P: Photoshop opens window too small when using external monitor

Community Beginner ,

Version; 22.5.1

OS: Mac Big Sur (11.5)

Reproduce: Have a non-retina external monitor connected to a Retina Macbook as the main screen. Open a file. It will open at 100% but with the window sized smaller than the image.

Expected: Files used to open with the entire image visible within the window, so you don't have to resize the window, nor click the green mazimize button.

Seems this issue was introduced after version 22.4.3; See these two discussions for further explanation / confirmation of the problem:

and

Hi all,

We're happy to announce the April 2022 release of Photoshop 23.3. This update includes the fix for this issue.

To update Photoshop to 23.3, click "Update" in the Creative Cloud desktop app next to Photoshop. More detailed instructions for updating

Let us know if the update resolves the problem for those affected and share your feedback with us.

Thanks,

Nikunj

Hi PECourtejoie -- sadly, it continued to happen when I set the application frame. I was thinking I was overlooking a Preferences setting, or didn't have the righ menu item checked/unchecked. But your suggestion of using the Script Events Manager was spot on. At first I was confused by the instructions on that page and thought I'd have to write JavaScript (I don't know how to write JavaScript), but then I saw the screenshots here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem/fit-on-screen-automatically-in-photoshop/m-p/10576298

Same problem here. iMac Pro running the latest version of everything. Photos open up in a window about half the size of the original file. The frame is anchored top left so it effectively crops the right side and bottom.

Hi There,

Thank you for fixing ghosting issues quickly with 22.5.1 update.

However, the issue with image opening at a cropped view remains.

See below.

Hi, does it happen if you enable the Application frame in the windows menu?

I haven't tried it with Application frame as I went back to the 22.4.3 as
this new version is too buggy. And that kicked off another set of troubles
with PS not showing the custom workspace that I had saved.
I imported the saved workspace and it shows in the Library folders but does
not show in the dropdown menu. 😞 Wasted almost a day with this.
If you have any idea as to how I can restore my previous workspace in the
22.4.3, that would be really very helpful 🙂

Thanks.

Yes - so glad to see I am not the only one experiencing this issue. It's driving me nuts especially when I use copy / new / paste, but only the top 25% of the pasted image is shown within the new window. I am REALLY hoping someone at Adobe sees this and fixes it soon!

I'd also like to downgrade to a previous less "adventurous" attempt. How in detail is this process done, while retaining all of my actions, plugins, recent files menu, preferences, etc.?

Hi Bman007,
It is easy to move your Workspace, actions and keyboard shortcuts across to
the next version by going to Window> Workspace> New Workspace and make sure
to check 3 boxes to export settings.

However, when I downgraded to the earlier version of PS, unfortunately I
was not able to load the workspace into the older version. When imported,
I can see the workspace files in the correct Library folders but not in the
dropdown menu within PS to select my saved Workspace.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for commenting on this, Jeff. I've been experiencing the same problem since upgrading. I tried to resolve in this Adobe community, with no luck.. thought I was the only one this was affecting.

I hope we get some improvement with the next bug fix.
Cheers

I just added my vote to this bug report. This has been driving me nuts!

I have two large external monitors and my (open) MacBook pro. I can't close the laptop case (clamshell mode) as that triggers a different bug that causes Photoshop to crash.

I'm using 22.5.1 and this bug was first reported a couple of releases back. Very disappointed they're not treating newly-introduced breakage with more urgency...

Since a year I have the problem, that all files open mainly hidden in a way too small window - like the attached screenshot shows.

I'm working on a MacBookPro with a large second screen. The bug is happening on the large monitor.

It's a bug, that really makes working much more tedious, I have always manually to adjust the window borders and it's not fixed since a year.

While @PECourtejoie 's suggestion to use a script and SEM led to a "Correct answer", the problem is that using the "Fit on screen" menu item is different from the good behavior that happens if you are not using the external monitor. Without the external monitor, an image will open either at 100% zoom if it is smaller than the screen, but if the image is larger than the screen it will open at a pseudo-"Fit to Screen" percentage ("pseudo-" because the percentage is one of PSD's default steps, i.e. 12.5%, 16.7%, 25%, etc., as opposed to say 19.9%). This is ideal if you work on both small and large images.

With the SEM / menu item scripting solution, the workaround to get the above behavior is to create an action with two items: insert menu item "Zoom Out", them insert menu item "Zoom In" (or vice versa), and add that action to SEM. This gives you an image open at 100% if smaller than your screen, and 12.5%, 16.7%, 25%, etc. if the image is larger than your screen.
