Post Camera Raw feedback here

This thread is now closed. Please update to LrC 14.x or LrD 8.x. If you wish to provide feedback, please go to the new article.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look at Generative Remove, which makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions, even on complex backgrounds, with a simple brush stroke. Generative Remove is powered by Firefly AI.

How to use Generative Remove on a desktop:

  • You can find Generative Remove under the newly renamed Remove panel (aka “Heal”).
  • Make sure the “generative AI” checkbox is enabled before you start brushing (note: when unchecked, Lightroom will use Content-Aware Remove to fill your brushed spots).
  • By default, you will be given a moment to refine your selection with an add or subtract brush. Remember to include shadows for a more accurate result! You can also skip this step by holding down ‘CTRL’ on windows or ‘CMD’ on mac as you finish your brush stroke.
  • Once you’re ready to apply and have accepted the terms, Generative Remove will use Firefly AI to remove your distractions and intelligently fill in the space that’s left by the removed objects.
  • Note: stable internet connection is required to use this feature.
  • Generative Remove also lets you choose from multiple variations, so you can pick the one you like best, giving you full creative control.

Checkout the FAQ and Best Practices

Please give it a try and share feedback and/or report variations in this community forum. It would greatly help to include details like which app you are using (i.e., Lightroom Classic or Camera Raw) and other system details. Our team will continually monitor this thread to track issues to improve the future experience.

Update (Dec 2024):  With the new release, it is no longer necessary to perform Generative Remove Operations prior to Cropping.

Update:
Here are some tips if you are having issues with the feature replacing your object instead of removing it.
  • Enlarge your selection - if your brush stroke is too tight, you will have unexpected results.
  • Remember that removing an object means painting over it, its shadow, its reflection, and any non-contiguous pieces. If you leave behind a shadow, a reflection, or a disconnected piece (e.g., a hand on a shoulder), the AI will attempt to create something to cast the shadow, reflect, or complete the unbrushed discontinuous item. You can avoid these issue by following the guidance provided in this linked tutorial. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace

The recommended order for applying edits is:

  1. Denoise
  2. Heal (includes Generative AI Remove)
  3. Crop (includes traditional Cropping, Lens Correction, Transform, or any operation changing the geometry of the image, including round-tripping to PS to use Gen-Expand)
  4. Global Edits
  5. AI Selective edits (Sky, Person, etc)

If you deviate from that, you may see the removed object remain as a ghost image. If this occurs, you will have to use Update AI Settings, which can be found under the Develop module 'Settings' menu.

Great start! For the most part, it does beautifully. I have found it do not do well with depth of field...ie: sharp images against blurry. Secondly, if I make a virtual copy, it does not always transfer. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. This is annoying when dealing with massive amounts of photos and batch editing (as from a wedding). Lastly, if something is along the edge, even with subtract, it replaces the image with something similar.

Thanks for the new feature but the old feature is now broken.  The bandaid does not allow you to move the copy this buble.  When you hover over it the curser never changes so it just cretes a new bandate spot instead of allowing you to move it to a better location.

I used it to try to remove a reflection of light on a shiny wooden table.  It amplified the reflection instead of removing it.

@Bernie33, see this article about how to get Remove to remove rather than replace (e.g. with a brighter reflection):

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

If that doesn't help, upload the original photo to Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar and post the sharing link here. We can take a look...

Selecting an area larger than I had before, and going through a few
variations did create a good result. Thanks for the advice.

@Geanina32797559qrw3, sometimes network firewalls on your computer, local network, or ISP mistakenly block LR's network requests. Try the steps described here:

The generative AI is used to remove objects, not replace. Can you please ALWAYS include an option to remove an item and not replace it with something similar.
For example, I want to REMOVE the handicap sign and gun sign from the door. WHen I select the handicap sign, AI just replaces it with a similar yellow sign.

Thanks! Otherwise, it's pretty cool.

If the AI model is relacing instead of removing, then it's very likely that you've not fully selected/masked the item to be removed. Shadows, reflections and projections not included in your selection/mask will also causethe AI model to replace.

You can see how to avoid this in the below linked tutorial.

Using the JPEG you uploaded, I selected the yellow handicap sign with Object Aware and then added a bit that Object Aware missed, and Remove did a great job of replacing it with the wood door. Ditto for the blue no-smoking sign (below).

I see from the metadata that the JPEG was exported from an original raw Nikon D850 that you cropped inside LR. You should Remove first then Crop.  Remove looks at all the pixels in the original photo, and if you apply Remove after cropping, it's likely you won't select all of the pixels of an object on the edge of the original image. In that case, Remove will generate a replacement trying to match those out-of-crop, unselected pixels, so if there's a bit of the sign left, it will generate another sign as the matching replacement. ("Remove" necessarily must generate a "replacement", though we call replacing something with "background" a "remove".)

The same principle applies to Lens Corrections and Transform, which also crop pixels. But the metadata shows you hadn't applied either.

If this doesn't help, attach the original raw to your reply here, and we'll take a look.

See this article for more detailed instructions on how to use Remove:

Me parece muy interesante, pero entiendo que aún no sé manejarlo bien. Que alguien me corrija, pero intento borrar un zapato de la escena y lo que hace es generar tres zapatos alternativos. ¿Cómo tendría que hacer para borrar y que genere el fondo de la imagen?

Despite my best efforts, I cannot get the remove tool to work.  I tick all the boxes re graphics card, stable internet, having the Generative AI box ticked, updates installed etc etc.  But when I select and brush over something I want to remove, the system goes into action - but having finished, all I get is the area I selected remaining with the original mark up line around it, and nothing changed within that area.  Same applies to all the variations offered.  Frustrating - to say the least!

Check the Opacity slider -- it should be 100. If it's set too low, then you'll get the symptoms you're describing.

When it works it's great, but unfortunately 90% of the time, Generative Remove is more like Generative Replace. I tried to remove a dog that strayed into shot and it replaced it with a BEAR!

Once again, I have to go to Photoshop. All I want to do is remove 4 thin power lines covering clouds. I've tried 3 times and it has done a pretty bad job. I was able to remove power lines in the same photo that were over land - it did a much better job there.
