P: Cursor stuttering & screen flickering in Photoshop on high refresh rate G-sync monitors

If you're a nvidia gsync user and experiencing mouse stuttering in Ps (and all Adobe apps), try turning off gsync to see if that resolves the issue. 
Basically what happens is that any activity in an Adobe app will result in 2-3 seconds of micro-cursor stuttering (looks like frame rate dropping) and the occasional 3-4 seconds of cursor freeze. Disabling gsync fixes the issue. This behavior appears only in Adobe apps and none other.

The your PS stay fixed? I came across this post because I was having the same problem. I'd start PS and it would be unresponsive for about 20 seconds right off the bat or become unresponsive when trying to use a tool, like the move tool or brush. I think the problem was that I had G-Sync set to both Full Screen and Windowed modes. I turned that to only Full Screen in the NVidia Control Palel and it's working fine now.

You can turn off G-Sync for Photoshop specifically by going into NVidia Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings, click on the Program Settings tab, pick Photoshop from the dropdown menu, scroll down to Monitor technology, set it to Fixed Refresh, and click apply.

Thank you for the suggestion. Photoshop has mostly behaved since I made the change, but maybe once in every few days I get a moment where it freezes or lags so I will try your fix as well.

Really wish Adobe would fix this Gsync issue! Older version of Photoshop there's no problems..but when update to the newer version I get this stupid frame rate stutter! Now I've no choice but to turn off Gsync...I can't turn it off in the 3d settings for Photoshop because I get this black screen when I make any changes ADOBE DO SOMETHING!! Same goes for all Adobe programs

If I activate Gsync in full screen mode only and I deactivate gsync on the photoshop.exe profile I get 2s black screens as soon as I click on a tool.

3Dartal, I've never made a community post or response but I had to say thank you so much for this. I was about to pull my hair out at the flickering and lag, and I KNEW there had to be a location in the Control Panel to manually set it, but couldn't find it. Thank you thank you!

I mentioned this before, and I'm always glad to jump on an Adobe "fix your buggy programs" hate-train, but this stuttering issue is not an Adobe problem.

Whatever display libraries or DLLs that Adobe products are using, and how those libraries interface with Gysnc in Windowed Mode are the source of the problem.

Those same library are being used by plenty of other programs not related to Adobe and they all exhibit the same problems. Go ahead and download/install Corsair iQue (even if you don't have a Corsair product) and you'll see it does the same thing. There are several games that have the same problem, FireAlpaca does it as well, I believe Handshake also does it.

The solution is to go into nVidia Control Panel and disable Gysnc for Windowed Mode. That's all you have to do. You don't have to make Gsync exceptions for every Adobe app in the control panel- just turn it off globally.

You are not missing out on anything by keeping it enabled. Despite it's important sounding name, you are not gaining any advantage to having this turned on. If you fresh install nVidia drivers, you'll find it isn't even turned on by default any more. Gsync for Windowed Mode has nothing to do with Gsync for when you're playing games or doing something in full screen. Just leave the Full Screen option turned on.

Many games and applications, especially for Game Pass titles, do not support fullscreen.  Windowed mode only isn't an option for me.

You're welcome to do your own independent research, but Gsync in windowed mode is kind of a hackjob implementation compared to how it works in exclusive fullscreen. It has to work within the desktop window management layer of Windows which has compatibility issues depending on the game engine. 

DX12/Vulkan and (most) UWP games work properly at a high refresh rate in any screen mode regardless of this setting, but at some point Microsoft made changes that broke nvidia's ability to override DWM in windowed/borderless DX9/10/11/OGL. Your desktop window management layer is running in Vsync anyway, so for those games you're getting neglible benefits from having this Gsync for Windowed mode setting enabled anyway.

In the end you'll have to choose between your productivity software and what is probably a small subset of your games. I have tons of DX9/10/11/OGL titles that I run in Windowed mode and they all run fine at 144hz without any issues, and I have this Gsync setting disabled, so you may be pleasantly surprised to find out there's no actual difference in your windowed games when playing them with this setting disabled.  

While this has been a problem with the Adobe CC software for years, I doubt Adobe will do anything about it, because it's not really a problem for them to fix. There are plenty of posts about this on Reddit and the blurbusters forums if you want to do some more investigation.

Hi,

I am on pc with Win10

In new ver 23.0 i found weird bug with mouse... mouse is in laggy motion about a second, when i hover from canvas to window (layers, toolbox, etc..).

That problem caused by ruler....when i turn off ruler problem is solved, but this solution is not good.

Problem is still here at 23.0.1

Do you have any solution for this?

I dont know about photoshop needs restart after change preferences... I try again uncheck native ruler... and it works...

i try check deactive native canvas and helps with another weird lags.

I use g-sync...

Turned off works good too.

But for me is better use changes in preferences...  it will be annoying if i must turn off and turn on gsync when i want use photoshop...

G-sync creates the same lag-stutterinng issue in Lightroom ( installed latest update) especially when you zoon in/out. Looks like Adobe apps are synchornizing with Monitor refresh rate when you use g-sync.

The only fix that works for now is to disable G-sync

Photoshop is the only unusable application I have when using gsync for everything. Other applications that may have some flickering issues are fixed by setting it to fixed refresh rate in the nvidia options. Photoshop, however, decides to completely turn off the display everytime you start or stop moving your mouse (instead of flickering non-stop when on gsync)

The windowed gsync might not be the best implementation, but I don't have the same issues in for example Fusion360 or games in general in windowed mode. This is, in the end, something they have to support, not ask customers to disable a functionality that has overall almost no issues.

You can 'invite' others to do research and whatnot, but turning gsync off is still not a solution, no matter how much you think it works 'just fine' without it for windowed games you aren't using gsync on those games and it defeats the purpose of having a monitor with 144hz+ and gsync capable.

Again, the adobe suite is the only one I have found to, no matter what, break. Luckily I don't suffer from epilepsy otherwise my post would've been quite different.

A few weeks ago I bought a new screen with HDR.

Now I'm using my Photoshop 23.1 on Core i9 9900K, GTX 1080Ti, Win11 Pro and all the menus and dialog windows are flickering.

Also most time if I want to edit something (like transformation tool), photoshop is not refreshing and doesn't display the tool until I minimize the window an open it again.

I already checked if the graphics driver is up to date.

Does Photoshop work with the HDR option set to on (/auto) in Windows?

What else can I do to use HDR?

Make sure you go to PS prefs and turn on HDR display suppor under Technology Previewst.
