Small, fine lines on image previews in LR

I'm getting these small "dashes" on some images. At first I thought it was a hardware issue. I did some memory tests and they were all clear.

I checked the drives and system files and they are all good. I hadn't yet checked the SD card reader or its cable. I did a basic drive test on the SD card and it came back as healthy.

Everything is up to date, including all device drivers.

I changed performance parameters in LR (GPU editing on and off, GPU previews on and off, GPU completely off) but the problem persisted. 

If I use the heal brush, it removes the dashes. Based on that, I thought the lines were baked into the images. But when I export the image (at least from raw to jpg), the jpg is clear of the lines. Not only was the exported image clear of the lines, but the preview in LR no longer had lines after I exported it. Again, this is independent of whether or not I'm using the GPU for performance in LR or not. 

These lines are present on some images whether I've done any processing on them or not. The problem just started happening. For reference, the incidence is pretty low - out of the 1400 images loaded, only about 15 of them had the lines. 

Any suggestions? I included a screen grab of the line (with a red circle around it in case it's hard to see) for reference. I can't include the raw image file because these are school pictures of kids.

    I opened the sample file in my LR 12.5 / Apple M2 Max / Mac OS 13.5.1 and see one small horizontal line, in both Library (including 1:1 previews) and Develop:

     

    So it's definitely not an issue specific to your graphics processor or driver.

     

    Like you, I can remove the line using the healing too. But unlike you, I also see the line in a full-resolution exported JPEG.

     

    I tried to open the file in Rawdigger to see if the line was baked into the raw pixels or if this were a Camera Raw issue, and Rawdigger gave this error:

     

    So all the evidence is pointing at a hardware problem that is corrupting the file somewhere between the camera and your hard drive: the card, the card reader, the USB cable, main memory, the hard drive.  Diagnostics are very helpful but won't detect every problem. I suggest these steps:

     

    - Try importing that image from the SD card on another computer running LR, Bridge, or Photoshop, if you have access to one. If you see the issue, then it's the card (or, heaven forbid, the camera).

    - Try a new SD card.

    - Run a Window memory diagnostic on main memory.

    - Run a Windows diagnostic on the hard drive.

     

    Google for the latter two.

    It would help to upload a sample raw with the problem (if you can find one not subject to privacy constraints). Upload it to Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar and post the sharing link here. That would rule out any possibility the problem is in the image itself.

     

    Also, please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

    I observed some more odd behavior. I opened an image with the lines in Bridge. The lines appeared there as they had in LR - and then they moved within the image. I opened the same image in Photoshop. The lines were as they were in LR - and then they multiplied and moved. 

    Back in LR, I discarded the 1:1 previews and rebuilt them - there was no change. 

    I'm baffled by this. It seams like it could be corrupt previews, but I'm not sure how to check this (or fix it if it is the case).

    LR is showing the correct technical version number but the wrong product name (Windows 10 instead of 11). This is a small buglet that Adobe hasn't bothered to fix:

    Thanks for taking the time to look at the file and troubleshoot. 

    I should have mentioned that I had previously run Windows Memory Diagnostic and no errors were found. Even though it seems I've found the problem (see below), I'm going to let memtest86 run overnight (64gb of memory will take a long time), as long as I'm checking things out. 

    I bought a new card reader and swapped out the cards. I uploaded a shoot I finished yesterday and still saw some lines. To keep isolating, I changed USB connections from the front panel to the back and that seemed to solve the issue. If that remains the case it'll be a no (low, since I bought a card reader) cost fix. Strike that - I've been contemplating an update to the PC, NAS and (why not) a new camera. I'm a full time photographer so it's a write-off and if I can't deliver, I'm out of business (justifying here). Thanks again.
