P: Make the brush cursor easier to see (too thin, not enough contrast with some colors)

Explorer ,
Dec 02, 2019 Dec 02, 2019

In last updates I'm having problem seeing brush (paint and healing) cursor when working with colors similar to cursor grey (grey or brown midtones for expamle).

Sometimes cursor changes to white, but for very short time and very randomly.

So it's really hard to see where I'm just gonna paint or heal. It is really annoying and tiring.

If you want to try the new Brush Cursor options in the  Photoshop (Beta)

Screen Shot 2022-11-08 at 11.57.20 AM.png

How to use:

  1. Create a text file
  2. Save the file as a plain text file named PSUserConfig.txt
  3. In the Text file add this…

    BrushTipOutlineStrokeWidth 3

(0-3) This Increases the brush cursor outline.
0 is the default in the shipping version of Photoshop.
This Beta is using 1 as a default.

  4. Save the file/Place the file in the Photoshop settings folder:

For Windows: \Users\[Use

We are aware of cases that a brush icon can be difficult to see.

Making it stand out more strongly would be very useful and we are evaluating solutions for all the platforms we support.

I THINK IT'S REMARKABLE THAT PHOTOSHOP CAN CREATE SUCH WONDERS AS CONTENT AWARE AND NEURAL FILTERS, YET THEY CAN'T SEEM TO COME UP WITH A WAY TO CHANGE THE COLOR AND/OR OPACITY OF THE BRUSH TOOL. DO THEY READ ALL OUR PLEAS IN THIS FORUM? HEY, YOU GUYS.  ARE YOU OUT THERE?  ARE YOU LISTENING? HOW HARD CAN THIS BE?

I have constantly to click command on the mac to see where the cursor is, it's been this way for a few years now.  Adobe has no idea how to fix it as far as I can tell.  They had me send video screen shots showing the disappearing cursor but never responded thereafter.

I don't think they see the posts here, but they do see if you tweet, post on Facebook or Instagram and tag them. I think everyone here in this post should tweet or post on social media complaining about this so that Adobe moves its butt and fixes this once and for all.

@andre_schneider_7299466

obviously they do, Rick and Jeffrey are all over this forum.... just they choose to ignore since IMO they have no plans to fix.

Tweet facebook instagram youtube may help but Adobe is diehard they will ignore you forever and have no regrets.

In the past, I used to put hashtags on Instagram with my acquaintances, but I didn't get nothing.
And what I know for sure is...

Adobe doesn't think it's a big problem that the edges of this brush change.
Most end users write without complaints, and most non-professional retouchers I know don't know about bugs like this.

At first, it only occurred in Photoshop 2021, and then only until 2020.(for me, just my case)

And there was no big problem because I use the 2019 version as the main product when I work. It was okay.(PS 20.0.9)

But one day, like an epidemic, all of my Photoshop versions were contaminated, and now they're not coming back.
I've reinstalled Windows, reinstalled Photoshop, reinstalled GPU driver, replaced GPU, and purchased a new computer.

But I realized it wasn't a matter of my equipment.

I tested it in all Photoshop versions from 2017 to 2021, and the same phenomenon occurred.
I didn't test the 2014 version yet.
I think we should go back to cs3~cs5 which was really light and no problem.

Great! Finally, someone from Adobe said something about this long-overdue photoshop brush problem.

Now let's just wait another 2 more years 🤭

I just created a Photoshop Family account purely to add my voice to the others: Please fix this! The ability to change cursor color would help so much.

Daniel _Presdo; It has been over 4 months since this problem was achknowleged, this is using the date of your answer, and it looks like the 1st post was in 2017. It is nic you add these new feature and it would be nice to use them if I could see the cursor.  Get the damn problem fixed!!!

Hello, there was no change in that matter in the latest releases.

You might have noticed different preferences settings: legacy compositing, native canvas...

The Photoshop team is renewing the entire image to screen pipeline, and switching from soon to be retired technologies, such as OpenGL towards DirectX on Pc and Metal on Apple.

I think we must wait for the dust to settle down in order to tweak the cursors, maybe will the new technologies allow new blending modes/viewing settings for the cursor?

Agree. Photoshop ios a disaster at high res: I use an 8k screen and the cursors are next to invisible, the menus unreliable. To simple find the cursoe centre, I use a tiny plug in from catnip5.com, called "mouse highlighter". This puts a dot at teh cursor's origin of whatever size and colour that you like. I use 30 px and magenta. Best not to use the highlight option, as this leaves artifatcs in p/shop without offering any advantage. Thiu sis not damned help with the fundamentla problem, which is that brush outlines are completely invisible. Adobe: this has been a problem for at least a decade: DO SOMETHING.

I have the same issue on the mac and have always had the issues on previous versions of PS and MacOS. I do a lot of very high resolution scanning and retouching of black and white film. The cursor is near impossible to see. I navigate by using the location lines in the ruler. A huge time sink.

I think that the Mac technique to wiggle the mouse to make a larger pointer does not work with Photoshop's custom cursors, but there is also the solution to tap the Spacebar briefly to get the hand cursor, as an interim workaround...

Can someone please let me know when this issue is going to be resolved.  I am working on a Macbook Pro and it is really hard to see the brush / cursor and very straining on the eyes.  We pay monthly for Photoshop CC and install all the updates.  It is frustrating because I am wasting more time trying to find the cursor than I am actually creating anything.  Time is money and I am wasting my time and not making any money.  I have seen this issue has been diiscussed over and over again for quite some time if not years,  Adobe is aware of the issue, however there has not been a fix for it as of yet, why?  When can we expect to see a fix for this issue?

The Photoshop Preferences can be found in the Photoshop menu on a Mac and the Edit menu on Windows. Within the Cursors section are a range of Painting Cursors options. Anything in there help?

In case you didn't already know, pressing the Caps Lock key while using the Brush displays a crosshair instead of the circle.

I'm using Adobe Photoshop version "22.5.0 20210809.r.384 ce617de arm64" on an iMac with an M1 processor. I'm finding it very hard to see the outline of my brushes on a light-colored background. Is there a way to improve its visibility by changing its contrast? Thank you in advance for your help.

YES! I'm having this problem too. The cursor outline is so thin it's impossible to see against anything vaguely midtone. Cursor settings don't change it. Resetting doesn't change it. This makes it IMPOSSIBLE to spot heal on skin tones. If you make the brush hardness really, really low, you get a slightly more feathered outline which makes it *a little* easier to see but it's just not a practical way to use a tool. Just upgraded to an M1 macbook running current Photoshop CC. Has this really not been addressed yet??

Just upgraded to an M1 macbook and having the same problem running current Photoshop CC. The brush outline is too thin to see against anything remotely midtone. Makes spot healing on skin tones impossible. (Resetting tool and cursor settings does not change it.) I see this has been an issue for quite a while... Still no solution??
