P: PS v27.2 & Beta 27.3 Files taking longer to open

Community Beginner ,
Dec 17, 2025 Dec 17, 2025

Th latest update to stable Photoshop 27.2 is taking ages to open certain files, files that were previouly fine on the last versions

I am on Windows 11, my system is Ryzen, Nvidea and 32 gig

This started in Beta 27.2, where suddenly it would not open files that opened perfectgly fine in the previous version, now it seems that whatever you did in Beta 27.2 you have now added to the latest stable build.

These files vary, one for example is only 35MB, yet takes over 2 mins to load, and files that are 1gig plus that do the same, these files open in seconds in previous version

The only thing I can think/see is something to do with linked files?? The file I mentioned that's 35MB only consists of linked files

Anyone else seen this behaviour with latest Beta and stable versions??

Hey @lovephotoshopCC

May I ask you to try some of the optimization steps listed here: https://adobe.ly/4hQ8Wo4

Specifically, make sure your Graphics Card Drivers are up-to-date.

Also, note that PSD/PSB compression will slow down open/save times massively, sometimes 2x - 5x. This may not be very noticeable for small files, but for really big files (which is where you mostly need it), it makes a big difference.

Compression is disabled in Preferences > File Handling.

Opening from external storage or over a network will also be a lot slower.

Hi @markd48987597, thanks for reaching out!
Does this only happen when you’re opening files, or do you notice slowdowns while working on them too? Also, where are these files stored—on the cloud, a NAS, an external drive, or an internal hard drive? If they’re on a network or removable media, this guide might help:
https://adobe.ly/4rU21Po
Could you also share your System Info? You can find it in Photoshop under Help > System Info. Just copy the details into a text file and attach it to your response, or share it through Google Drive, WeTransfer, or any other file-sharing platform.
Thanks!
Alek

Hi

Thanks for the reply, here are some details:

Working on the problem files is fine, except when I save a file thats linked into the other document, it then takes the document, with that linked file, ages to update - same problem as when opening the file originally

All working file are local to the machine, on the internal SSD, not NAS and not cloud

I have reverted back to stable version 27.1, and all is fiine on this version, files open as they should and all works ok, its only the latest version and the last 2 versions of beta that have this probelem for me

Attach is the sys info:

Same problem here, only seem to be for files with linked files embedded. Beta 27.1 works fine but later versions and the released version have the problem.

One thing I noticed is that Photoshop is creating multiple temp files on the scratch disk, like 7 or 8 and taking forever to create each one.

Hi @Aleke - some info on my temp files in case it helps - thanks for the observation @MADPhoto

Just checked my temp files
This is the situation using  stable photoshop (27.1.0), working with my files, with linked files inside - files open fine and everything works as it should

markd48987597_1-1766040322712.png

I then reinstalled latest photoshop beta, opened the same files and this is the temp file situation, seriously slow opening times, and slow updates when linked files are saved

Hi @markd48987597, @MADPhoto,

Thank you for sharing the screenshots and the detailed observations around temp file behavior. This is very helpful and gives us something concrete to work with.

To help us validate this on our side and escalate it effectively, could you please share the following:

• A sample PSD that shows the issue and includes linked files

– You can use File > Package in Photoshop to bundle the PSD and linked assets, then zip it

– Upload it to Google Drive / WeTransfer and share the link here (or via DM if you prefer)

• A short screen recording comparing behavior across versions:

– Photoshop 27.1 (working as expected)

– Photoshop 27.2 public / 27.2 beta / 27.3 beta (slow open and temp file spike)

– Showing the slowness and issue occurs during workflow

This side-by-side comparison will help us clearly demonstrate the regression to the product and engineering teams and should speed up investigation.

Thanks again for taking the time to capture these details. Once we have the sample files and recording, we’ll move this forward internally and keep you posted.

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

HI @Anshul_Saini @Aleke

Well, first off that was a long winded pain in the ass just to package the files up - that process really needs some work, failed several times for missing files, incorrect this and that, and then, when it finally looked like it was going to save it, it failed again stating out-of-date neural filters!!!!!

Surly, if the package process sees that there is a files missing or another error with a linked file, PLEASE tell us the file its in or the layer name - !!!!

Because of this I have had to basically strip my files down and remove a lot of stuff for the packaging to work, luckily the problem still exists, though not quite as bad a my original full fat file

I use linked files, artboards and generator a lot, as I basically need to process a lot of images, I am not making master art work here, so anything that slows the process hits really hard.

@Anshul_Saini - I have messaged youwith the link to the zip file

Hi @markd48987597

Thanks for the detailed context, that’s very helpful and definitely relevant for escalation. Just to clarify, I checked with Anshul and he hasn’t received a DM or link with the packaged file yet. It’s possible the message didn’t go through. Could you please re-share the download link here, or send it again via DM to either Anshul or me?

As soon as we have the file, we’ll move this forward with the product team for investigation and keep you updated on next steps or if engineering needs any additional information.

Regards,

Srishti

That was the case probably, @markd48987597. I’ve received your message and the ZIP file link. Currently, the link is set to private. Could you please update the sharing settings so that anyone with the link can access it? That will allow me and the wider product and engineering team to open it.

Once that’s done, we’ll take this forward internally.

Thank you again for the detailed testing and for highlighting the packaging workflow gaps as well. That feedback is noted.

Anshul Saini

I wanted to report I am having the same issue.

Last week my files with linked files contained in them functioned "normally" and as expected. Both for opening and packaging.

This week the very same files take ages to load; I get the "pinwheel of death" on my macbook - never got it before at all.  Something is defintely wrong.  I also can no package files into a folder as usual.  It lags, and inevitably crashes.  I am rather upset with recently being told I will have to pay more and now everything is also slower since the last update. I am VERY dissapointed and haven't gotten any work done in days, meanwhile I am still paying for a product I can not use as I intended.

Hi @markd48987597, @MADPhoto, @Matt_Houlihan, @Mario372256797cxg,

Thank you all for the detailed reports and your patience while we investigated this matter.

I can confirm that we’re now able to reproduce the slow open / update behavior internally when working with PSD shared by @markd48987597 that contain linked files in Photoshop 27.2 and the recent beta builds. This is a regression compared to 27.1, and your use cases have been shared directly with the product and engineering teams for active investigation.

For now, the recommended workaround is to stay on Photoshop 27.1, as it does not exhibit this behavior.

We understand how disruptive this has been, especially for production workflows, and we appreciate everyone who took the time to provide files and clear comparisons across versions. That information was key in getting this escalated.

We’ll follow up here as soon as we have an update to share.

Regards,

Anshul Saini

Hey there! This is happening to me as well with the latest Photoshop 27.2 version. I also have the beta version installed, and it’s working normally. I downgraded the main Photoshop to 27.1, and everything is working perfectly again. I’ll wait for version 27.3 before upgrading. Have a nice day!

I didn't know how easy it was to downgrade! Thanks for putting it out there - I googled it, downgraded and everything works normally again! 27.1 gets work done.
