P: 32bit document shows banding on Mac Mini when GPU enabled

I've just upgraded my 2018 Mac Mini to macOS monterey.

Now whenever i open a 32bit exr image it shows extreme banding. It happens on Photoshop 2021 and 2022.

If i disable the advanced graphics all banding goes away, however it is extremely buggy with the advanced graphics turned off. Layer masks often show incorrectly when at different zoom levels with big squires either showing as white or black. The transform handles don't show up unless i zoom out and in again, the heal tool workings just downt show at, doesn't go dark grey, if i zoom out and in again it suddenly fixes it.

Where is the bug? In Monterey GPU drivers or within photoshop?

Hello,

Please share your Photoshop System Info.  You can copy the text in the dialog under Help > System Info…

Paste it into this thread or attach as a text file. A screenshot of PS with a banded image (if possible) would also be helpful.

Thank you.

The banding isn't in the data itself but in the preview. That's why disabling GPU doesn't show it (and there would be no such banding in that data). You also may not have a full, high-bit display path but the bottom line is, with GPU off, it disappears.

When turning OFF GPU works, it's a GPU bug and you need to contact the manufacturer or find out if there's an updated driver for it. On the Mac, that's part of the OS update(s) so if this is the latest OS version, you may need to roll back a release.

Please try splitting your system info into two separate posts.  Perhaps it’s too much text for a single post. Thanks!

The problem is definately Photoshop. The 30bit display option is greyed out.

I have Photoshop 2022, 2021 and 2020 all installed on the same machine.

Both 2022 and 2021 have the same problem.

2020 is absolutely fine, no banding at all and it also doesn't have 30bit display greyed out.

Thank you for sharing your system info.  Have you tried deleting your preference?

  1. Quit Photoshop
  2. Navigate to Photoshop's Preferences folder. macOS: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings Windows: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
  3. Remove the file called MachinePrefs.psp from inside the settings folder and move it to your desktop
  4. Restart Photoshop

Upload the document you see banding to something like Dropbox so we can examine it.

There should be NO banding in the data. Again, the banding can be in the display path. Those of us with confirmed high-bit display paths can view your document. Or...

Download this, view it at 100%, do you see banding?

You should not see any banding on my document.

That your display is high bit isn't enough, the entire path has to be high bit. On my system, I see no banding on that test document, it is completely smooth.

It's going to be very difficult to define what in your video path is causing this banding but it isn't in the data. I could be your video card, driver or anything within that entire path. With a high bit display alone, banding is reduced but not elimiated entierly.

Confused by 'either'. No banding in Preview but banding (or not) in Photoshop?

Again, what would really be helpful is an upload of the document you are viewing that shows this banding.

Well, more and more functionality in newer versions moves to GPU so that might explain the issue, especially IF you don't see banding with GPU off (do you?).

I see no banding on the image you just provided at 100% zoom but it's rather small. I'm also at a loss as to what's up with the embedded profile (Adobe RGB 1998 linear rgb profile) but if I assign Adobe RGB (1998) I still see no banding.

Even at 200% zoom, no banding.

I see no banding in Photoshop 2020 which suggests it can't be a driver issue unless its the switch from OpenCL to Metal.

With no banding in Photoshop 2020 but banding being present in 2021 and 2022 it must be how Photoshop is interpreting the file which surely suggests a Photoshop bug rather than a display driver bug.
