P: (Win) PS v26.1 Classic Gradient Editor creating a new Preset instead of changing the gradient

Issue: Classic Gradient Editor doesn't change the active gradient, instead creates a new Preset

  • Photoshop version:  26.1.0 20241113.r.121 158e617 x64
  • OS: Windows 11 64-bit

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a new document.
  2. Select the Gradient tool, then Classic gradient
  3. Click on the box containg the gradient to open the Gradient editor
  4. Make any changes to the gradient then click OK

Expected result: Active gradient should reflect the changes we just made
Actual result: The new gradient is saved as a preset while active gradient stays unchanged

It started happening after I updated Photoshop to version 26, it worked perfectly until then. I cannot imagine this being anything other than a bug. I included a video showing the bug in action.

In the Gradient Overlay panel, it saves a preset I selected over and over again. I make my normal selection, but it gets duplicate that preset more and more. It happened after 2025 Update. I have attached a screenshot.

I'm using: Macbook Pro M1 Max - Sonoma 14.2.1 (23C71) - 32GB Ram

Photoshop 26.3.0 Release

Everytime i click on a gradient use it, it then duplicates itself in the gradient panel where i got it from. Have i accidentally clicked something or is it a bug? Happens every single time.
The new butoon and the ok button do the same thing

Hi, I have been a Photoshop user for years and haven't had this problem before. When I use the gradient fill, it duplicates the preset. For example, I use foreground-to-transparent a lot, and if I use it ten times, I end up with eleven foreground-to-transparent presets in the menu. This only started with the last update, 26.1.0. Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

Are you using the Gradient Tool or a Gradient Fill Adjustment Layer?

I would try a Photoshop preferences reset:

This happens to me also with both gradient fill and gradient map adjustment layers. I'm using PS 26.2 in Windows. Resetting my Preferences made no difference.

Photoshop 26.1.0

Windows 11

As of version 26 the gradient tool presets have stopped working altogether. clicking any stored preset will not change the gradient settings.

This goes for both classic and new gradients.

Creating new presets doesn't help as they have the same issue.

Everything works fine on my side.

This is still broken (for me) in PS 26.1. Trying to apply a foreground to transparent gradient to a layer mask vignette to mask off one corner, it's doing anything but act in the way it should. This is an essential tool in my workflow and I've got images to edit for a client.

Recently in photoshop ive been adding gradients and gradient maps to my designs. Everytime i click on a gradient use it, it then duplicates itself in the gradient panel where i got it from. Have i accidentally clicked something or is it a bug? Happens every single time.

I'm just on an empty layer, not a mask or anything like that. It just won't change. Tried doing custom gradients and it kept going back to the default selection so I decided to try the presets and it's doing the same thing.

This just started all of a sudden and worked perfectly fine a couple weeks ago last time I drew something. My PS version is 26.1, maybe it updated on it's own since then and something changed?

So how gradients used to work for me is I'd have "Classic Gradient" selected, I'd click the box showing the current colours of my gradient, and a window would pop up letting me change the colours. I'd hit okay and then I'd be using those colours. It didn't save my gradients anywhere.

Now when I hit okay, it saves the colours I set to the bottom of the drop down list, and it DOESN'T change the currently selected gradient to the one I just made. I have to open the list and select it. Technically I can work arround this, but the extra step of having to open the list to select the gradient I just made is annoying, plus I make a lot of gradients for one-off uses, so I really don't want every single one to be saved every time. Is there a way to make it go back to how it was?

oh good. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what combination of words to search to find anybody else talking about it online

I want to use the classic gradient tool, but it is impossible to change the colors. When I click the gradient editor in the top left corner and choose new color values and click ok, then still the old gradient is on. There is no logical or intuitive way to change the colors. I have spent hours on it.
