Definitely get the drivers up to date.
I don't believe there's a problem with Radeon HD cards, and FWIW, I'm using a XFX AMD Radeon R9 280 with 3Gb. You're going to need a recent generation card with at least 2Gb of memory such as the AMD R9 2xx series or nvidia’s Geforce 700 or 900.

Just for clarity, where exactly is the major slowdown(s) when the video card does not pass the OpenGL test? My Radeon HD 5700 is failing the test, but Lightroom still feels quite snappy. Since I just purchased LR, though, I have yet to do any real image editing.
What is the thing I should try to determine whether it is worth downgrading my video drivers or not?

Hi, same issue here.
I won't downgrade my drivers so I post here to hopefully get a real solution (hardware acceleration feature made me update to LR6...).
I count on you Adobe/AMD engineers!

Here is something I did that worked for my system. I have a Lenovo Laptop running Windows 8.1 64 bit with AMD Radeon HD 7600G + 7400M Dual Graphics adapters. Based on the suggestions in this forum, I attempted to roll AMD Catalyst to the older version 14.4 after uninstalling AMD Catalyst 14.12. So, I uninstalled AMD Catalyst 14.12 and rebooted the system. Then I tried installing AMD Catalyst 14.4. But installation of Catalyst 14.4 was failing while installing display adapters. Hence I tried a different approach.
I opened device manager and checked if Windows has latest drivers for the display adapters (by clicking on "Update Driver" and letting Windows search net to find the latest driver. Then I installed AMD Catalyst 14.12 (the latest version) and chose Custom installation. In the panel that followed, I unchecked "AMD Display Drivers" so that the Display Drivers installed by Windows are not overwritten. This installed only the AMD Catalyst and a few other utilities. I then started Lightroom CC and it was able to find my displays and use accelerators. I have left below a dump post installation info from Lightroom. Photoshop also detects the display. I hope this works for others too.
It appears that the culprit seems to be the device drivers distributed with AMD Catalyst.
I am not sure if this speeded up anything. Certainly the sliders in Lightroom are working well and updating the display in real-time. There is still an annoying display refresh that happens if I keep holding on to the slider for a longer time.

Here's what worked for my setup.
I use an nvidia 960 card.
First I experimented with doing clean installs of the drivers. That didn't work.
But I noticed that when I used the default windows driver (the non-nvidia kind) I got acceleration. Though none of the other advantages of my graphics card.
Then I went to this page: TweakGuides.com - Nvidia GeForce Tweak Guide and learned about Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).
After applying this free program in safe mode and reinstalling the nvidia driver, acceleration was available.
So, for all you nvidia users: try this before reinstalling lightroom or reinstalling your entire system. It took about 20 minutes in all.
This might also work for AMD users, since the program provides an AMD setting.

Here is a Me too. I installed the original Dell provided driver for an AMD Radeon HD 6990 and saw the GL MAX Combined Texture image. I didn't see this with newer drivers but it still didn't work.

Scott,
The card does not support the min Open GL required.
At least that's what it look like.
It has the horse power .... just not the correct Open GL.
This card was released in 2011 ... early?
bummer.... just my 2 cents.

I just see that Creative Cloud 2015 has been released and Lightroom has a bunch of new features.
I cant get to my PC to check Lightroom for a while - I wonder if this openGL bug has been fixed.

No - still got the bug.
Since there had been no official reply to this thread from Adobe for a long time, and an update of CC today, I thought that the fix would be in the update.
But I was wrong.
This is really going on too long now Adobe - surely you can fix this one!!

As Geoff says, this is mainly on the GPU manufacturers.

Then I would ask if there was suggestion by Adobe when launching the product that it may not work with some AMD cards? AMD is not some obscure GPU company to be skipped in the testing process, almost half of the PCs are running with their graphic cards. Adobe of course cannot test the product on all possible H/W configurations before launching, but we can safely assume that they tested it on a big enough set of GPUs mandatory including the professional AMD FirePro and n-Vidia Quadro. And nevertheless, a product that works only with FirePro drivers at least one-year old is being launched. Do you think they didn't know this at the very beginning?

Well, I'll be the wet blanket then - While Lightroom does finally recognize my GPU, with the new driver, it freezes beyond repair, everytime I'm scrolling through the pictures. And to make things worse - it freezes when I try to uncheck the "Use Graphics Processor" box...
Basically it has become unusable.

Likewise, with Win7 AMD 6870 graphics card, and Win8.1 AMD 7640g, the new drivers make the GPU recognized, but on both machines after opening the raw file in Photoshop CC2015 from ACR 9.1 the screen freezes and the only option is to manually close the program (not responding). So . . . rolling back the drivers to the working 14.4 of long ago.

I also spoke too soon.
Whilst the graphics acceleration now works and is very impressive, a few clicks between develop and library mode and LR is dead.
Once closed, I re-opened LR and had no problem turning off acceleration (some people have said this isnt possible).
I have no other problems (yet) so no need to revert to 14.4
The fault I see is a horizontal white bar/box across the top of the grid view - covering the top 20% of the grid-view

Same problem, crashes in develop module. At least it allows me to disable the GPU acceleration. Very frustrating. Is Adobe playing the waiting game? Get people frustrated enough that they upgrade their GPU for no other reason than getting Lightroom to work as promised? I'm very disappointed, the GPU acceleration was the sole reason why I upgraded from 5.7. Previously I recommended Adobe to everyone, but now not so much. AMD messed up too, amazing they didn't test with Lightroom before the release.
To anyone who has not yet upgraded from 5.7, save your money. This latest release is a dog. It's much slower than 5.7 without the GPU acceleration, and the GPU acceleration may or may not work even if you meet the hardware requirements. I feel cheated.
