Applying ramp to a flat color object - Photoshop

If I have a rectangle that is already painted with a flat color can I apply a ramp to it so it would look like a 3-dimensional object that has a light source on it?

No problem, this forum has lots of verious expertise to help you but I suggest posting this image of yours so we can see what it looks like

 

P.s, Blender is very up to date and a great tool for 3D

I'm going to assume you want help from me

Hardware;

3D is really a Windows only workflow... if all you have is a tired 10 year old Mac then imo you are in for a battle to get any 3D work done

Make the model;

I can make almost anything in Photoshop but I've been doing this a while and it tends to be worth your while to have a look around for models before jumping in... in this example I just grabbed the model from Adobe Dimension and export as Obj

this gives you an [almost] wavefront front Obj that Photoshop can open

 

once in Photoshop you have full control over every part of the scene; i.e, lights, colours, shadows and camera angles... does this vid help?

Thanks but I was looking to enhance a 2D photo. I do, however, use Blender if I want to do any 3D work.

All sorts of ways to do this. One is to create a curves or levels adjustment layer and darken the image. Then use the gradient tool to adjust the mask to make it look like it's getting darker at the bottom.

    This seems to be exactly what I want although I could use more detail on how to do that. 🙂

    The screen shot pretty much shows it all. Create a curves adjustment layer and drag down the highlight end of the curves to tone down any highlights and generally darken the image

     Clip it to your layer, by holding the alt/opt key while clicking between the two layers in the layer panel. Then use the gradient tool to make the "ramp" to have the curve adjustment layer apply to only part of the layer.

      Hi there,

      You can create a new rectangle then go to Edit > Transform > Skew and change the direction of the rectangle from any corner to make it look like a ramp and then put it on the first rectangle.
