P: PNG Images Opens with Distortion

From time to time, when I open a png image, it will appear as bright, distorted lines.

I have deleted all Photoshop preference files, uninstalled the app, reinstalled it and restarted the computer. Does not prevent it from happening.

When it happens, I can quit Photoshop and reopen it and the png appears correctly. But then it will happen again later that day or the next. Rinse/Repeat.

Very annoying. Please get better quality control Photoshop. CC seems to get progressively worse in terms of bugs.

This PNG distortion issue should be fixed with the Photoshop CC 2018 (19.1.2) update which is now available.
Please install the update and let us know if you still see this issue.

To update, click Update next to Photoshop CC in the Creative Cloud desktop application.
If you don't see the update right away, click the 3 dots in the upper right and choose Check for App Updates.

Pete

Shawnna, it would be one thing if this was a standalone product that you purchase once and then never pay for again... but guess what - Adobe is taking money out of our pockets every month for more and more bugs each time.... and they just INCREASED THE FEE! Pretty unacceptable.

Whenever I try to open an image saved from the web or saved from a different app (both Adobe's and 3rd party's) it shows a color bands like this. You can see the actual file's screenshot taken from Adobe XD below this image.

 RackMultipart201803111126261e4-08248dc6-50c5-4c20-87b8-476405e65b99-1862945926.png

You can check the original image in this link incase you wanna test.

This is so annoying as I cannot open any images that is modified or created outside Photoshop!

I tried different color settings, but the image only keeps changing into different color bands.

Thanks in advance.

After updating to Photoshop 19.1.0 on OS X 10.12.6 this morning I discovered that opening screenshots results in a corrupted image.

Example:

Original screenshot:
RackMultipart2018012444895n65j-b477d1c6-3b5a-4f1a-bf93-5581ca068270-983757303.png

How it looks in Photoshop:
RackMultipart2018012410238912y-092015ec-571c-49ad-9f4d-ac37929771cb-683009122.png

This happens consistently with every screenshot, but other files seemed to be fine. If I drag the screenshot into a document as a smart object, it displays fine—until I open the smart object, at which point it corrupts.

I suspected it was something to do with the colour profile as PNGs set to sRBG were opening fine. I made a new document with the colour profile set to Display (the default for screenshots on OS X), put some stuff into it and saved it as a PNG.

Opening that PNG up resulted in the same sort of corruption show above.

So it seems to be limited to PNGs with a colour profile set to Display. Seems small, but it's very frustrating at the moment as I use a lot of screenshots in my work. Hope it gets fixed soon!

It came out last week, if I remember correctly.  If The AdobeCC did not offer the update, you sometimes need to log out and back in to have it force itself to find out about updates. (I wish Adobe would fix that to be more reliable and quick to pick up on updates)

Hi Andra,

Thanks for sharing that screenshot. Is that a png that you were attempting to open? Have you tried to open this image in preview or any other programs?

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi Andra,

When was the last time you opened this file? This thread concerns png files, not psds. I'd like to take a look at it though. Would you please email the psd to me? I'll attach my email below.

Thanks,
Hannah

The file is around 500 MB. Should I send via https://wetransfer.com/ or another platform?
I opened today around 6:30 pm.

Hi. I have been having the same problem for at least 6 months and it's costing me a lot of time to find work-arounds. As with InDesign, if there were competition, Adobe wouldn't be able to get away with this backsliding and slow response to their many bugs. We pay monthly; our jobs depend upon it, and we don't ever get a refund of subscription dollars for the glitches that are released with updates in AI, ID, PS, et al.

When is the fix going to be released? Can we get an ETA? I can hold my clients off a bit longer, but am running out of time.

Hi. I have been having the same problem for at least 6 months with PNG files corrupting upon import. It takes lot of time to use work-arounds.

When will a fix be released?  I can hold my clients off a bit longer, but am running out of time. Does Adobe ever offer partial refunds for the many bugs released with updates to help offset the time loss & frustration? Between InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, there have been many glitches.

(photo attached) When I try placing a photo in photoshop, a rectangle of random color appears where the photo should be. It looks like an error on a TV. I can transform it but it still looks like this. Has anyone else had this happen/know how to fix it?

Just a quick post to say that since Hannah's work (and all the team on this) with the new update I've just realised I've not had a single PNG problem so thanks so much for your work.

You guys rock.

Thanks, Jim. We also had a lot of help from users to help diagnose, which always makes things easier. So glad to hear the png issues are resolved!
