Tried the new Select and mask feature by following one of your tutorials. However I could not get anything close to a selection. It seems after using the quick selection tool and than the refine edge tool, in deselects instead of adds making a worse selection. Currently am going back to 2015 until it's fixed
Well, I would but it crashes after several brush strokes. I noticed another user had the same problem with an amd video card that was having the same issue. Tried replying their but it wouldn't except my log in. I did capture a dump file if that would help. It' 448m though.
I use the magic wand. click select and mask use the refine edge during which it makes the selection worse, not better and eventually crashes.
Jeff, I did a bit of digging into windows event viewer and found this at the time the crash occurred. Also I have the "huge," Photoshop crashdump on my one cloud. If you want it let me know and will post a link. I hope it helps:

Having similar issues with AMD card on Windows 10 and PS 2015.5. It seems that Adobe products (PS, LR, Premiere) have compatibility issues with AMD ..at least they do on my configuration especially since the GPU enhancement was incorporated? I'm looking for a moderately priced compatible (NVIDIA, ?) card that works well. I just don't have time to keep chasing display driver c rashes, AMD drivers, etc. ...Does anyone have a recommendation for a compatible stable graphics card that works with Adobe?
ok, disabling it resolved the crash. however, after making the initial selection and then using the refine edge tool, it deselects things I want instead of adding them. And these pictures I'm trying it on are very high resolution.
Unfortunately Jim, my friend has a top of the line NVidia card on his that was listed by adobe as compatible. It does the same thing on his. The conflict is the adobe code. I've been running the suite on this machine without a hitch till now and am running a cheaper AMD 7750hd radeon. no other software I have does this except PS. I'm hoping adobe will figure out the glitch and resolve it soon. It has to do with the way it interfaces with the GPU, "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding."
I am having the same problem. I disabled the "Use Graphics Processor" and restarted Photoshop and it's still awful. A selection that would have taken me minutes has taken hours and it starts trying to select things in the background that are not even in close proximity to my original selection. I have updated my graphics driver and that didn't help either. I am beyond frustrated at this point.
Here's another screenshot of what is happening. It selected the house in the background when I was trying to clean up the selection of her face and ponytail.

That doesn't look right. In your second screen shot, were you only using the Refine Edge brush and brushing on the edges only? Was there any Radius setting on the right? The first one looks like a display issue, did you try another view mode or display (zoom) level? Any screen recording would help too. Thanks.
Sorry about that, yes in the second image I was just using the refine edge brush and only brushing the edges and there was no radius on the settings. The first one didn't have any of the weird blocks/graphics until I let off of the mouse after doing the refine edge. When it finished processing that was the result. I did a screen recording last night. I just tried the select and mask today and it did better than yesterday, but it was still a far cry from what I am used to.
Thanks for sharing. Since it is a rather high res image, you may want to work in a more zoomed in display and perhaps try other view modes like Overlay or On Black/On White or Blank and White to get a better view and accuracy of the mask. Binary marching Ants view is difficult to view gray scale mask. I would also suggest not using the Refine brush to brush too much on areas that you know are definite foreground, such as right in the center of the face, as that would give the wrong hints to the algorithms. If the updated driver doesn't crash for you, you can try turning back on the GPU drawing preference.
the way you work with this feature, is really weird and you cannot expect it to work this way. You are brushing over areas that do not need refinement, because you know, that you want to have them selected (like parts of the face). Your brush is WAY TOO large! BTW, your machine seems to be superslow. Check, if you ́re running out of RAM during that action. You ́ve only assigned 60% RAM.
Am Sorry people. I took a high res image like this to a "Techno nerd," friend of mine who has the latest gear, 8 core cpu, NVidia 6g vram and and 32g high speed ram. he's been Photoshopping for years. Even his pc bogged down. He then switched to the last version with refine edge and did a nice clean selection if less than 3 minutes
Since disabling the GPU a lot of other option don't work and eventualy during a longer session, it still crashes. BTW AMD released another driver and I did update, the problem still is there.
According to this and other forums, the problem is not the video card brand or driver as it is happening across all brands. Also it is only happening with "Select and Mask."
From what I've seen, during the select and mask the system uses a lot more system ram than the older refine edge did even though it's suppose to use GPU memory.
Thanks, but this is they way I would have made a selection using the previous version and I would have made a clean selection and moved on to the next step in my workflow in a matter of minutes. I did a similar selection the day before prior to the update and it was fast and easy.
Here is another attempt. I cleared out as much RAM as I possibly could. Prior to opening PS my RAM usuage was 18% and jumps to 56% running PS with one internet browser tab open as well. Anyway, I took the suggestions of zooming in. I used the quick select tool prior to this recording and then opened select and mask to use the refine edge tool. I wanted it to add the edges that were missed with the quick select tool. I am using the "+" for refine edge. It is having a hard time separating the wisps of her ponytail from the background and removed her lips and tip of her nose from the selection. Also it would not pick up the edges of her arms. This is super frustrating. As I've said, prior to updating I could have quickly and cleanly separated her from the background and barely needed to refine any edges. Also the yellow dot in the video is not the actual size of the brush I am using. That is part of the screen recorder. My brush is very small - size 10.
Traci, you are not alone. I'd suggest going back to the previous version until adobe realizes that we have been using the refine edge for over a year and know what we're talking about when something is wrong. BTW, here's a low res pic I just did in 6 minutes in 2015. Can't even get close to it in 2015.5
Thank John. I wish I could go back to the previous version. I think it was removed with the update. I didn't check that little box before I clicked update. I feel like the new tools are like trying to balance on a greased beach ball in the middle of the ocean during a storm.
