P: Make the brush cursor easier to see (too thin, not enough contrast with some colors)

In last updates I'm having problem seeing brush (paint and healing) cursor when working with colors similar to cursor grey (grey or brown midtones for expamle).

Sometimes cursor changes to white, but for very short time and very randomly.

So it's really hard to see where I'm just gonna paint or heal. It is really annoying and tiring.

If you want to try the new Brush Cursor options in the  Photoshop (Beta)

Screen Shot 2022-11-08 at 11.57.20 AM.png

How to use:

  1. Create a text file
  2. Save the file as a plain text file named PSUserConfig.txt
  3. In the Text file add this…

    BrushTipOutlineStrokeWidth 3

(0-3) This Increases the brush cursor outline.
0 is the default in the shipping version of Photoshop.
This Beta is using 1 as a default.

  4. Save the file/Place the file in the Photoshop settings folder:

For Windows: \Users\[Use

We are aware of cases that a brush icon can be difficult to see.

Making it stand out more strongly would be very useful and we are evaluating solutions for all the platforms we support.

I have spent the last month trying to sort this out and after many hors I have found a work round.
I have changed my screen resolution from 3840 x 2169 to 1920 x 1080 and I can now see the ring fairly well.
Does mean wasting the HD capabilities of the computer but I can now use Photoshop.
Feel a bit let down by the Tech department of Adobe who told me that the ring "never shows up on a light background"

After writing the above, I now realise that there is more to it.
If you set your Screen resolution to 1920 x 1080, you must set your Scaling and layout no higher than 125% otherwise Camera Raw just won't work properly. It is incorrectly scaled, and you can’t see some of the buttons, which is a problem if you want to do ANYTHING!!!
So, one step forward and one step back!
Same Adobe are just ignoring this.

Hi,

it would be create if there finally would be a chance to set the cursor to a different color or thickness to make it easier to see on  high resultion screens. It often happens that you "loose" the cursor out of sight while moving, espacially when moving over an area of similar tones, e.g. skin retouching.

I a not saying it hapens to everyone, but should be an easy one to do and would help a lot.

Can you sport the cursor 😉

I'm using the latest PS version and it's virtually impossible to see the circle/area I want to edit using the clone stamp tool and it behaves erratically in terms of the outline turning white. Virtually impossible to use.

It is very frustrating indeed! I find myself using photoshop less and less these days and just use Capture One for as many things as possible. Photoshop just does not perform like it used to and bogs up my computer all the time. Kinda hate it these days.

Point well made, thanks. I have had this problem for over a year now and
Adobe are not doing anything. They seem to go for weird and wonderful
gimmick but basic problem, they can't be bothered.

This email is to Daniel - thanks for your response - I hope this is a high priority item as it's very, very difficult to do editing if you can't see where the tool is.....

I work mostly in BW photography of people. on an imac 5k display this is a nearly constant anoyance. I lose my cursor and find myself with eyestrain trying to track it. it would be great to have a user switchable option, make it neon green, red, black or white and/or just thicken the line. currently working with a 45px healing brush and CONSTANTLY lose the thing dramatically slowing down my work. I press the ctrl/cmd key and that changes it to the move icon, so I can find it quickly.

I was going to give your post a Like Chuck, but I see we now have to Upvote posts we like.

Are you a Windows user Chuck?  I have a feeling that you are.  I ask because I'm wondering if the same cursor finding tricks work on Mac systems.  I am constantly loosing my cursor.  I have a 32" main screen and a pair of 24" screens in portrait mode, one either side, and even using the Ctrl key trick I can find it hard to locate.

Trevor, the Mac trick is to shake the mouse pointer.

Yes, I am a Windows user. So that doesn't work on a Mac. I just assumed it would.

Chuck, to clarify: Pressing and holding the Command on the Mac will toggle to the Move tool — or to the Path Selection / Direct Selection tool when working with paths. The pulsating circle is Windows OS.

After seeing sooooo many complaints and Adobe not doing anything about it, it's obvious we are just talking to a brick wall. How hard can it possibly be to give the user the choice of a thicker brush. It that's not possible, at least give us a choice of switching between a black or white cursor. Way to go Adobe, so much for listening to your users. Beginning to think I may switch over to Affinity,

God only knows how many times I have talked with Adobe about this. Every
time I have to go through it from the start. The line of the tool ring
circle is to thin to see on high DF screens. It is set in plixcel and
because the df screen has very small pixcels it can not be seen esp against
certain colour backgrounds

Same here, Adobe are obviously more interested in adding more useless neural filters than addressing a fundamental flaw that is bugging the hell of of professionals.

Same here. Please, Adobe guys....please fix this. On skintone it's the worst. So retouching a face is a major part of using Photoshop.

Fast forward to Photohop 2022, nothing has been done to address the issue. I am having a hard time locating the cursor. It's been like that for more than a year. I guess Adobe doesn't care.

That legacy compositing has been removed in newer Photoshop. Photoshop has become useless to me. Reverting back to an older version since Adobe doesn't give a [removed by moderator] to make the cursor visible in mid tone range. I cannot to my job with a faulty program like Photoshop 2022.

I've been in touch a few times with the Adobe representative and sent him some video of the problem. He assures me they are looking into this. I appreciate his responsiveness.
