P: Shake Reduction crashes

LEGEND ,
Dec 09, 2018 Dec 09, 2018

I have two 16gb RAM computers, and on each using Photoshop CC 2019 with the .01 update, when using Shake Reduction in Sharpening, it inevitably seizes up then crashes the program. In addition, when I am asked to file a report, my email address is always reported as wrong when it is the same one Adobe uses to reach me.

We believe we have fixed the issues causing crashing with Camera Shake Reduction. Is anyone still having issues with crashing?

I can prevent the crash by purging the PS memory after each file I shake-reduce and save. (ALT+File->About Photoshop CC purge method)

Still crashes each time in 20.0.4 on High Sierra. Just to add a confirmation.

I have also started using the new Topaz AI Sharpen and on some images it works so much better than Shake Reduction. OK, it runs very slowly but sometime it can really save an image!

My early testing revealed the problem may have gone away with 20.0.4 release. I needed to use it on 12 different images, and nothing happened. (Windows 10, and updated nVidia drivers) I will continue to monitor.

I am using 20.0.4, and it crashes constantly. Reminds me of the ”B.O.” episiode from Seinfeld 🙂

I switched to Topaz Sharpen AI -- it may be slow, but it works better than Shake Reduction and doesn't crash.

I tested Topaz Sharpen a few years back, and felt that because there were so many options, I just over sharpened way too much.

The beauty of Shake Reduction is that it doesn't Sharpen Noise, it Sharpens Edges.

Maybe I should take another look at Topaz, much has changed over the years.

AND I've abandoned Photoshop 2019, and went back to 2015.5 and haven't had a single problem since.

You should really check out Topaz Shapen AI. It is a completely new product, not an updated version of the old Sharpen plugin. Works much better than Shake reduction ever did!

>Maybe I should take another look at Topaz, much has changed over the years.

Topaz Sharpen AI has changed, but I don't see it as a replacement to Shake Reduction, at least to rescue the photos I've used Shake Reduction with. I don't use Shake Reduction as a normal sharpening feature, but specifically for the way you can deal with motion blur and restrict the results to particular areas, as well as the granular control over the results.

It's not an easy, "intuitive" feature to use. There's no AI, just you tweaking the settings and having a lot of patience to get the best results on photos that don't have sharp focus, but are irreplaceable, for whatever reason, to you (or your client).

You won't have very much control at all over Sharpen AI. I think Gigapixel AI is a genuine game-changer. It's worth the price of admission even on my older, slower computer. But while Sharpen AI is a decent, albeit slow, addition to Topaz Studio, imo, it's not special enough after all my testing on many images to say it could replace Shake Reduction. Problems with Shake Reduction need to be fixed, but it is still alone in its specialty.

If you've been using it simply to add some sharpening to a normal photo, well, maybe Sharpen AI will take its place. It does a pretty good job of finding and enhancing detail. I just wouldn't use it as a replacement for Shake Reduction. I'd like to see PS finding a way to make the interface easier to work with, or at least making it run faster on any supported computer.

But there are lots and lots of sharpen features in all the various other image editors, and while any one of them is better than a feature that constantly crashes, they're still not fully interchangeable.

The problem with your analysis, Cristen, is that Shake Reduction doesn't exist, at least in a working environment. Every couple of weeks, looking for a miracle, I try to use it and PS crashes. Every time Adobe sends an update, I try and use Shake Reduction and PS crashes. If you can't use a function in PS then that function doesn't exist, and I won't use one that constantly causes a full product crash. As slow as Topaz Sharpen AI is, it's faster than rebooting PS and then checking the image on which I was working.  A limited function such as Sharpen AI is better than a function you're unwilling to work with at all.

I didn't leave it out of my analysis. I am not arguing with anything being good enough when it's constantly crashing.  I'm not even saying don't use Sharpen AI if you're willing to pay for it, rather than use another sharpening feature you may have already access to. I'm only saying the two are not completely interchangeable according to my tests of Sharpen AI, unless, as I stated, you only do normal sharpening with Shake Reduction. I don't use it for that, as I also stated.

So yeah, go ahead and buy Sharpen AI if you want. If/when Adobe fixes Shake Reduction, you might stick with Sharpen AI, or you might find, as I have, that there are some photos that Shake Reduction helps with better than Sharpen AI.

Though actually, I'd use Gigapixel AI, even if I barely enlarged the image, for the way it finds and sharpens details. I am seriously impressed with that standalone plug-in, and have seen many enlargements  with before and afters from others, and their results are impressive, too. From very small enlargements to 6X larger, Gigapixel AI has done a stunning job. I'm sure it won't be much for every photo, but that's why so many of us have more than one option for what we're trying to do.

As a long time Topaz user I was offered Sharpen AI for free. It's worth the price and more because it works. To whatever degree Shake Reduction figures in the cost of PS it isn't worth it because it does more than not work, it makes you constantly reboot the entire product.  I do have other sharpening tools -- for me, AI is the best -- a long way from perfect, but better.

Well, that's good to know. I also got it for free. But others may not have, so I mentioned buying it as Topaz Studio itself, the basic version, IS free and I wouldn't want others to have any confusion in the matter. And one of the best free image editors out there—again, imo.

Agreed. I have both the paid bundle (bought it when Topaz was just getting started) and Studio (which I don't use much, but like some of the features when I'm looking for something out of the ordinary). I was interested in your comment about Gigapixel as I frequently have to process other people's mobile phone shots.

> I was interested in your comment about Gigapixel >

It's worth a trial at some point when you have the time to put it through a rigorous test—many of us were highly sceptical, but came away converts. It costs too much not to test seriously—although I have to laugh at the notion that ~$100 is too much for a plugin when Nik SEP cost me at least 3X that much all those years ago in those years' dollars.

I'm sure it depends upon the image what it can do—they all do. And I'm sure there's a chance it will make something about the image worse, not better. In fact, I saw that in one rather technically challenged image (being kind about it). But I've been able to use it on pretty much anything I've thrown at it so far. If you start with something way too small, but made with a good camera and lens, you can blow it up an amazing amount. Otherwise, stick to reasonable scaling. You know it can't simulate a Hassleblad photo from an iPhone 5 lens. <g>

I don't use it on every image—not just to sharpen when Detail and Clarity can be all that's needed for most decent images. It takes a bit too long to run on my old laptop for me to sit there for it.

But if you need to pull out detail, that one is going to do it.

Open the Creative Cloud Application. Choose Uninstall for this version. When the CC app says "Install," press on the disclosure triangle and choose an earlier version to install. Since they've decided not to identify the versions as clearly, just count backwards a version or two. That should get you to a version that worked for you.  I can't take a screenshot of it today because I'm currently without a working CC app. I hope this helps you figure it out.

as well here.  three different setups all produce the same result: a MacOS (MacBook pro 15" - latest model), a MS Surface Laptop 2 (15", also latest model) and an HP machine at work.  The shake reduction is so buggy.  Could someone from Adobe acknowledge that this is something that their dev team is looking at?

Hi Jeffrey, I hope my information will help you to get the exact problem.

Most of the time it's happening when I try to change the value faster just like I did with unsharp mask. It's almost 100% even if the file is small like 1500px.

I found the filter works pretty good when I wait a couple of seconds to change values in each field. And delay about 5 seconds before I click on the OK button.

Here's the file I used: https://we.tl/t-bbgKykyRjK

Workaround: First, try to use the PSD and on the top layer. Use the settings I used(attached). try to change the values faster and click ok too. See if the photoshop crashes.

Second: Do the same thing but wait around 5 seconds on completing each step I meant when you update the values. And see if the photoshop crashes.

Let me know if this helps you.
Thank you!
