P: Photoshop 23.2.2 Can't open/update vector smart object in Illustrator

Just today, I updated to macOS Monterey and now I am having problems opening vector smart objects in Photoshop files. If Illustrator is closed, when I double click the smart object (or choose edit contents) Illustrator will launch but the file will not open.

If Illustrator is open and I try to open the smart object, I get a Mac error window that says "The application "Adobe Illustrator 2022" can't be opened" with a -1703 error code.

I'm using Photoshop 23.2.1 and Illustrator 26.0.3, which I went back to after seeing the problem first occur in 26.1.

The computer is iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch 2019  |  3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9  |  macOS Monterey 12.3

Thanks in advance

This should be resolved in macOS 12.3.1 that just went out.

Anyone made any progress with this? We're facing the same issues with Illustrator, Photoshop and inDesign with our new M1s working from our Synology. We've tried all number of settings tweaks to the Synology with no change. These issues only started after the users got their new M1s.

Generally one workaround is to unmount the server share and mount it back, but our users aren't happy with that.

Hello

I suddenly started getting this OS message last night when double-clicking Smart Objects
in my layer palette to open/edit in Illustrator (as usual!)

Any advice?
I reinstalled back to Photoshop 23.2.0

@anthonyk98004095

Check the file association for the extension .ai and Illustrator:

  • Finder: Cmd+I (Get Info) on any Illustrator file. Confirm "Open With" is set to Illustrator for .ai.
  • Bridge: Bridge menu > Preferences > File Type Associations > Confirm .ai is set to Illustrator.

I have this same problem. The Open With is set up to AI files just fine. I still get the error when trying to open smart objects. It just happened after the last system updates

I'm going to second this in hopes that it adds more attention. I'm getting this exact same error on both machines that I updated to MacOS 12.3 today. I'm up to date with the Photoshop 23.2.2 and Illustrator 26.1, but this also happened when I went back to the last available 2021 versions of Photoshop (22.5.6) and Illustrator (25.4.1).

I realize this was something caused by the MacOS update, but i don't know if this is Adobe's or Apple's problem to fix. It's killing my ability to complete a project and update previous projects.

Macos Monterey 12.3 breaks dinamic link between Photoshop and Illustrator. I try to open a vector smart object created in Illustrator and it gives me error:

The application “Adobe Illustrator 2022” can’t be opened. -1703

This error did not show up on Monterey 12.2.

I've contacted both Adobe Support and Apple Support about this and, in short, they both say it's the other's responsibility to fix, so yeah, I think this will likely be added to the pile of perpetually unresolved frustrations.

@anthonyk98004095 when you say "rebuilt" did you rebuild with MacOS 12.3 or an earlier version? and did you erase your startup drive in this process?

I'm a volunteer and do not work for Adobe — and I  don't have any real insight into this since it's working for me with Big Sur and PS 2022.

I did notice, though, that the error message has a Finder icon on it. To me, that indicates that the message is from Apple, not Adobe. I looked up [ macOS Error Code 1703 ] and found one reference: "errAEWrongDataType", whatever that means.

https://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/lenzo/html/mac_errors.html

I also looked up "errAEWrongDataType" and found a link on the Apple Developer site:

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/coreservices/erraewrongdatatype?changes=late_1_2

It says, "Wrong descriptor type" and I don't know what that means either!

Maybe someone else can make sense of what I've found. If it were happening to me, I would back up my customization first, then try resetting preferences in both applications. If that failed, I would uninstall using the Creative Cloud app, use the CC cleaner, the reinstall from the CC app. I really can't say if this will help or not though.

Ok, Found a fix

Go to properties (of Smatt Object) - click on 'Save as Linked File'

It will save a file - you then have to add '.ai' to the filename - and you've got your illustrator file back.

You can try and embed it again after.

I had a complicated illustration and it would have been a disaster if I couldn't have gotten the illustrator file back!
