P: Brush Outline/Circle disappearing when working with masks

There is already a discussion in the community "Brush Outline/Circle disappearing intermittently (NOT CAPS LOCK) ". But since I have figured out in detail how to reproduce the behavior and when it becomes present, I want to report the issue officialy that Adobe hopefully will fix this in one of the next upcoming patch releases.

OS Environment:

Win 10 Pro 64bit 21H1
Adobe Ps 23.0.2

The issue is only present in combination when using Masks on a layer!

Create a new document (white, black or transparent layer)
Add a Mask to the layer
Select the layer OR the mask (independent on what you want to paint)
Select the brush tool
Try to start moving the mouse quickliy and pressing the left mouse button nearly at the same time and keep the mouse button pressed
Try to repeat until the you get locked in the issue and the brush circle disappears and the mouse arrow becomes visible

When working with a mouse as input device, the chance to facing this issue is probably rare because this kind of operation, moving the mouse and clicking the button nearly at the same time is kindly unnatural.

But it looks different when using a pen tablet as input device, because now it becomes a more natural operation when hover the pen toward the tablet surface and then drop down onto the surface to start painting.

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

That was one of the first things i tried and seemed to have had no effect. It appears that after reinstalling my drivers and rebooting my pc, photoshop runs slightly better, but still nowhere near what it used to, and still makes other apps flicker (no changes to lightroom performance).

I have no idea if it's related but no shortcuts work either (undo, tools etc.) no matter how long i wait for it to load.

Actually with the latest "February 2022 (version 23.2) release" this issue is still not fixed.

Is there somebody of adobe who can confirm that the issue might already adressed to the devolopment engineers to take care about it?

It would be nice if we will get an update about the status. Please let us if the issue is planned for one of the next upcoming releases.

I would do 3 things:

1. Update Photoshop to 23.2

2. Update to the latest NVIDIA driver using the Clean Install option

3. Make sure preferences are all back to default in case there is a stale setting somewhere.

Does it work correctly?
If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.
If it does solve the problem, I would like to get the folder of settings to try and figure out what is bad with them.

None of those fixed the issue. Things have gotten more interesting. The first time i opened photoshop after doing a clean nvidia driver update it worked much better - shortcuts worked and minimal lag overall. Then i tried pressing rightclick which caused the freeze again and shortly after it crashed - which didn't happen before (ANd shortcuts stopped working again after the crash). In trying to record a video of it happening i noticed that when i open photoshop and have my cursor anywhere where it takes the standart triangle form (like the left, under the shortcuts) it is greyed out on my screen, when i saw the video it looked normal. Also when it freezes my cursor shape doesn't change no matter where in the application i place it.

It looks like the same general cursor behavior, but also the other way with having brush (or whatever) cursor on places where it normally would change.

Everytime i open photoshop, after about 1 minute everything becomes unfunctional. It's not crashing or freezing, but it turns into a mouse cursor and i cannot draw or do anything with my canvas!! Whether i have 1 or 2 canvas its the same btw.

It's been happening even with the 2021 cc version, now in 2022 cc version its still there!

It's impossible to use please help! Paid plan btw NOT a crack version.

Thinking it was my hardware issue, I spent over 3K getting the best CPU, GPU and ram for photoshop BUT ITS STILL THERE!

My available ram is 25116MB stated in photoshop memory usage, which is way more than enough.

Bonjour,

Depuis quelques temps je rencontre un problème sur Photoshop (version 23.3.1 sur Windows 10).
Lorsque j'utilise un outil (peut importe lequel mais j'ai l'impression que ça le fait plus souvent avec la plume). D'un coup le curseur se transforme en flèche blanche, comme un curseur basique de souris et je ne peux plus rien faire.
J'essaye tous les outils mais le courseur reste le même. Je suis obligée de fermer le fichier et de le ré-ouvrir.
C'est très pénible car ça le fait très souvent.
Quelqu'un sait d'où cela pourrait venir ?

Nevertheless, I´m paying money for the product and I have just requested for support that a issue shall fixed that I have already adressed a half year ago!

For me it is not important what kind of company Adobe is. I want to have a clear statement if the issue is confirmed and already addressed to the the development team.

Yep.

Same problem persists. I wonder if its clear to Adobe that the brush is NOT DISAPPEARING? So normally, the outline of the brush cursor is either brighter or darker depending on where the brush is on an image (whats behind it, dark or light). But, for a while now, when your brush cursor is near neutral grey, it BECOMES neutral grey too (or close). It is visible, but JUST BARELY. And it feels like it vanishes when you are working, because it effectively does.

Even the most crude of solutions, like a blocky, pixelated outline on the cursor when it's hovering over neutral grey (or close to it) would be usable.

Fortunately I got support from Adobe customer care and we found a solution. On my environment I have solved the issue.

I was asked to follow and try all the steps to get rid of this issue of this article:

In my case the last option I tried was to reset the preferences, and this solved the issue!

Take care and backup your preferences before resetting it.

Since resetting preferences the issue didn´t came up again.

Hi, I noticed lately on Photoshop 24.1 that my brush cursor is flickering as if there were some lag/buffer when I'm drawing. Usually when i draw small lines rapidly (like hatchings, to give you the idea). The usual cursor of the brush shape disappears during one 10th of second or 1 second and turns to the normal white arrow mouse cursor. I signal this bug because it doesn't seem to happen on Photoshop 23.5.3 that i have also installed on my computer.

Both versions are up to date and I checked the same performance settings on both.

I'm on Windows 11 and my graphic card is an NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3070.

Can you please post the contents of Photoshop's Help>System Info... menu, so that we get to know your OS, its version, the exact version of Photoshop you are running, the date of the GPU driver, etc.
