P: Program error with actions that have save command in 24.3

When I use save in my Action I get that error when the file is about to save:

"photoshop could not complete your request because of a program error'"

Hmm.. Like this is the broken version in Photoshop 2022 (the version that was completely excluded from the official release), I expected the hotfix to come out in 1-2 weeks, but it seems to be getting slower than I thought.

I have exactly the same problem, the "close" action is a workaround, but quite annoying, because every time Photoshop requires another input (enter), this rendering this workaround useless for batch actions...

When I simply have "save" as a step in the action, I get the error.

@lesleydownie  No i mean, This is a big bug that happens in the last save phase even if Photoshop is used properly, so I expected it to be fixed quickly with a hotfix. (Last year, due to an image-destroying bug, the Hotfix version was released much faster than the usual Adobe release schedule.)

Same problem here, I have an action for save as that has been a central part of my workflow for years. I updated to V 24.3 not long after it came out and actions would not work. I rolled back to V 24.2 and thanfully actions work there. Yesterday, I re-installed 24.3, deleted the old action, recorded a new one and it still is not working. I'm working on a 2018 Mackbook Pro running OS 12.6.3 (Monterey). I have rolled back to V 24.2 and hope this can be fixed soon. Thank you.

I just want to add that this is exactly why I have at least one prior version of PS installed at all times. I never delete the older version. Since Adobe went to a subscription model in the cloud, I've experienced numerous work stoppage bugs, on such a regular basis that I always have a prior version installed so that nasty bugs like this don't keep me from working. 

 

Never let the Adobe installers delete your previous version of PS. Having two versions installed is essential to a smooth workflow.

I am running an action that I have had for ages and never had an issue.

Now running it, and the part of the action is simply saving changes to a smart object, it gives up the error

 

"Could not complete the command because of a program error"

 

I can manually save, then go to the next step (close the smart object) in the action and all goes fine.

This only seems to happen with version 24.3

It does not happen in version 24.2.1 and if I try the beta version 24.4, they both work fine.

It's not a complicated step, it's simply saving the .psb

"Should be", or IS? Because until you fix this - and this post was made over 10 days ago now - I don't HAVE a functioning photo editor from you, I have an expensive, pay by the month, slow to start disk hog with a patheticly antiquated scripting "language" which hasn't been updated for 30 years. Do you EVER test your new releases before you put them out there? Because this is at least the THIRD time I can remember my actions (which work poorly and inflexibly enough as it is) being broken by one of your alleged "updates".

 

What particularly infuriates me is that I didn't even WANT this update. Since I have little faith in you not to screw it up, I was perfectly happy (aside from being infuriated by your lack of effort to improve Actions, but that's a chronic thing) puttering along on the earlier release. However last night I tried to do a photo merge out of Bridge. (Which, incidentally, you screwed up in the last release and whose joke of a "Collections" system finally persuaded me to buy ACDSee as my primary DRM. I only use Bridge these days for a limited number of things, like that, now.) I've done this before with that version of PS. It worked. But THIS time I got an inexcusable error message telling me that to proceed I would HAVE to upgrade to the latest version of PS. Not "recommend", no, "HAVE to". So I did. After all, what could POSSIBLY go wrong?

 

Oh, right, because you never bothered to test the update properly, you could bork all of my actions and cripple my workflow, rendering PS effectively unusable for me (again), THAT'S what could go wrong.

 

If you've got a fix for the sloppy coding of 24.3, don't tell us about it, GIVE it to us.

You might want to do two things:

  • Revert to the previous version using the Creative Cloud app
  • Turn off automatic updates for applications in preferences for the Creative Cloud app

Adobe staff will announce in this thread when they have a fix and it is released.

@jane-e As an exception(TMI), even if you turn off automatic updates, sometimes the settings are ignored and updated. Therefore, need to always check and back up settings folder by date.
About 2019 auto update bug in creative cloud?It's been there since then. I wanted to let you know that turning off automatic updates is not the absolute answer.

Thanks for the advice, but I think you may have missed a couple of points in my post.

 

  • The reason that I upgraded is that Bridge would not do a photo merge unless I "Upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop".

 

Now, a couple of fun additional facts here. First, I was using Bridge 2022 when I got that message. Why? Because in Bridge 2023, Adobe stuffed the Slideshow mode by removing the (already limited) ability to display metadata under the image. I therefore continued to use Bridge 2022 to keep what functionality Bridge had in that regard. So what happened after I upgraded PS to the latest version?

 

I still got the same message.

 

Figuring that Bridge 2022 was simply too stupid to know that the latest version of PS WAS now installed, I opened Bridge 2023 and tried the PhotoMerge from there instead. It... ran. Sort of. Though for some reason the Latest! And! Greatest! version of Photoshop seems to think that a "photomerge" of 4 horizontal images is best done by joining two of them together and putting them at the top of the canvas and then joining the other two together and putting them at the bottom of the canvas with a huge, empty space between the two.

 

So clearly Adobe has made yet ANOTHER "improvement", but that's a separate conversation.

 

I don't need to keep using Bridge 2022 since I now do most metadata management through the vastly superior ACDSee Ultimate, so the error message is no longer relevant.

 

Second point:

  • Yeah, bit I don't HAVE automatic updates on. I intentionally do not have automatic updates turned on. As I said in my post, I manually triggered the update for one reason and one reason alone, that I thought it was the only way to get Bridge to launch a PhotoMerge in Photoshop. As it turned out (a) that was a Bridge issue, specifically a Bridge 2022 issue and (b) it looks like PhotoMerge has been "improved" to the point of complete uselessness.

 

If Adobe screw up, and here they screwed up not for the first time in trashing Actions, they need to issue a fix. Not someday, not next time they get around to it, but rather As Soon As They Have One. The very day.

Smart object error in actions.
Photoshop 24.3.0
Mac OS Monterey 12.5.1

I regularly use a number of actions that require a smart object to be saved and closed as one of the steps in the action. 

After updating to 24.3 such actions no longer work, and get stuck whenever the smart object needs to be saved. The error message says: Could not complete the command due to a program error. 

I have ensured that Photoshop has Full Disk Access in Mac OS system prefs as per this article

You'll find a video demonstrating the error below. The action in the demo is just a few simple steps that trigger the error whereby a layer is converted to a smart object, a color overlay applied, and the smart object is then saved (triggering the error).

Note how the action stops at the step where the smart object is to be saved. The smart object can be saved manually and closed in order to continue. I also included a demonstration of how the exact same action works flawlessly in Photoshop 23.5.5

You can download the demonstration artwork and the action file to reproduce the bug here. (I couldn't attach the .atn file below).

Since I have many customers who use these actions, I'd like to hear if there is a fix coming soon that doesn't involve simply reverting to the previous version of Photoshop.

I updated PS last night and since then I've had issues with running certain actions. One in particuar I use often and everytime it gets to the 'select subject' part of the action the error message 

"Could not complete the command because of a program error" comes up. I've uninstalled the newest version and went back to an old one and it's still doing the same thing. Any advice?
