Keeping location data after editing

New Here ,
Nov 28, 2024 Nov 28, 2024

I have a picture in Google Photos with location-data. However after editing the picture in Lightroom, and using share - upload To Google Photos, alle metadata is there except for the location. In the export settings I have checked the option to retain location data. It seems like a bug or am missing something?

Hi @Maxvector9, welcome to the Adobe Community!

Is the location data missing only in Google Photos, or do you notice the same issue in other apps like your phone's Gallery? Also, does this happen with just this picture, or have you seen it with other photos too?

Could you let me know your phone model and whether these pics were taken with your phone's camera or the Lightroom in-app camera? This info will really help me figure out what might be going on.
One workaround we can try is using the Export As option instead of Share, and check if the Location data is reflected correctly that way!

Thanks a bunch! -Alek

Hi,

The problem seems to only happen when the geodata was added to pictures taken with my camera before uploading to Google Photos. Pictures with location data from my phone do keep their location data after editing in Lightroom.
The workaround also doesn't work in this case.

Hopefully this helps figuring out the problem.

Kind regards,
Max

Hey @Maxvector9, no worries at all! In Lightroom Mobile, both "Export as..." and "Save copy to device" have their own separate export settings. So, if you want the GPS data to be included in either of those, you'll need to make sure the "Location Info" option is enabled in each one. Could you check if the location is turned on for both? You can find them here:

Let me know if this helps, thanks Max!

@Aleke Hi, both checkboxes are enabled. Also I only use the share function.
In summary, the problem seems to persist only with photographs which I added the geodata to after taking the picture (pictures taken with my camera). Photographs taken with my phone, while locationdata was on, also keep their locationdata after editing in Lightroom.

Hey @Maxvector9! Apologies for the late reply. Have you tried installing the latest release of Lightroom Mobile from December? Did it help with the issue?

If not, which app are you using to add the location to these photos before uploading them to Google Photos?

Thanks for your patience!

Alek

Hi no worries. The problem still persists I'm afraid. I added the geodata with a program called Geosetter.

Also I use OI.Share (the mobile app of Olympus). This collects the geodata and then puts in in the metadata of the images. In both cases the geodata is lost after editing in Lightroom Mobile.

Hey @Ben300635207n8t @Maxvector9!

It looks like Lightroom Mobile doesn’t currently support externally added geodata. I know it’s not ideal, but a workaround is to add the location data after you’ve made your edits and exported the photo.

Sorry for the troubles
Alek
