P:(Masking) Reduce number of clicks, KBSCs to perform certain actions

I hope Adobe is reading this 🙂

Since the update the masking tool takes one action too many (it sounds minor, but it prolongs the editing process unnecessary in my opinion).

Normally pressing M (or K or shift+M) would show all mask pins already used when hovering the photo with the cursor, just the way it still works using the spot remeval tool (Q). But now pressing M, it opens a new mask, without showing the old pins. Another 'action' is needed to see what masks are already on the photo.

I hope this gets changed soon.

Or am I missing something?

In previous versions of LR before the major change in the masks you could add a quick radial mask for example at an exposure preset to 0.50 then just click anywhere within the image to create another radial mask with the same setting over and over again. Now you have to either click on New Mask or click a keyboard shortcut, Shift-M between each mask.

This might seem like a trivial thing but when you're adding lots of little highlight areas it slows you down.

If this is something that can't be changed to work like the previous versions of LR, is there any way to change the keyboard shorcut for re-selecting the radial mask other than having to use the shorcut, Shift-M?

This might seem petty, but try using Shift-M if you're right handed with one hand on the mouse/tablet.

Much easier to be able to change to a short cut on the left side of the keyboard if possible.

Regards,

T.

"is there any way to change the keyboard shorcut for re-selecting the radial mask other than having to use the shorcut, Shift-M?"

Unfortunately not. You can change most LR keyboard shortcuts by editing the TranslatedStrings file, but this doesn't work for many of the Develop shortcuts, which appear to be hardwired into LR's code!

There's a longstanding feature request to make it much easier to change all LR shortcuts:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-ideas/p-allow-for-keyboard-shortcut-customization/i...

Your example is a perfect use-case for this ability.

It's one of the most popular feature requests. Please add your constructive opinion to the feature request and be sure to click the Upvote button at the top-right and Follow at the bottom of the first post. Who knows, maybe Adobe will implement this before the next ice age.

How would Lr automatically know when I/we want to add to the existing/selected mask OR create a new one altogether ?!

LrC has never known whether you want to add a new mask or modify an existing one.

Previously you could deal with just (e.g.) brush type masks - seeing what was there and then either clicking on a prior pin to reactivate that or clicking elsewhere to start a new one. But in this instance you would see nothing of any other kinds of masks, also you would see nothing of brushed omissions / additions to those other kinds of mask. Nor of range-related selection, which would need to be drilled down to within the relevant local adjustment.

In new interface you can either:

  • get to the point of seeing all the existing masks of whatever type - by clicking the "Masks" button below histogram or by pressing Shift+W - and then either click on the one you want to modify - in the Masks panel or on the image - and go from there. Or click (Add) to place a new one of the chosen kind.
  • OR go directly to commencing a new mask of your chosen sort, where a keyboard shortcut can do so, e.g. M. Otherwise Cancel out of commencing this with Escape key, and you are back to the same point where you have the same choices.

In both cases your choices of action are much wider than under the previous arrangement, and so a change of interface was inevitable.

IMO the number of keystrokes / clicks needed, before and now, is more or less a 'wash' taken overall.
