Blank Gray Screen in Photoshop 22.4.2 on Windows 10

Attached is the screen I get upon opening Photoshop directly from the desktop. (latest version 22.4.2).  It opens fine with an image via Bridge.  The dialog box is what I get trying to creat a new image via File/New, opening an existing image via File/Open works.  When I close any image, I am back to the blank gray screen.  Windows 10, I've unchecked & rechecked the Graphics Processor tab in Preferences/Performance to no avail.
