Issue: Classic Gradient Editor doesn't change the active gradient, instead creates a new Preset

  • Photoshop version:  26.1.0 20241113.r.121 158e617 x64
  • OS: Windows 11 64-bit

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a new document.
  2. Select the Gradient tool, then Classic gradient
  3. Click on the box containg the gradient to open the Gradient editor
  4. Make any changes to the gradient then click OK

Expected result: Active gradient should reflect the changes we just made
Actual result: The new gradient is saved as a preset while active gradient stays unchanged

It started happening after I updated Photoshop to version 26, it worked perfectly until then. I cannot imagine this being anything other than a bug. I included a video showing the bug in action.

I want to use the classic gradient tool, but it is impossible to change the colors. When I click the gradient editor in the top left corner and choose new color values and click ok, then still the old gradient is on. There is no logical or intuitive way to change the colors. I have spent hours on it.

There is another recent thread about this, https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-bugs/p-win-ps-v26-1-classic-gradient-editor-creat...

The Photoshop team is aware of it.

This just started all of a sudden and worked perfectly fine a couple weeks ago last time I drew something. My PS version is 26.1, maybe it updated on it's own since then and something changed?

So how gradients used to work for me is I'd have "Classic Gradient" selected, I'd click the box showing the current colours of my gradient, and a window would pop up letting me change the colours. I'd hit okay and then I'd be using those colours. It didn't save my gradients anywhere.

Now when I hit okay, it saves the colours I set to the bottom of the drop down list, and it DOESN'T change the currently selected gradient to the one I just made. I have to open the list and select it. Technically I can work arround this, but the extra step of having to open the list to select the gradient I just made is annoying, plus I make a lot of gradients for one-off uses, so I really don't want every single one to be saved every time. Is there a way to make it go back to how it was?
