P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

I would really like them to add a batch remove feature. For example I shot an event where multiple people walk up to a podium, take something, and leave. I cannot have a tripod, there's and EXIT sign in ugly bright green above every person. Because I'm handheld, I can't simply remove one, and then sync to apply to all, because the position of the sign moves slightly. Ai should be able to recognize the shape of basic objects like a giant EXIT sign, and "move"/reposition where the removal is happening within the image. It should recognize the object and adjust positioning for batch removal processing. Thanks!

Hello Rick, it´s been a while since an error appears when I use the generatuve remove, at first it works perfectly but when I ccontinue working and come back to the photo it says I have to update. I Update it, but the same error appears. I already updated lr to the latest version and give permission to access the disk. I dont know what else to do.

Im working with a Macbook pro.

Hope there´s a solution since  this is my work tool.

Thanks, Ana

I suggest making the Generative AI removal tool e better at erasing text

Please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot) showing where Remove doesn't do a good job on the text -- that will show more clearly what the issue is.

Hello,
I edited a RAW file at home in Lr and sent it to someone else to continue editing (no export to JPEG or TIFF, just the RAW file). When the other person opens the file in their Lr, all the edits are active and can be modified, but the edits made with AI only have a flat color, as if generative deletion only works for me… Can you help me with this?
Thanks!

If you did Metadata > Save Metadata To File on the raw before sending it, and then sent it and it's .xmp sidecar (if it's not DNG) to the other person, then they should be able to select the photo in Develop and do the menu command Settings > Update AI Settings. That will recompute all AI masks, including those for Remove.

A more reliable way of sharing raws is to select the photo and do File > Export As Catalog, selecting the options Export Selected Photos Only and Export Negative Files. Then zip up the exported catalog folder and send it along. That will include the previously computed AI masks.

Thank you for your reply, I did several tests and it turns out that we were using 2 different versions of Lr (Classic and Cloud), it seems to be buggy at this level... on the other hand when there are 2 Lr Classic it's perfect it works very well!

I find since the update, that when I select 1 of 3 results for generatove AI remove - once I generate it changes the result and I cannot get it back.  It seems to have lost what was amazing.

Can you provide more details of what you're seeing, preferably a short screen recording attached to your reply?

Generative AI Remove's variations are working in my LR the same as they always have, but I may not be understanding what you're seeing.

Trying to remove a lens glare circle from a pefectly blue sky leaves a definite circle clearly visible - so not good in these circumstances

1. Try selecting a much larger circle around the lens glare.

2. If you applied Remove on top of an AI mask (e.g. Sky or Subject mask), do the menu command Settings > Update AI Settings to recompute the mask.

3. If this doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot). With nearly every one of the many dozen problem photos posted here, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

Just spent an hour processing a gallery and just a few pictures yesterday and today to find that all the AI has been reset.  I have to go to every single photo and "Update all" settings!  It's 10 seconds each photo.  No way to just press a button for the entire gallery to update.  Have to go through each single photo and basically press a button to update and wait 10-50 seconds based on how many edits were made!!!  This is sooo frustrating and costing me time!!!!!!!

@Daniel336694186n1h: "I have to go to every single photo and "Update all" settings!  It's 10 seconds each photo.  No way to just press a button for the entire gallery to update."

In Library, select all the photos and do the menu command Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings. That command will quickly skip over any selected photos that don't need updating.

If after doing this you're still seeing all the photos with AI settings needing updating, then try these steps:

1. Do Help > Updates to verify you're on the latest version of LR (14.3). An earlier version had a bug causing these symptoms.

2. In LR, do Edit > Catalog Settings > General > Show. That will open Windows File Explorer on the current catalog folder.

2. Exit LR.

3. Move the file <catalog>.lrcat-data to the Desktop.

4. Start LR.

5. In Library Grid view (not Loupe view), select all photos and do Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings. That will recompute all the AI masks and create a new .lrcat-data file, which could take a while.

This did not work.  I tried all these steps.

Not only that, but when I use Generative AI and come back to the photo a minute later after working on another the photo, the edits have not been applied.

I've constantly pressed the button to Update All on the photo and I've constantly highlighted all photos and scrolled the menu to "Update all"-- Doesn't work!

I've been regenerating every photo for days, but to no avail. I've lost so much time and days from work because of just trying to finish a gallery.

I have no idea why this change.  I have no idea what I'm going to do for my client's galleries when all edits I've made are not applied  a few minutes later.  Every edit I've made is reset.

All the older, non-generative-AI remove options are still there.

Clone:

Heal:

Content-aware Remove (non-generative AI):

But you might read this short tutorial about how to Generative AI Remove more effectively:

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

Once you spend a few minutes learning to use the tool, it works quite well. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot). With nearly every one of the many dozen problem photos posted here, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

I don't understand why it won't just remove objects without putting something else there. It seemed ok until now, but all of the sudden with the latest update I am trying to just remove a person standing against the wall and leave only the wall, and it keeps replacing the person with a crazy AI monster looking person. It's like it all of the sudden forgets what the word remove means and thinks "remove" means "replace with weird stuff"

@Melodie Yvonne: "I don't understand why it won't just remove objects without putting something else there. "

See this short article for how to remove objects more reliably, replacing them with background rather than AI monsters:

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot). Since the new update 8.3, generative removing is much slower and not as precise as before.
