Lightroom Classic freezing everywhere

I have been using Lightroom since version 1. Now I need to find another tool, because I am wasting too much time for technical issues. Actually, I cannot do anything, because Lightroom is freezing the whole system any time.

My system: Windows 11 22H2 (22621.1928), all updates installed, latest AMD Radeon drivers (23.5.2.), latest Lightroom Classic (12.4.) from the photography plan. No problems with any other tool except Photoshop, which is also freezing. My CPU is i7-9700k, with 16Gb memory and 5 disks, of which 3 SSD SATA, 1 HD SATA, the system disk is M.2 SSD, where also all apps are installed. The lightroom catalog is in one SSD SATA and the images are in another SSD SATA.

The freezing happens any time, whatever I am doing. The freezing happens 1-5 minutes after started using Lightroom.

What I have tried:

  • disabled GPU - freeze
  • optimized the catalog many times - freeze
  • created a new catalog and imported the old one into the new - freeze
  • created a new catalog and imported only 30 images (instead of 35.000) - freeze in export

In the freeze, Lightroom does not write anything to any log nor does it give any error message. It just freezes the whole system and I need to do hard reboot.

I have contacted Adobe support and they could not help me.

No other app is doing anything like this. I use the computer mainly for real-time apps, like Studio One, Vegas and for other demanding purposes. No problems there.

It seems I need to find another app for image processing and for their storing.

It is possible that I have a solution. I changed AVX offset in BIOS settings to 2 instead of auto (probably 0). Now I am able to export. Let's see if this is sufficient and if other freezes come.

By the way, do you have a third party Overclock app running, MSI Afterburner for example?

An AMD, so take a look at:

I had the same problem but was able to resolve it by going into Lightroom preferences, performance and turning off "Use Grafics Processor". Turning off GPU at the Windows level did not resolve the freezing, but doing it through Lightroom Preferences did.

@kari-s  says:

This is almost always a hardware malfunction or a bad driver somewehre. Please update all of your drivers. Please run diagnostics on all hardware for malfunction, including the cooling system. It does not matter that other software does not cause this to happen, that is irrelevant; Lightroom Classic stresses the hardware more than other software does.

I have updated all possible drivers and software. That is my constant practice.

It is very probable that this AVX offset setting in BIOS was the solution.

But I also said you should do other things.

That got my interest, so I used google on it. Odd that it may have been set to 0, odder, that if in auto, 0 would have been selected. Apparently 0 overclock, and may cause issues in general. And LrC is known to be a overclock hater.

Hi

I was experiencing the same in the last months, with an i7 computer, 32 GB
RAM, and a GPU. The system worked very well until recently.
I attempted the same steps as you were advised (including starting a new
catalog) - and nothing helped.

I decided to order a new stronger system - that I hope will help! (possibly
not, following your input).

If this will continue I will need to abandon Lightroom.

"and a GPU"

But is it a sufficiently powerful GPU? You really want something with 8gb or more of RAM and definitively (ie not "Windows recommended") up-to-date drivers.

Oh - and we don't really need your phone numbers, either. It's not smart to post personal information like that on a public forum, if you care about your privacy.
