Question

MacOS Sonoma (beta 2) appears to have problems with Lightroom Classic

I am getting very frequent crashes using Lightroom Classic 12.4 in the new MacOS Sonoma beta2.

Simply switching to a new collection will give me a full crash (app disappears) almost everytime.

I haven't noticed any problems with Lightroom (cloud) yet.

MacOS Sonoma beta 2 on a MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max.

Note that Lightroom Classic 13 was released today, and Adobe says that version is compatible with macOS 14 Sonoma.

I updated to Sonoma 14.0 today (non-beta), Apple M1 Pro. Now none of my adobe apps work, photoshop and illustrator being the two main.

Without anything to contribute to a solution, only in the event that it is helpful as an additional data point, I am also experiencing the issue on a 2023 M2 Mac Studio 64 GB RAM Sonoma 14.0 2TB internal drive.

As the response already provided by Rikk Flohr (Adobe Employee) in the 'Pinned Reply' at the top of this thread indicates - 'we do not support Adobe's current shipping products on unreleased OS's.'

If you need to use Sonoma, then best you set up a dual boot system to run it along with Ventura.

Also Photoshop 2023, and Photoshop Beta are both pretty much unusable on Sonoma. The app become unresponsive after a few (less than 10) seconds of use. This is NOT an issue I expect Adobe SUPPORT to get involved with. But it would be nice for Adobe DEVELOPERS to achnowledge that they can reproduce it in their unit tests, and if not, they are free to get in touch with us friendly(!) customers who are willing to assist them via screen share, etc.

The beta 3 of Sonoma seems to work perfectly. Both LRc and Photoshop are operating smoothly and with any issue yet.

This afternoon (Wednesday - July 5, 2023) I updated to MacOS Sonoma (beta 3) from (beta 2) and the issue of Lightroom Classic crashing often and randomly seems to have resolved itself. This morning I was running MacOS Sonoma (beta 2) and was encountering many of the same issues listed here in this discussion. This afternoon, after updating, I am not. So, to recap, updating your MacOS Sonoma from beta 2 to beta 3 may prevent Lightroom Classic on MacOS Sonoma from crashing. Cheers!

Have the iCloud Drive issues been resolved as well where some folders stored locally will unload themselves along with many folders previewing at 0kb.

Same issue on MBP 14'' with Sonoma Beta 2. Althought bugs are expected with a beta realease, it's annoying that the only app causing problems (out of 300 other apps/software installed on my mac), is Lightroom Classic.

I'm running Lightroom Classic 12.4 (or at least trying to) on my M1 MacBook Pro and M2 MacBook Air. It crashes repeatedly when I try to access collections or when using the filmstrip. I've rebooted the Macs (often) and reset the preferences (also often). It's made the app unuseable. I also run Photoshop (the beta too), Bridge, InDesign and Premiere Pro and so far have no issues with them. Just Lightroom Classic. It might be all my own fault, given I'm running the developer beta of MacOS Sonoma 14, but if it is the beta, why affect only Lightroom and not the rest? Anyone else having these issues? Or any solutions? Your help would be much appreciated.

I too experience many crashes and an unusable Library Module in LRC 12.4 on MacOS Sonoma Beta 2.  So far, LRC seems to be the only program in my computer that refuses to work with MacOS Sonoma Beta 2.  I'm hoping Adobe will figure this out and issue an update that addresses these issues with their paid software.  I'm paying a monthly subscription to Adobe so I can use LRC.  I will discontinue my membership soon and find an alternative if Adobe doesn't address this!  The whole schpeal about Beta Software not supported is vague considering all of my other software I use daily seem to work just fine with Apple's latest OS.

I just tried another competitor to Lightroom Classic and it works perfectly fine with Sonoma Beta plus it's cheaper per month.  I'm giving Adobe 7 days to update Lightroom Classic to work with Sonoma or I'm cancelling my account.  Can't pay for something I can't use.

Update after the steps done in my reply above.

I completed my catalog backup, booted to recovery, erased the drive and restarted but was never able to boot in recovery mode again. After a few attempts the machine booted to the support screen meaning it's completely dead. Ended up connecting another Macbook and restoring my machine using the DFU method and was able to revert to Ventura. It should be noted, DFU restore is the only way to downgrade OS versions on Apple Silicon devices. You CAN revert the revision of the OS so doing the reinstall would take you from Sonom Build 2 to Build 1. Unfortunately, Apple Silicon machines are not able to reinstall the software they were shipped with from the factory like intel macs.

Back to normal, let's see what LrC pitches once 12.5 enters the chat. Oh, my machine is a 2023 MBP 16 with max spec except for storage which is 4TB. Hope the folks still on Sonoma Build 2 aren't too impacted.
