P: (GPU) Develop/Edit view & Export artifacts after 14.4.1 Update (AMD-only) (affects Cr, LrC & LrD)

Hi,
Since just now, I've been experiencing a weird bug / crash in Lightroom Classic (on a Mac), where ALL my photos suddenly are fully covered in artefacts in the Develop module.
(Screengrab from the Develop module in Lightroom Classic)
When I check the linked RAW + JPEG source files in Finder, they all seem ok (they don't look corrupted, nor show any artefacts here), meaning the issue is within Lightroom.
(Screengrab from the RAW source file in Finder)
When I export images out of Lightroom (with any setting, edited or even not edited), the artefacts are also present on the export files.
(Screengrab from the exported JPG image)
This problem started occuring soon after I applied the new AI noise reduction feature on just ONE (1) photo.
I already tried:
- Closing and re-opening Lightroom
- Shutting down (fully), and restarting the computer after 1 minute
- Switching the GPU accelrator setting in Lightroom on/off
MY SPECS
- Lightroom Classic 13.0.1 - Build (202310121438-d2af310c)
- Macbook Pro 16" - 2019
- 2,3Ghz 8-core Intel Core i9
- AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB
- 32GB 2667MHz DDR4 memory
- OS Sonoma 14.4.1
Any help would be greatly appreciated, because this makes the whole software unusable....
Thank you!

We've investigated an issue with the macOS 14.4.1 update that affects systems running AMD series GPUs.
The issue manifests as garbling of/artifacts in images in Develop/Edit views and similar artifacts in Exported images. The problem can afflict Camera Raw (16.2.1), Lightroom Classic (13.2) and Lightroom Desktop (7.2). Restarting the application should restore your Develop/Edit view and return you to the expected Export results.
The hardware manufacturer's will need to identify the cause

I have three LR Catalogues on 3 different portable external HDs—each is used for a different purpose—that I use all the time. This afternoon, all RAW images—whether in native format or DNG format created by LR—on all three HDs, when viewed in Develop Module, suddenly appeared to be corrupted. They look fine in all other modules. JPGs imported into LR look fine. I then opened the same images in Bridge and Capture One. No problem. Then I opened the same raw image in Adobe Camera RAW. Looked fine.
I exported one of the DNG images from LR, expecting that it was just an on screen problem and the export would look good. It looked corrupted as well. I then exported a DNG image from Bridge that looked corrupted on LR. The output was fine.
I'm attaching a screen shot of one of the images in Develop module.
I'm on Sonoma 14.4.1 on a 2020 MacBook Pro with 64GB of RAM.
In general LR Classic is very sluggish these days as well.
I'd appreciate help in resolving this problem as I need to get some images out ASAP and I'd rather not have to do it in Bridge or Adobe Camera RAW or Capture One.

Depending on the graphics processor in your Macbook, you may be stumbling over a bug in a graphics driver released in Mac OS 14.4.1. But before we jump to that conclusion and suggest workarounds, please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

In the middle of editing a batch of photos, the masking tool in LRC v13.5 on my MacBook Pro suddenly can't detect subject, background, sky, etc. (see screenshot below):
I've cleared the cache, rebooted the computer, reset preferences in LRC and the issue prevails. Any inight would be greatly appreciated.

You've got an AMD Radeon 5000-series GPU. Apple released a buggy graphics driver for it in Mac OS 14.4.1. Most people report images covered with static-like noise but a few have reported problems with LR's AI commands:
Users experiencing noise and artifacts can work around the problem by setting Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off. But for problems with AI masking caused by the buggy driver, you're out of luck: For some inexplicable reason, Adobe refuses to allow users to disable use of the GPU by LR's AI commands.
Who knows if/when Apple and AMD will release a fixed driver.

Lighroom - performace > set graphics processor to custom and checking use GPU for display and restarting has worked for me.

"is there an timeline for the dev team to get this taken care of?"
Adobe rarely comments on schedules. If, as seems likely, this is a bug in the AMD driver for the 5300/5500 GPUs, then AMD has to produce a fixed driver and then Apple include it in the next release of Mac OS

I have a similar problem.
I also get the artifacts in the develop module but when I look at the images in the Library module or even export from the develop module the images look fine.
The only way to get around this for me is to switch all apps off and restart the computer. The it works well for a little while and comes back to the artifacts issues at some stage after a day or so. Really wierd and annoying!
My Specs:
- Lightroom Classic 13.2
- Macbook Pro 16" - 2019
- 2,3Ghz 8-core Intel Core i9
- AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB
- 32GB 2667MHz DDR4 memory
- OS Sonoma 14.4.1
Any solution to the problem yet?

This is a known issue, Apple is getting ready for their developers conference so there may be one more release of Sonoma before then. Who knows if this will be fixed or have to wait until summer.

@alsalphotography, "...restart the computer. The it works well for a little while and comes back to the artifacts issues at some stage after a day or so."
Others have reported this workaround also helps:

I am now trying to upload an image to photoshop and its also happening with camera raw. I have edited the performance settings for both camera raw and photoshop and restarted both to no avail. Please advise!

What in the world is going on here?? I have literally never had this issue before but today It has happened multiple times. I have restarted lightroom. Unplugged an external monitor. And created a new Lightroom Cataloge. The first time it happened I solved it by creating a new lightroom cataloge, after that the display cleared up. But I had it happen AGAIN on a different job, created yet another cataloge but the static/fuzz came back.
Does anyone know whats happening here and what my fix would be?
Thanks in advance for any help!

If your Mac has an AMD based CPU, then it's highly likely that your issue is the same as described in https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-gpu-develop-edit-view-amp-export-artifacts-a...
Pleas confirm whether your GPU is an AMD or not as we will merge your thread into above if it is.

Yes, It does look like that is correct! I will take a look at that thread.

@Hines Hands-On Media, the issue is caused by a buggy graphics driver for the AMD 5300/5500 GPUs in the most recent release of Mac OS. See here for workarounds that have helped others:

Hi Rikk, Thank you! This worked. Will you and / or Apple be fixing this problem so that all the other people experiencing this same problem, including me, can use this Graphic Processor once again?

Rikk's pinned reply at the top says, "The team is working with the OS manufacturer to identify the cause and effect a fix."
