Batch Automate & Rename not working

I have many files that I would like to batch resize and just to make sure that I know which ones are actually the correct new files, I'd like to add an extension to the new file name.

For example, right now the files in one folder are already called: 2-a, 2-b, 2-c, and I would like them to be called Converted-2-a, Converted-2-b, Converted-2c., so keep original 'document name' and add 'Converted-' in front of it.

I was able to set up the automation task, and am now stuck on the renaming, no matter what I select, the new files I get always have the identical name to the original images (without saying 'Converted-' at the beginning). I am using Photoshop 2020 and here is the batch window I am looking at:

batchrename.png

To me, the above looked like what I want to accomplish, when I hit on save, I get the automation job done, files are created, but they have the same name as the original file name. Just to make sure I didn't make a thinking mistake I tried running a very simple rename like the following:

batchrename2.png

And same thing, the new files get created, no error message whatsoever, but the file name remains the original file name no matter what I try.

I'm a bit tired after trying out several options for hours to make this work and feel like I must be making a very basic mistake, could anyone help me out please? Thanks in advance!

Download ZIP file ps-scripts - Browse /Image Processor Pro/v3_2 betas at SourceForge.net (third from the top, just below ZXP package) then extract it. Open folder and look for installation.pdf. Open instructions and follow steps. Just tested, everything works fine.

@Stephen Marsh

Thanks, so you did exactly what I did above and it gives you the result 'Converted-filename'? Bummer, thanks for trying!

Have you tried using Image Processor Pro which offers to add suffix and prefix to the file name in batch process https://youtu.be/nDikzV3TLFw?si=nh1Yf246kVtcJFOH&t=442

Thank you for suggesting this, I tried finding the file to install this, and could only find this link. After downloading the .zxp file as you suggest in your video I tried extracting it with a ZIP extractor and nothing happened. I tried to go on your website designeasy.co and it says server can't be reached so I am not sure how to do this. I also noticed that this .zxp file is for Photoshop CC2015 but I am using the 2020 version, so it seems like this won't be compatible with my version. If you have any thoughts on this, please let me know. Thank you.

Thank you Bojan, that was very kind of you to share. I was able to install the script file manually and it works for Photoshop 2020 (in case someone else reads this any needs to know in the future). It did exactly what I described above, and even let me add a watermark workflow to it.

If you don't mind, I have three small follow-up questions regarding the image processor pro window (I will be converting thousands of pictures, so I'm scared I'm doing it the wrong way):

1. The popup window seems to remember all I did in a previous run, but it doesn't remember that I only care about the first jpg tab. Although I unchecked 'save' from set3 tab and set2 tab, the first view is always the set3 tab. Is there a way so it opens and is directly the photoshop (.jpg) tab, it would save one click...

set3set2.png

2. Output profile (I selected save for web and the purpose of this is to reduce file size, resize all pictures to a specific width (height varies), and add a watermark (through action that I set up separately). Which of these options would be the best?

3. Since I am adding the watermark through an action and want a small file size in the end, is there a preferred method to select before/ after resize, or does it not matter?

Great work on your website, I looked at it and tried to find an answer to these questions but couldn't. I thought I'd see if you have any additional wisdom to share before I run it all, thanks a lot for your help, it saved me tons of time!

My apologies Bojan, I have been playing with this helpful Image Processor Pro but think I might have found a glitch unless I got the settings wrong? I have used Image Processor Pro to (1) resize files (2) rename files (as described earlier), (3) add watermark (through action run through Image Processor Pro, and (4) save for web. Only the watermark is an action, the other three elements are all directly applied through Image Processor Pro.

After doing a couple of batches I noticed that the resizing doesn't seem to work. I have some files that have a width of 750px and others that are much wider than that, many different widths and heights. My aim was to have them all be a width of 750px regardless of what their original width was (and the height should be proportional to that, so the dimension for height would always be different depending on the original height). However, I noticed that the width would only become 750px if the original width happens to be 1000px. If, for example, an image had the original width of 1200px it would become 640px although I selected 750px for width here, and I wonder why:

Do you happen to know if I have done something wrong in the setup? Or will I have to add an action so that all images regardless of their original width become 1000px wide first through canvas size, and then use Image Processor Pro to make them 750px? Thank you and sorry to bother again, I feel like I'm missing something very obvious here.

It seems you might not fully understand what the W and H numbers mean when ‘Resize to Fit’ is turned on.

If you choose 750 for width and 800 for height then new, resized image must fit into both dimensions, one of the sides can be smaller but not bigger then typed dimensions.

Try it yourself: first, open a 6000x4000 image. Then, use ‘Image Size’ to fit the width into 750px. After that, flip the image and try to fit the height into 800px.

One alternative is to use Adobe Bridge for renaming the files before or after the Photoshop batch operation, depending on your case.  Simply open the image folder in Adobe Bridge, select all photos, click with the right-hand mouse button, select Batch Rename, and set your options.
