P: Photoshop 2025 v26.6 Bug - black document window

Explorer ,
Apr 24, 2025 Apr 24, 2025

Photoshop 2025 v26.5 was working absolutely fine, then I made the mistake of updating to the latest patch, version 26.6.0 on my M4 Mac Mini.

After updating to 26.6, the actual document window is solid black - even if I open a photo or previous document...

With-Graphics-Processing.png

Even though the Layers and Channels palette preview thumbnails are showing what's in the document...

Layers-and-Channels.png

After digging around in Preferences, I tried turning off the "Use Graphics Processing" option and relaunching Photoshop afterwards, and it's working fine again...

I'm just wondering if this is a bug related to the M4 Mac Mini graphics driver compatibility with the version 26.6.0 release? And, if so, when can we expect a fix from Adobe.

I've discovered the workaround for now, but obviously turning off the Graphics Processing setting will affect perfomance. Like I say, with this option switched on previously to the latest 26.6.0 release, it was working fine so it must be a new bug with 26.6.

I'm never updating this software ever again!!

Hi all! The team has released a fix for this issue with the latest update for Photoshop to v26.6.1.
To update Photoshop, click "Update" in the Creative Cloud desktop app next to Photoshop. More detailed instructions for updating

Thanks!

@Marcomm70 Photoshop version 26.6 is still in Beta, try reporting the issue on the Photoshop Beta forum

Beta versions are only meant for testing purposes and not recommended for your daily/work use

Da nessuna parte è indicata come versione BETA, tanto è che risulta come aggiornamento di Phoshop, nessuno di noi in Azienda utilizza versioni beta, anche perchè solitamente queste versioni sono segnalate come BETA

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Ne link che mi avete indicato ho cliccato su Photoshop e non esiste un argomento attinente al mio problma, ho già capito che dovrò risovermela da solo in attesa che esca una versione aggiornata che non mi crei questo problema.

Hi @Marcomm70, Thanks for sharing those details. I totally understand how important a smooth experience is for your workflow.

To help us investigate further with the product team, would you happen to have:

  • A screenshot showing the issue (if you captured it before reverting)?

  • A couple of sample image files that were displaying black after the update?

If so, please upload them via a file-sharing service (Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc.) and share the link here, or send via DM if you prefer confidentiality. I’d be happy to test on our end and escalate if reproducible.

Just to clarify, Ged: Photoshop 26.6 is indeed a legit public release, not a beta. There was a Phase 1 rollout on April 21st to about 10% of users, including in regions like Italy, Norway, Poland, Turkey, Israel, Czech Republic, Argentina, and Mexico. The full global rollout is expected by April 24th, so you’re seeing the correct official version.

Appreciate your patience and help as we dig into this!

Best,

Anshul Saini

I should also add that I also have the following older versions of Photoshop installed on the M4 Mac mini and they all work fine with the "Use Graphics Processing" option turned on...

Photoshop 2021 - version 22.2.0 installed and works fine

Photoshop 2022 - version 23.5.4 installed and works fine

Photoshop 2023 - version 24.7.4 installed and works fine

And prior to 26.6.0 patch, version 26.5 was working fine with Graphics Processing switched on in Preferences.

I updated Photoshop to v26.6.0 this morning and have the exact same problem on my MacMini M1 2020.
Disabling the graphics processor has also helped me. I hope the fix comes soon.

I woke up this morning, updated Photoshop and almost had a heart attack when I opened a file and saw a black square! Thank you SO MUCH for the advice about the Graphic Processing setting. I did as you suggested and I can now see the files. This is really unacceptable for Adobe to not have this kink fixed before releasing the update.

Oh it looks like 26.6 is brand new, try resetting preferences.

I can confirm the bug. I've had the same problem since I updated to Photoshop 26.6 today. Macos version is 15.4.1, hardware: Macbook Pro M4 PRo

Have you tested this, or is it a guess? I don't think that's a good way to go if you have to reset the preferences, after all you then have to reset all the individual settings.

A small addition from my side... the problem only exists in RGB mode. If you work in CMYK mode etc., the images are displayed correctly even with an active GPU.

Good spot! Yes, it fine in CMYK documents, but if you switch that document to RGB then it turns into a solid black window!

Pretty poor beta testing by Adobe, how on earth has this been missed before pushing out the update to it's porr unsuspecting customers?!

It happened to me too, and your fix worked for me, so thanks for that. I am using Studio M1 Max. I also noticed that changing mode from RGB to CMYK displays the image without switching off the Graphic Processing.  I am hoping it is a minor oversight rather than a persistent bug.

Hi Photoshop community,

After using Photoshop successfully a long time, today I only see a black image to whatever I through at Photoshop. The small preview in "Layers" show the images as expected. I had to disable "Graphics Processor" in the Performance settings to make the image display as expected. But since I'm on a M4 Pro, I'd love to use the GPU for performance.

Any ideas, is this a bug? First time this happened, also tried a system reboot.

@Baard24217115usul It looks like this is a common bug that has been reported by others. I'll merge your thread with that existing thread so that you do not miss any updates.

I can confirm that this issue also effects Intel Macs and Radeon graphics cards, not just Apple Silicon machines.

Running Ps 26.6 and getting black images any time I open a CR3 raw file. It displays correctly in Camera Raw but renders as black when opened into Ps.

Hoping they get this one nailed down right away as I don't really wish to work without GPU acceleration.

One additional data point...

The solid black rendering issue in RGB mode appears to be a problem with Photoshop itself and NOT Camera Raw. I rolled back Ps to v26.5 but left Camera Raw at 17.3 and the issue is resolved.

@heffSTL Thanks for sharing these details.

We’ve attempted to reproduce the issue on our end but haven’t been able to replicate the behavior.

To help us investigate further, could you please share your system information? You can find it by going to Help > System Info while in Photoshop. Just copy the text, paste it into a text file, and attach it here. That’ll help us take a closer look!

Looking forward to your response!
