adding white borders using Canvas Size takes forever! [Mac — Scratch Disks Full Error]

I have photoshop 2023 on an old computer - late 2015. I have been editing and printing photos with good results but have struck an issue. In adding a white border using Canvas Size I have not had a problem until now. Adding each canvas canvas side now takes forever when before it was instant. I have obviously done something wrong but cannot find a way to fix this. Hopefully there is a simple answer. My computer tells me my scratch disks are full but I have 60 GB of
free storage on a 500GB Flash Storage

How wide is that border in pixels? (not cm or inches).

I sent a reply by email which, I have discovered, doesn't work with images.

Again: How many pixels is the border? Or put another way - how big is the resulting image in pixels, not cm or inches?

Thanks for your reply. I never work in pixels - I work in mm eg sides 25mm top 180mm bottom 22mm. I only use this for Xmas cards I make on 210 x 297mm paper. I have obviously done something because the attached was done a few days ago without problems

You may not see the relevance, however, pixels are the native working unit.
Go to Image > Image Size and tell us what the size is in pixels, or if you must use cm or mm, what resolution value in addition to the width and height.
Photoshop isn't page layout or illustration software, white space has an overhead.

Some further detail. The two attached screen shots were taken minutes apart. The first gives me 6.47 GB of free space, the second 191.83 GB of free space? Furthermore I note my mail is downloading messages "4227 of 5959"

Are all your images made for printing? Linear document dimensions are meaningless unless you are printing.
Your screent shots didn't tell us anything, other than I think you might live in New Zealand. We need to see full resolution screen shots of the entire workspace with layers panels visible and rulers turned on. You also need to answer questions put to you if you expect useful help with your issue.
Goodness knows what's going on with those emails, but I can't think of any way it could be anything to do with Photoshop.
So:
What is the image size in pixels?
How big were the borders in pixels?
While things have slowed to a crawl, have a look at the root directory of the designated Scratch drive, and tell us the total size of the Photoshop Temp files?
Thanks.

Thank you Trevor. My apologies but I've always had difficulty with technical aspects . The Community has been very helpful over the years. I'm 79 years of age and the mind is fading. I have always enjoyed the physical aspect of taking photographs and only recently started printing in earnest. I think I'll just give Xmas cards a miss. And again thank you and others for your help. Peter
P.S. There's the distinct possibility that I may have left it too late for earnest printing!

178,72 GB is (a bit) above the recommended available space but it is apparently not enough for what you are doing.
Try using a secondary, tertiary, …

That may not be enough free space.

Thank you Bob. I have been deleting stuff in order to increase space, I'll see if more can be deleted

I didn't see that. My wife was down to 40Gb on a 500Gb Windows 10 boot drive, and the system was super slow. This is my old system and has several drives including a decent 4Gb HDD I added when I gave her the system. When I became aware it was not working well I relocated some of the folders, and moved 250Gb of archive type files to the HDD and she says the system is MUCH faster.
I know very little about Mac systems, but I image it has an equivalent of Windows pagefile.sys. A quick Google tells me that Mac systems have a Swap File rather than a Page File, but like Windows, its size will be fluid, and be proportional to physical RAM. This Apple.com forum post has information on locating the file, so see if you can find it and how big it is.

Just seen this Trevor. All sounds very technical to me. Let me have a look at your suggested forum post....
