P: Add Color Labels

Contributor ,
Oct 26, 2017 Oct 26, 2017

I added thousands of photos (other than those in Synced Catalogs) and now I cannot differentiate them other than by the standard filters provided because I have used color labels to identify certain criteria. Color labels are just as important as Flags, Please add them!

yes we are at least on CC version. Classic you have but you can't eg flag in cc and then get this synced back into classic LR. Thats a big joke. What only works is text but takes more time in case you want to flag pictures for blog and use the stars in a different way.

Flags should sync between mobile and Classic. Color labels don't, hence this request.

Another vote for colour labels in Lightroom CC that sync back to Lightroom Classic and an easy on-screen interface mode to add/remove the colour labels. Similar to the stars but with boxes for the colours.

Curious why from a software development standpoint this wouldn't have been implemented by now (after years of people requesting it and a fairly obvious feature to have)? Is there some complexity with labels that doesn't exist with stars and picks? Is it a design philosophy of 'simplifying' the rating system?

There is one possibly complexity that springs to mind, and that's the color labels are purely text, so they can be represented by different colors. For example, your red label may mean "to do" on one computer but "to do" might be yellow on another computer. I'm sure it's not an insurmountable issue, but may be a factor in its prioritization.

I'd strongly suggest to add color labels and star ratings to Lightroom mobile.

For me this app is wonderful for sorting through pictures - but just using the reject/pick flag is not precise enough for my purposes.

I could imagine easy to use interfaces for this: e.g. scrolling in the left of the screen through color labels, in the center through reject/pick flag, on the right through the star ratings. Or add just one additional control to choose between the different rating/labeling systems.

Same here. Please add Color Label support in Lightroom CC. This request is asked for about 2 years ago. I ́m wondering, if it ́s really such a big job to implement it?

Functionality as in lightroom classic, ability to color label photos. This is part of my workflow in order to quickly know which photos still need to be edited.

same here. I want to merge Lightroom 5 to Classic CC and cannot afford to loose colour labels- has this been resolved?

Lightroom Classic has always had labels.  Lightroom Desktop does not as the Ecosystem clients do not have labels (Desktop, Mobile and Web). If you upgrade from your Lightroom 5 to Classic 9.2, the same labels are there.

Hi Rikk hope you get the point that an essential feature is missing in cc called color labels. Or is that so complicated to develop ? Joke. Adobe wake up and code that which takes a bunch of hours.

dear Rikk, thanks for your comment, but I am left confused by it. Lightroom Classic is desktop focussed, no?!  Could you please explain?

(copied from adobe: https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom-classic/lightroom-cc-vs-lightroom-classic.html
Lightroom is the new cloud-based photo service that works across desktop, mobile, and web. Lightroom Classic is the desktop-focused digital photography product. )

.. so Rikk,
1. what do you mean by 'Lightroom Desktop does not as the Ecosystem clients do not have labels'
2. does existing hard work/labelling/edits transfer across from Lightroom 5 to CLassic CC with the thousssssands of images/years of work i could not bear to lose?

thanks for your time 😉

1) Lightroom desktop, here, is the new “cloudy” version of Lightroom, not Classic. Both are desktop app, but Lightroom is a cloud based app, whereas Lightroom Classic is a desktop-centric app withe limited (crippled) cloud functions. There’s a pinned post about the naming.

2) Yes! You can upgrade your catalog from LR 5 to Classic as this is successor without any loss. But be extremely careful: whatever upgrade you’d choose (The new Classic, version 9.x or “cloudy”), you’ll rent the software and not own it. (Monthly pas instead of one time purchase).Lastly, Adobe won’t agree, but many people feel the development focus has shifted away from Classic. Just so you’d know.

Dear Antoine-
Thank you soooo much for your words and expertise, can't tell you how much i appreciate it.

I was thinking Classic CC might be good for me because instead of using cloud I have a series of NAS drives for storage- hmm interesting to know about the shift in development focus...

(Thanks again so much x)

You’re welcome 😉
I can’t help you with your decision, since both have advantages and disadvantages. I’m sure there are other threads treating of this. If you don’t need any sync and mobile functions and don’t like the subscription based model, there are now very good,  alternatives to LR with excellent migration tools. To bear in mind 😉

Ecosystem Clients do not use Color Labels. Ecosystem clients include Lightroom Desktop, Lightroom Mobile (iOS/Android) and Lightroom Web (Browser).  Not everything will transfer from Lightroom 5 to Lightroom Desktop.

Lightroom Classic uses color labels as does Adobe Bridge.

Lightroom Classic (Currently Version 9.2) is a direct upgrade for your Lightroom 5. Everything transfers from Lightroom 5 to Lightroom Classic - including Labels, Edit. No data/edits should be lost in a Classic upgrade from 5.

There is no shift in Development Focus. Lightroom Classic has a large team releasing features and upgrades regularly.  Both products are in active development.

Hopefully that answers you concerns.

Dear Rikk,
In your explanation you does not tell about using Lightroom Mobile / Lightroom Classic combination. This combination works mainly well, except some issues like absence of color labels.
In my case for example I have a terabytes of photos in LR Classic archive and use a synced collection to make a classification/basic correction of the new photos on the road. Absence of color labels does not allow me to use some classification I need and flags is not enough for it.
The similar situation I see from other users, so you could see the demand for color labels.

That's exactly the point. Why would I use LR Mobile in the first place, if not on the road? It's a good combination, LR Mobile on the road, LR Classic at home ... but only if the functionality is the same. Hence, we need color labels in LR Mobile. And to be honest, Adobe starts to piss me off by ignoring this request from so many users.

... as is the case for stacks, keywords, edit history, ...
Adobes merely takes inspiration from requests but doesn’t care for the biggest part. Many requests have remained unanswered for years. As long as smartphone users remains the main new audience, I don’t expect much change. Sadly

I'm also so disappointed that Adobe has ignored this for years. As soon as Capture1 releases something like a mobile companion app, it doesn't take a second and my Adobe subscription is canceled.

I’m sure you won’t be the only one. But I’m afraid they’re ok loosing a couple of “hardcore” photographers, as long as the mobile (read smartphone) business is good.

Just look at the ratings on the App Store: LR mobile is doing fine; when Ps was released and disappointed, they got the message and even released a roadmap. Something that has also been asked for ages but in vain. It says a lot about the company’s main preoccupations.

I need colour labels across all Lightrooms. I primarily use Lightroom Classic, and use Lightroom CC only to bridge to my iPad. But the majority of work and especially organization takes place in Classic. Flags and stars only go so far, colour labels help me quickly filter things like all the HDR merges, Panorama Stitches, or all images used to create these vs. the end result. All this is important for organizing 1000's of images in my catalog.

PLEASE ADD COLOUR LABELS ACROSS ALL LIGHTROOMS!
