"Delete From Disk" Bypasses Trash Now

Hi,

I recently upgraded my MacOS to Sonoma (23A344). My Lightroom Classic version is up to date, version 12.5.

Up until this point, my workflow for culling or deleting photos was to go through and reject the ones that I didn't want to keep. Next, I would select all rejected photos and "delete from disk," at which point the photos would appear in the trash. I could then recover any inadvertently deleted photos or empty the trash.

However, I noticed today that when I am selecting the "delete from disk" option, the files disappear from lightroom and the folder (as expected) but they are NOT appearing in the trash.

I tried restarting the computer and deleting other items, none of which have any issue, but those deleted files are not showing up in the trash.

I am working directly from my computer and there is no shortage of free space. When I drag and drop files from the folders to the trash, they appear in the trash. The issue only occurs when deleting via Lightroom.

How do I get items deleted via Lightroom to show up in the Trash again before deleting permanently so I have the safety net of being able to recover them?

The current version of Lightroom Classic (12.5) is not officially compatible with MacOS Sonoma.

Are others having the same issue? Can this bug be reported to Adobe so they fix it in an update?

Adobe reads these forums, so there is no need to file a special bug report (which won't be accepted because version 12.5 is not supported on MacOS Sanoma). If this is a general issue and not an issue with your drive, then I assume Adobe knows about it (or does now).

iMac 24" M1 chip Sonoma 14.0

LrC vs. 12.5

Normally, when deleting a file from LrC, I can choose delete from disc or delete from LrC.  Deleting from LrC works fine but delete from disc gives me an error that the item can't be deleted from disc as the volumn doesn't allow it.  As a work around, I can open the external SDS that I am using, add an empty folder, delete that folder then everything goes back to normal.  I can delete from disc until I shut down and re-open LrC again then I have to go through the same process.  This started happening after the latest update.

I recently installed Lightroom Classic 13.0. When I right click and attempt to 'Remove Photo', I am now getting the following message: '1 (or more) of these files could not be moved to the Trash' and 'The files are on a volume that does not support trash.' Would you like to permanently delete them?' My Lightroom library is (and has been) on an external drive. I also recently upgraded the MAC operating system to Sonoma 14.0. Not sure if this is a Mac issue or a Lightroom issue. Whichever it is, I was previously able to remove the photo to Trash before permanently deleting them. Thoughts?

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

If I delete any photo - by "delete recjevted" or by "delete single photo" - I am asked, whether I want to remove from catalogue or delete from disk.

If I select "delete from disk" ---> the images seem to be deleted (cannot see them anymore in finder), but the images are NOT in the trash bin.

Same if I convert to DNG, with the option activated "delete originals after coversion" --> NOTHING in trash.

  1. This definitely is an error!
  2. Are the images deleted? Or still somewhere and occupying disk space?

I am on Mac OS Sonoma 14.0, with MacBook Pro M1max 2021.

This sounds like a MacOS Sonoma issue. Lightroom tries to move the images to the trash, but if MacOS tells it there is no trash for this disk, then this action will delete the image without going to the trash first. Check the settings of the disk. Is it an external disk? Maybe Sonoma is more picky about some settings then previous versions of MacOS were. How is the disk formatted?

The disk is the internal disk of the macbook 16" M2, so this not the issue.

Lightroom classic v.13 under MacOs Sonoma : the deleted files "delete from disk" do not go to the trash and intead are definitively deleted. I have re-installed LRC several times but it did not fix it.

Anyone having the same issue ? How to fix this ?

The Classic team has reviewed and cannot reproduce this. Do you have steps that work?

If the classic team cannot reproduce, I would agree the Classic team investigates by remotely taking control of my computer.

No, but I have not yet upgraded to Sonoma yet. I always wait for a X.1 update before I upgrade MacOS, so I might do it this weekend now that Sonoma 14.1 is out.

Hi Rikk.
I did a rollback to LrC 12.5 --> also not moving into trash.
LrC 12.5 with Mac OS 13 (all versions) definitely worked and moved deleted images to trash.

For me this looks like as an inconsistency between LrC and Mac OS Sonoma.
Whether Apple or Adobe can/will/want solve this ... no idea from my side, I kind of "sit between 2 chairs".

Hi MBeckerAC.

Are your photo synced with iCloud ? When i move the photos out of iCloud then everything is fine meaning they go to the trash. The helpdesk of apple have insvestigated my computer and its settings and they confirm that everyhing is fine on their side and they conclude that it is bug in Lightroom.

Hi christianb58582241,

my photos are not synced with iCloud Photos, but the LR image folder is a subfolder of "Documents" ...
.... and "Desktop and Documents" is synced with iCloud Drive.

Hi MBeckerAC.

Sorry, I realize that I was unclear. I am exactly in the same configuration as you are : my photos are in a folder synced with iCloud Drive and NOT synced with iCloud photo. When I move with LRC some photos in a folder out of iCloud Drive, then the deleted photo from this folder go to the trash.

I have just found this : When the photo are located in internal disk + iCloud, the issue exits. when I move the photos (using Lightroom for the move) out of iCloud (external or internal disk) the issue deseapears meanning that the deleted files go to the trash.

So I deduct that last version of LRC has problem working with iCloud, which is annoying because i use iCloud as backup and remote access.
