P: Paste Shape Attributes doesn't work or doesn't appear in the menu

Contributor ,
Apr 28, 2025 Apr 28, 2025

When copy/pasting attributes from one shape layer to another, "paste attributes" isn't working. Attributes that were copied from one shape will not paste into another shape. Sometimes the option to paste doesn't even show up in the right click menu, it only allows the option to copy. This is a procedure I've done countless times, and this is the first I've encountered this issue.

Hi everyone! This issue should be resolved in the 26.9 release. When you get a chance, please update to the latest version and let us know if you're still seeing the same problems.

Thanks so much for your patience!

Hi @troyjack! I'm sorry to hear about the issue with pasting attributes.

I tested this out, and it worked normally for me. As a first step, let's try resetting the Photoshop preferences. This will restore the app to its default state and usually helps with unexpected issues. Just make sure to back up your workspace, brushes, and other settings, as resetting preferences will reset them. Here's how to do that: Reset Photoshop Preferences.

If that doesn't help, could you send a screen recording showing your workflow and recreating the issue? That would help us try to reproduce it.

Thanks a bunch!

Alek

I've confirmed that it works as intended on 25.12.3, but not in 26.6.0

Hi Aleke,

I've reset prefs (which I've had to do on a regular basis due to the amount of bugs in v26) and the behavior still exists.

A screen video of the behavior is attached.

Hi @troyjack

Thanks for sharing the video. I tried testing on my end and somehow got the error of the Paste Shape Attributes button being missing and not working first try. However, after restarting the app, I haven't been able to reproduce it again since.

Does this happen with every shape for you? Does it only occur when the fill is a gradient or when the shape's corners are rounded? If we can find a reliable way to reproduce this issue, I can forward it to the software team for investigation.

Thanks a bunch!

Alek

Hi Alek,

Thank you for taking the time to test. I tested with basic shapes with solid colors, and the behavior still exists. The attached video is after resetting prefs and performing a Safe Boot.

Hi @troyjack and @Anavel_000! Sorry for the delayed response. I have been able to reproduce this issue again even after updating to the version released today (26.6.1). I have forwarded this to the team at large for further investigating.

If you could share your System Info with us it could be helpful as well. You can find it in Photoshop under Help > System Info. Just copy the info to a text file and attach it to your response, or share it with us through Google Drive, WeTransfer, or another file-sharing platform.
Thanks a lot! 😊

I was able to reproduce the issue. Resetting preferences will fix it, but be aware that all unsaved actions and presets will be lost.

Hi! It looks like you have it under control and my system info is no longer required, but here it is just in case. For some reason I could not simply attach file to this message, so I am attaching the link to google drive. System info This is after I reinstalled version 25.12.3 though.

I use the the Copy Shape Attributes/Copy Shape Fill to duplicate my gradients to other shapes. These past 2 months, sometimes the feature works while most times it doesn't. Shutting off and turning on photoshop doesn't solve it. The Copy Attributes/Fill Option is available and clickable (it isn't greyed out) but the paste feature is not. I just repeat my attributes manually instead but the issue is a hassle.

I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong or if it is a bug.

Aside from the screenshot could you please double-check that you copied a fill?

»paste« (in any context) being grayed out hints that there simply might be no pastable clipboard-content.

Hi @kyousiri,

Thanks for bringing this up. As some of our experts already pointed out, the Paste Fill option being grayed out typically means there’s no valid fill data on the clipboard. However, I reproduced the steps you described using Photoshop v26.6, v26.7.0 & v26.8  , and here’s what I found.

Repro Steps:
1. Create two rectangular shapes.
2. Manually change their fill colors to two different ones.
3. Switch to the Move tool now.
4. Select the first shape layer and choose Copy Fill.
5. Select the second shape layer.
6. Paste Fill will be either greyed out, or attempting to Paste Fill will fail.
I've attached a screen recording for you to look over.

Observed Behavior:
• Sometimes, “Paste Fill” is grayed out.
• Other times, it appears active but doesn’t actually apply the copied color.

Workaround that helped:
Don't switch to the Move Tool or any other tool, manually select the layer, then perform Copy Fill and Paste Fill — this works.

This does appear to be an intermittent bug, and not user error. We appreciate your patience and detailed reporting.

I’ll make sure to pass this along to the product team for review. In the meantime, avoiding using the Move Tool or switching to any other tool workaround should help ensure a smoother experience.

Let us know if you run into anything else — we're always happy to help!

Best,
Anshul

Any word on when this will be fixed, or is there a workaround other than rolling back to an older version?

This is really hindering production.

Thank you

Hi @troyjack! I just checked in with the team, and it looks like this bug is still in the testing phase. I totally understand how frustrating that can be, and I really appreciate your patience while we work on it.

We don’t have a fix date just yet, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as there’s an update.

Thanks again for hanging in there! ^AR

Thank you for checking, @Aleke...

In addition, I just noticed that Paste Attributes DOES work when MULTIPLE objects are selected. It seems to not work only when a single object is selected. Hope that helps with the testing 🙂
