior.  Though I hadn't seen reports before that it could fix the smart-preview issue.

LR has a serious architectural design flaw that corrupts the preferences file, and Adobe has never bothered to fix it.
