P: 24.5 After rotating canvas, any PS window popup resets the rotation

Hello people

If I rotate the canvas then decide to use any tool that has a window popup (New layer, Adjustments...), the canvas will reset the view to 0. It kills my workflow. Anyone have a workaround? Restarting photoshop doesn't work. It didnt do this in the previous version.

Thanks

Since the recent update, when I create a new layer, my canvas resets it's rotation. I often have the canvas rotated whilst painting, and have always been able to add a new layer and carry on painting without issue.

But since the recent update, when I create a new layer, my canvas resets to it's default position. Has anyone else found this? Is there a new check box somewhere where I can turn this off? I haven't seen one...

Interested to know if this is just me, or something others are experiencing. Many thanks.

Can't find an edit button. I see that the rotation tool show the correct rotation angle that was set but the canvas is rotated to default. So it must be some kind of bug.

Same. Even when creating a new layer via drop down menu. Chatting with support yielded no results. I'm tired of uninstalling and reinstalling and manually inputting preferences over and over and over again. These constant bugs incredibly frustrating and time wasting. Stop kissing up to shareholders with trendy, useless "features" and PLEASE I am begging you PLEASE focus more on stability and security. We shouldn't have to troubleshoot so much.

I'm painting.  I rotate the image to get an optimal angle (A) on making a brush stroke. I open the color picker palette to tweak my color before applying the stroke.  The image rotates from (A) back to 0 degrees when the color picker palette opens.  Please revert the rotation feature to return back to 0 degrees only when I do so with the rotation tool, not when I open the color picker.

I recently updated photoshop 24.5.0 and I use the rotate view tool (R) extensively in my profession. After the update, now when I rotate the view and go to click another file or tab, the image will automatically reset back to the original opened view. I am using it for side by side comparisons and having to find the exact degree via the rotate rool to then enter that into the image rotate arbitrary angle. This has been a pain, especially when I'm doing it for multiple angles for hundreds of images a week, its a total time waster. The rotate view tool was a lifesaver to move the two images freely and easily and now I'm back to frustration and slow work production.

I use a 2022 laptop with multiple monitor screens, Windows 10 64-bit, graphics processor is compatible, a wireless keyboard and  mouse, plenty of operating space and never had an issue before this most recent update.

Hi @fotochopCait a couple things we can try:

Curious if you have tried changing the springboard keyboard shortcuts time? By default it is set to 200ms which is what it has been for years so if that doesn't work for your workflow, increase the timing or uncheck that option so that spring-loaded keyboard shortcuts are disabled if that fits your workflow.

Also:

Go to Preferences > Technology Previews... and enable “Older GPU mode (pre 2016)” - Restart Photoshop. Does the problem persist?

If none of these work,

Try resetting Prefs for the Beta:

/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Adobe\ Photoshop\ \(Beta\)\ Settings (Mac)
C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop (Beta)\Adobe Photoshop (Beta) Settings )Win)

Launch BETA Photoshop While Pressing The Keyboard Shortcut

With Photoshop closed, press and hold Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and then Launch Photoshop the way you normally would.

@stotkaFZD could you share your workflow/steps, or a video showing what you are seeing? Testing here and not able to reproduce this, happy to keep trying but not sure if we are doing the same things you are.

Sorry but I already reverted to a previous build since I couldn't work with the bug.

The steps are, using a wacom tablet and 2 monitors (1 utrawide and the native laptop screen), holding R key, rotate the canvas, use cmd/ctrl + shift + N to open a new layer (Just an example as it happens with any popup), as soon as the popup to rename the layer shows up, the canvas would return to 0 degrees. (What shows that its a bug is that the small square that shows the degrees of the angle in the rotate tool still shows the rotated value)

Hope this helps

Hi @CoryShubert

Thank you for trying to help me, unfortunately it is not the timing of the tool that is the issue, it's that the tool stops working after I move to another image. When I use the rotate view tool to adjust an image to the desired orientation, it will automatically reset to it's original orientation once I click on another image or tab I have open.

- The Older GPU otion did not help. This is a 2022 ThinkPad and has worked perfectly fine with the previous verisons of photoshop I've used until this newest update. I am not using Beta

(Adobe Photoshop Version: 24.5.0 20230512.r.500 3fc8e4c x64
Number of Launches: 95
Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
Version: 10 10.0.19042.2965)

-I reset the Prefs as you described and it did not change the issue

-Launching Photoshop with Shift+Ctrl+Alt lost the paths for my images and would not open anything, continually gave me errors that the images had been deleted or moved (they had not) and so I could not check if it fixed the rotate view tool as I could not open any images.

Any other advice?

Thanks,

Cait

@CoryShubert Could you be so kind to leave a message in this thread when this is fixed? I Just reverted to an older version cause it's impossible to maintain a proper workflow for anyone who got used to rotating their canvas freely under this update.

Thank you for aknowledging the problem.

On the Photoshop 24.5.0 release running on Windows 10 (10.0.19045, build 19045), opening the blending options window to change a layer style while an image is rotated will reset the rotation to 0 degrees. In past versions of Photoshop, this interaction has not happened, so I am assuming it is a bug. Here is a gif of this happening:

Photoshop_7aiMxNAtIR.gif

I frequently add strokes to things while zoomed in and rotated, so this bug is causing me a lot of grief as I have to re-rotate my image after I add a stroke. I hope this post is useful in this being addressed, and thanks for looking at it!

I just noticed there's another post about this and has been acknowledged as a bug (https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-bugs/p-24-5-after-rotating-canvas-any-ps-window-p...) that I didn't see until after I made this post, whoops. Feel free to delete or close this thread.
