Raw+jpg import but can't see only the raw in Lightroom classic - How to stack Raw + Jpeg

Dear all,

Sorry for posting, but I've been searching for days, and can't find a solution to my problem. I'm on a Mac, I use Lightroom Classic, I shoot with a Sony A9, and I have shot this ummers photos in Raw+jpg.

I was a big fan of Aperture, used that for many years, and never got as proficient in Lighroom as I was in aperture. But, I still figured I must be able to learn how to import my RAW+JPG-files (import both), but only see one image (the raw) in Lightroom. But I can't. Even if I have unchecked the "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos", I get double of every photo in my library, and I cant seem to find any way to automatically stack the jpg+raw files that belong together.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! And sorry for not being able to figure this out. I'm sure it must be quite obvious, because working with double images in Lightroom is surely not something anyone does?

Thank you all for your replies! It seems that my problems were indeed casued by importing all from a card on which there were some images not shot in RAW+jpg. When I transferred the card to the HD and separated these sets of images, it worked as expected.

To see separate JPGs or separate Raws in that case, IS as expected. Only when specifically shot as Raw+JPG will the out-of-camera filenames match (with same image number), and therefore only then can they be automatically paired by Lightroom Classic. Shooting a Raw and then immediately afterwards a JPG, the image number will have incremented in between.

I understand that, and that was not the case here. I first shot some test-images in jpg only mode. Then I swtichted to RAW+JPG mode for the rest/vast majority of images. However, when I tried to import these images in the same batch, lightroom no longer saw the connection between raw+jpg.

First off, on Preferences, in the General tab, click on the option to treat JPEG files next to the RAW files as separate photos. IMO, not doing so just causes me pain. You would only see the RAW files.

Second off is to consider auto stacking by capture time, selecting a time in between stacks of 0.

First, if you don't want the paired JPGs it may be possible to set the camera not to save that in the first place? 😄  I switch my own camera between JPG-only / Raw-only and have never had cause to regret this. It does negate the possibility of ever mistaking a "sole" JPG (which lacks any Raw partner), for the "surplus" JPG from a Raw+JPG pair,

If I do ever need a camera processed JPG exceptionally, and I have shot just Raw, the camera (like most AFAIK) can internally Raw-convert one for me on demand, after the fact. In my own camera's case that happens under a fresh image number so the resulting filename stands distinct from that of the initial exposure.

Next, it is a bit more of a palaver to do but if the camera does insist on shooting JPG with Raw, you can selectively copy-import just the Raws off the camera card.

As for unchecking the "treat JPGs next to raw as separate" option, it is important to note that this setting only controls the behaviour of a following import. It has zero effect for photos that have already been imported. Also that NOT treating Raw+JPG as separate, necessarily relies on matching file naming across that pair of original files and that both live in the same folder.

All that said [and do please PLEASE test this carefully for yourself first on some sample images within your own system, and after a proper backup of files and Catalog, before doing anything wholesale] the following sequences have just worked fine for me on LrClassic Windows version 10.2.

To change unified Raw + JPG thumbnails into separately editable paired Raw and JPG thumbnails: set the "treat separately" option to ON. Synchronise each folder where the images live, accepting the addition of [so-many] new images, while noting that there may also be other files present in the same folder, that you do NOT want to now see imported.

To change separately visible Raw and JPG image pairs into unified Raw+JPG thumbnails - discarding the JPGs' edits and working hereafter only from the Raws - set the "treat separately" option to OFF. Synchronise folder, accepting the removal of [so-many] current images, while noting that there may also be other different files present in the same folder, that you do NOT want to now see imported.

Hi,

Welcome to the Adobe Community! We do not have a dedicated option to stack the Jpegs with the Raw but you can try an alternate method mentioned here: https://www.lightroompresets.com/blogs/pretty-presets-blog/7528404-how-to-handle-raw-jpeg-in-lightroom-part-3

Let us know if this helps!

Regards,

Nikunj

Thank you! I have seen that page numerous times now, and while it says that I can achieve "OPTION #1. IMPORT ALL PHOTOS, BUT ONLY SEE RAW PHOTOS IN LIGHTROOM", even if I follow this procedure, Lightroom insists on showing both ARW and JPG of each image. I may be misreading, but I simply cannot get Lightroom to show me just one of each image, and treat the jpg as non-existing.

I suppose I might have to delete and re-create the catalogue, but then I have to figure out how to get Lightroom not to import the jpgs that belong to a raw. I find it hard to figure out how to do even that (automatically, as I have thousands of images on each of these memory cards).

Update: it seems this might be a problem if I import an entire card, where some images are shot in RAW+jpg and others are just jpg. Is this sufficient to throw Lightroom off?
