P: (macOS Sonoma) Photoshop 2023/2024 Save for Web shows incomplete preview

Have just updated to Photoshop 2024 and my save to web panel is now not displaying correctly - see screengrab.  How can I adjust it to have the full image fill the four windows?  cheers, Bob

After recently updating my Photoshop and MacOS to the latest versions, when I go to save a gif/check the in-app preview it doesn't show the gif, only a dark grey box. Viewing the preview in a browser works fine and I can save the gif and it'll appear fine but the in-app preview is broken. I've downgraded my Photoshop to an older version, restarted my computer, reset my Photoshop prefs, and used Disk Utility to check for errors—nothing has worked. I've been making gifs fine for months, and then this started happening in the last day or so. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated!

I see the mods merged my bug report with this one, makes sense. I wasn't able to find this one, or any other similar reports, until after I finally decided to post one myself. Go figure! lol

That being said—I decided to lose my entire Sunday (really my entire weekend because I spent Saturday just trying to figure out what was even happening and trying many other things to see if I could fix the issue) as it seems it comes down to how Photoshop is handling the new 14 Sonoma OS. So, I downgraded my OS back to 13 Ventura OS and now I'm able to preview gifs in-app again. (YIPPEEE!!)

I think you can downgrade back to Ventura by simply using TimeMachine to go to a backup from before the update to Sonoma—I didn't have one so this wasn't even an option for me so definitely look into that first. If it's doable and you have a TM backup from before the OS update, it'll be much easier than what I had to go through lol.

Here's what I did since I had no recent pre-Sonoma backup in TimeMachine:

1. I made a new full backup of my computer with TimeMachine.
   
   
   
2. I then downloaded 13 Ventura OS from the App Store. (You might get a weird message after it finishes like "you can't run this blah blah blah"—it's fine.
   
   
3. I then took a USB flash drive that had at least 15GB of free space and set it up to be a bootable installer. You'll first need to erase/format the flash drive before loading it with Ventura. Go to your disk utility, click the name of the flash drive, and then select 'erase'. You'll be prompted to rename it and give it a format. Use an easy but recognizable name. I had some issues with a name that has a space so maybe just avoid that altogether. Make sure you set the format as 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' and then proceed with erasing it.
   
   
4. Once you get a green check that the erase/formatting was a success you can move on to loading it with Ventura. I followed the steps in this Apple Support article: (Create a bootable installer for macOS)
   
   
5. I then had to go into recovery mode and fully erase my computer's disk (this is why you need to make sure you make a full backup!! I know it takes forever but you need to.) I first tried to just install Ventura without doing this as I read somewhere that the process would automatically wipe the disk anyway—Not the case for me! So you'll most likely need to first erase your Macintosh HD disk first when you're in recovery mode.
   
   
6. I then installed Ventura from my bootable installer USB. I followed these steps: (How to use the bootable installer)
   
   
7. After that's done and Ventura has installed you'll eventually be given the option to migrate/transfer info from a backup. Before it fully begins it lets you pick and choose what info you want migrated. I chose to do everything except System & Preferences I think it was? I was afraid it would restore Sonoma lol. So I just did all the other options and left the option with the gear icon unchecked. (Maybe pointless but at that point I didn't want to risk having to start over.)
   
   

And then you wait! This whole process took... several hours 😅 but now everything is back and I'm running Ventura again. I checked and Photoshop is now able to show in-app gif previews again through the Save for Web (Legacy) window. 🥳

Though it would have been nice if Adobe had addressed this bug so I didn't have to go through all that in the first place. I hope this helps someone lol. If you're stuck, I know steps can sometimes be different depending on the device, just google google google. I used like 4 different articles to get the above steps so if something I described is different than what you see, google it! Check reddit, forums, etc.

If you're looking for a workaround since we don't know when Adobe will fix this issue, the only things I know that work is downgrading your MacOS back to 13 Ventura or using a second monitor.

The issue is related to the 14 Sonoma OS update. I went back to 13 Ventura and the issue with Save for web (legacy) gif preview was gone and it all worked fine again. If you want to try downgrading back to 13 Ventura please see the information I put in my previous comment in this thread here.

The 3 options are:
1. Use Photoshop on a second monitor. For some reason, the gifs can be previewed fine on an external monitor.
2. Downgrade back to 13 Ventura with a TimeMachine backup.
3. If you have no backup, create a bootable installer. I included the steps on how to do this in my previous comment here.

My suggestion is to wait another week or so without doing anything. It will definitely improve.

I can confirm that when you move the blank "Export For Web" window to a second (or third in my case) the image shows up perfect, just not on the maion monitor.

Lucky chap. That was the first thing I tried, didn’t work. May be do to the monitors I use: LG Ultrafine and ther MacBook Pro internal. 😕

Now with this pattern that the issue exists after Sonoma Upgrade could be that Adobe investigates this with Apple engeneers too to figure our who should do what in order to make this fixed for good and be compilant with the most recent gpu system architecture specs so probably that's why it takes so long fo Adobe to fix this - could be that they are waiting for some Sonoma fix as well. Just speculating.

Did a video to show an interesting bug about this... Photoshop 2024 Save for Web Preview Bug 

I think it's an Adobe Bug.
I did a test my minimizing the Photoshop Application, then did the Save-for-web shortcut while the Photoshop was still active (but minimized). Then closed the save-for-web window (clicked cancel). Then maximized the photoshop window and to my surprise, the layer blending was changed to Hard Mix.

It only happened when save for web was opened and closed during minimized window.

I'm using a larger monitor without that resolution. It's scaled from default to 2304 x 1296. No love. 

As a reminder to people just joining, the other possible solutions are:

1) Reverting to Ventura, which is way too much work for many

2) Waiting for Sonoma .1 which is due next week, and hoping

3) Moving the Save As for Web dialogue box to a second screen - seems to work for everyone (I don't think anyone has tried this using an iPad for the second screen, but that would be an easy option - as would be using a spare TV as a second screen)

4) Using the newer Export dialogue (losing some of the Save As for Web options)

5) Probably easier than reverting to Ventura: finding your old copy of Photoshop CSx and installing it in a virtual machine running an old copy of the OS (Mojave or earlier)

I'm pretty much using 3 and 4 while doing 2.
