P: No image preview on Open dialog box on Windows

The preview window in the "Open" dialog box on Windows is gone in Photoshop. So if I click on a PSD file (once) to preview it, there isn't one. I have to completely open the file or go digging for it in Bridge. This is a very fundamental feature that needs to return, especially for those of us that have hundreds of files to dig through. PLEASE fix this.

I totally agree, James. I still can't figure out why they couldn't have offered some similar plugin or something.

The more I think about this issue I think there is more to it.
Adobe knew Microsoft was going to rental software verses boxware with permanent licenses and decided to take the same route.
I doubt that the issue is strictly related to security issues blamed on Microsoft as some third party software will let you preview images.
Management at both Adobe and Microsoft are not as interested satisfying their customer base as they are in the financial bottom line. Rental software gives both companies a continual cash flow.
Fortunately, I kept CS5 loaded and also run the update on CS6, so I preview via CS5.
I have signed up for and am using CC (Creative Cloud) and I personally am overly impressed, and rarely use it. Unless CC makes some spectacular updates/changes, doubt I will renew it after the one year contract, and stick with CS5 and CS6 standard.

Lets face it, Adobe does not care, nor does Microsoft.

Thanks to all who discussed this important topic. I'm just about to go from PS CS2 (PS version 9.02) to PS CS6 and thought that surely the problem of "no psd viewing" would have been fixed. What a disappointment. Guess it'll be Mystic Thumbs for me. Also, I don't believe for a moment that Adobe could not fix this problem if they wanted to do it. (Yes, it's a double negative, but it will have to do.) It may be more difficult than I think, with my limited knowledge, but it's essential for the photographic and graphics communities which are Adobe's best customers. It's a good guess that the company is now so well off that they no longer care about what their customers want.

Please read the existing posts and responses. We care about what customers want, but are limited by what we can do in the OS, or will be able to do in the OS.

Thanks Chris Cox for you're continued patience with the basic total outrage felt by many users.
At this point I feel like this is more a political problem between 2 companies and I feel like Adobe should just bring the PSD thumbs back and stand it's ground against OS vendors. Why?
Because the Microsoft doesn't actually know what it's doing at the moment, is scrambling backwards to create something that is less like Windows 8 and I'd be really surprised if they actually follow their initial plans and probably will leave Adobe to look foolish following commandments from a distant future that is never realized.
Im basing this on rumor, speculation and a few people I know who work in Windows 9 Dev team, so the need to do away with Thumbnails may in the future be realized - but again, why gimp the program proactively?

I agree with the above statements. If a third party can provide a preview so easily, then why not Adobe. Doesn't make sense. Guess we will have to put our money elsewhere with add-ons. I have CS6 but went back to CS5. Does the job for me. Don't need to upgrade.

this has also been driving me crazy, I ended up here after searching "what happened to image preview photoshop cc". seems the only option we are left with is to open and close every single file we that we want to know what they look like which is a tremendous waste of time, and RAM!

Same boat. Would gladly do without other features to have the preview working again. Massive time suck, super frustrating. Starting to regret my switch to CC now.

Late to the party, however...

It is absurd that in 2014 Adobe has somehow LOST its ability to provide thumbnails to an application that at its very core is IMAGE driven. Adobe can offer all the excuses it wants - apparently they have no imagination and/or creativity anymore - to suggest and/or imply they will be in violation of a so-called (new) software design protocol is absolutely beyond comprehension - PHOTOSHOP is all about imagery NOT text descriptors - Adobe under the guise of "improving the workflow" at the expense of real-time functionality suggests they are not to blame, but rather the OS is. This is BS - it is a marketing ploy to drive $$$ into their pockets at the expense of ours. The irony is today's OS systems tout ICON / Image driven GUI and yet the flagship imaging entity is not capable or is unwilling to support its loyal LONG-TERM users and customers and prefers to take away proven features that are vital to productive workflow - I am dumbfounded. I obviously have few choices, but one powerful choice I DO have is NOT to buy their product anymore.

Thankfully, I am willing to revert back to earlier versions of Photoshop to rectify any negative impact to valid and sane workflow. Shame on Adobe. You can best believe, if the number of product sold / rented (CC) declines - the issue will be corrected immediately.

It is amazing some of the decisions that are made by corporate suits, without really understanding how the real world operates. I'm prepared to hear their side of the story - but for as good as Photoshop is (was) - I will no longer support this product if Adobe continues to walk down this path.

Thank you so much, FX Designer.. my sentiments exactly, and I'm sure many others agree with you as well. We long-term users have been stunned by this, even though it's nothing new for those corporate suits to mess things up for the rest of us. The good old Bottom Line is the place to react, as usual. No more.

It is amazing how without using foul language, staying professional and simply expressing an opinion which is HONEST is deleted at the whim of the moderator.

The TRUTH must hurt - otherwise it wouldn't not have been deleted regarding the CS6 issue with NO THUMBNAIL - Adobe - you need to grow up - it will be only a matter of a day that this will probably be removed as well.

There are other means, Adobe, to get the message across, if not here - on the internet where you can't censor truthful comments.

REally?? Adobe deleted it??
I was wondering where your previous comment went!!....

I have resorted to downloading "sagethumbs" ... it slows things down
a bit, but at least I can now see my thumbnails... no thanks to Adobe.

Yep!! It seems that "Chris Cox" somehow found the truth based on ALL of the comments to date, was in his way of thinking, inappropriate and to use his "official" reason (as received in my email account - "Chris Cox, a moderator for Photoshop Family, gave this reason for the change: "not reading previous posts, off into conspiracy nut land"" - I take that "comment" to be purposely hurtful and borders on libel -as a defamatory remark which damages both my character and reputation as a designer, professional and paying Photoshop customer.

I would suggest, Mr. Cox, weigh his actions (and words) carefully. To NOT do so, may create an issue, he doesn't want to be a part of. I love it when offering construction criticism about an otherwise great product, a decision can be made to take his ball, quit the game and go home - The last time I checked, this is the U.S. and I have 1st Amendment freedoms and protections.

Mr. Cox - you need to get off your high horse and stop making unwarranted assumptions about how one thinks - otherwise, there may be some serious legal consequences.

Your physical location notwithstanding this is an internet forum and would the people/corporation maintaining this Forum in all probability not be perfectly within their rights to remove posts that they, for whatever reasons, find to be not in keeping with their forum policy?

Time to move on folks. I found an online visual icon creator months ago. Adobe for whatever reason doesn't feel it should supply this important part of an imaging program, alright. I don't like it either but there's an old saying: why beat a dead horse?
And their are solutions out there, as have been documented ad nauseum in this thread.
So let's all lower our blood pressure, quit attacking employees of Adobe who aren't able or willing to effect change, and just make your decisions down the road based on how important or simply annoying that is to you.
Spending so much time, taking everything personally, and making threats to someone is just self-indulgent and self-important, as the deleted poster I hope realizes by now.
Life is short: save it for the conflicts that really matter.

You will see that this thread has a long list of discontent with Adobe's handling of the situation. We are now years into W7 and W8 with no problem regarding the viewing of thumbnails except from Adobe.

There is a partial solution for you if you shoot jpegs alongside your Raw files. The jpegs will show up as icons and you can use the "large icons" selection to at least see jpegs. Otherwise, Grrrrrr! we are all really angry at Adobe's recalcitrant position.

I've been using Bridge, and have kept CS 5 along with CS 6. Still miss those thumbnails. Still irritating, despite all of the tech info that has been given by Adobe on the reasons for the omission. The reasons may make sense, or not, but doesn't make the extra effort any less bothersome.

Hey adobe. How about making a plugin for windows explorer that lets us see the actual image in explorer instead of a psd icon.

If some random dude on the internet could make a codec to allow us to have psd thumbnails, I think the entire development team at Adobe shouldn't have much trouble packaging a similar solution into CC. This is really political nonsense. Fix this problem. It's keeping a LOT of professionals from upgrading to your cloud service, and I would be surprised if it didn't cause those that kept their old versions just in case to abandon the new adobe for the old.
