P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

A ferramente remove mas não cria textura, deixa o local removido desfocado deixando a foto estranha

@brunomendesreal: "The tool removes but does not create texture, it leaves the removed area blurred, making the photo look strange."

Many have observed here that the replacements made by Generative Remove sometimes don't match the photo's tone or noise. To get better matches, these techniques sometimes help:

1. Adobe recommends applying Denoise before Remove. This can reduce the noise, making it more likely the replacement will match.

2. The replacement patch supplied by Adobe Firefly has a maximum size of 2048 x 2048 pixels. If the selected area in the photo is larger than that, then the replacement patch gets upscaled (and blurry). Try removing smaller selections if possible.

3. Conversely, try making a larger selection, even including the entire background. Upscaling of the replacement sometimes won't be noticeable then.

4. Sometimes there's a distinctly visible boundary where the tone or noise don't match. You can often use the heal tool around the boundary to get better feathering and make it less noticeable -- apply Heal in small brush strokes. Or use a Brush mask with maximum feathering, dropping local Texture, Clarity, and Sharpness to their minimum values. Sometimes, making a very raggedy selection around the object makes the boundary less noticeable.

5. For grain/noise in particular, see this post for how to ameliorate the problem by adding the grain back or reducing the grain:

In letzter Zeit bleibt nach dem Generativen Entfernen immer ein heller Fleck zurück (der Bereich, welcher entfernt bzw. maskiert wurde). Das stört sehr!

@moniquek10128778: "Lately, after generative removal, a bright spot always remains (the area that was removed or masked). This is very annoying!"

If you applied Remove on top of an AI mask (e.g. Sky or Subject mask), do the menu command Settings > Update AI Settings to recompute the mask.

If that doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot). With nearly every one of the many dozen problem photos posted here, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

It is hard to stay postive and polite when Adobe's system is so hyper afraid of anything related to human skin. I just don't understand how it can generate realiztic images in seconds but more often than not get's it wrong about recognizing content policies. I'm a full time professional working with ballet dancers. Editing skin is part of my daily work and Adobe's tools consistqntly refuse to work for me. In some poses the leotard or other fabric shifts and I want to 'pull' it back so it covers more. This almost always fails as the system refuses to. It refuses to clean up the bottom of a foot that got dirty in an outdoor session. Good luck trying to fix a twisted strap of a sports bra.

Seriously, stop making the sytem so ultra afraid so people who do portrait work can actually reliably use AI based image editing tool.

Me parece una mejora indispensable, tanto que recomiendo que se incluya dentro de máscaras, ya que estas funcionan muy bien y por ejemplo tras reconocer a una persona, podríamos eliminarla con gran facilidad. Gracias

Thanks for your reply. Do you have any timelines for this improvement?

Hi,

tell me how to us this feature if my computer is behind a Proxy. I can't find any option in LR to fix this problem. It seems LR does'nt use the system settings of Microsoft Windows.

I need a solution!

Working to remove/clean up the bottom of this shoe and instead of JUST removing the black, it alteres the shape of the shoe....

"Working to remove/clean up the bottom of this shoe and instead of JUST removing the black"

A thing to keep in mind with Generative AI Remove is that it is always trying to generate a replacement that it thinks best matches the area surrounding the selection.   So what you don't select is as important as what you select.

In this case, selecting the white part of the heel and the reflecting scuff marks on the sole causes replacements that try to match the back part of the heel and clean part of the sole, without changing the shape of the shoe:

I had to try about 6 variants to find this one.

Sometimes it helps to do two removals. In this case, I first replaced the white part of the heel, and then replaced the white reflective scuff marks:

I looked at perhaps 6-8 variations for each.

A tip: When you're looking at more than the first 3 variations and see one that you think is plausible, make a snapshot by clicking the + button the Snapshots panel. Then you can later review all the saved snasphots very quickly.

Its so frustrating … honestly its sometimes hot but mostly its not. If I try to delete some object it will be replaced with random bull****.  E.g.  if I want to delete a car the actual car will be replaced by another Ai-generated car instead of a reconstruction of the background covered by the first car. This ist artificial stupidity … sorry. ;D

See this short article for how to remove objects more reliably:

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot). Remove means remove! Not add the same object similar to the one you are trying to remove. Give us the option to put directions. Like, "match the wall" etc

@Daniel336694186n1h, removing .lrcat-data and doing batch Update AI Settings on all photos has worked for many others with these symptoms. I don't know why it isn't work for you, unfortunately.  Do you have the latest version of LR installed, 14.3.1?  If you're not positive, do the menu command Help > System Info to triple-check. There was a bug with Update AI Settings that Adobe fixed a couple releases ago.

You could try chatting with Adobe support. To get to a human, go here:

https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html

click on the chat bubble at the bottom, and type "agent".

But beware that Adobe support is notorious for often not helping with difficult technical issues and sometimes will say anything to close out an issue.

@johnrellis

I just updated and still all my galleries still need updating for every single edited photo.  I don't have time to update every photo or try batch update for every gallery (to no avail.)  I feel like it's hopeless.  I've never had major problems like this with Lightroom in all my years having it since 2008.  I'll try support I guess.   If Adobe support cant handle a tech problem like this, who can?  Is there anyone who is a pro tech that I can pay to help me investigate my problem?
