Bug - Clipboard problem - Sometimes can't Paste images into existing canvas

Hello, sometimes I get a weird bug where I can't Paste a copied image into an active canvas in photoshop. To fix the problem I have to jump through some specific hoops (hoping this is helpful to you guys for fixing the bug, too)

The problem:
Sometimes when I Right click (in my browser for example) > Copy image > Paste into my acvtive photoshop canvas > The previous/wrong/cached file from the clipboard is pasted in. No matter if i use Ctrl+V or Edit > Paste, same result.

The solution:
I have to goto File > New (note this is actually the wrong canvas size, it should be the copied file dimensions like it normally is) > Create > Paste now works > Close this new file > Paste again in my canvas and NOW it does work.

It's bizarre. Note this doesn't always happen. Maybe 50% of the time only.

I'm on windows 10, and I keep my photoshop up to date (subscription)

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks

I started to notice my snipping tool screenshots were not pasting, even opening a new document and trying to paste.

However, I did stumble accross tabbing out and back in (I'd make chrome my active window, then back to PS) seemed to 'refresh' the PS clipboard and I was pasting the most recent image saved to the clipboard.  This worked really well for me - annoying yes, but got me through without too much frustration.

Update - just pressing Windows key then back to PS works too.

I have had this issue on multiple versions of Photoshop Elements, and one of the older Photoshops.
I also installed them on 4 different computers, 2 fresh, and 2 I had used for a while.
From experimenting its definitely correlated to picture size mostly, and then Chrome happens the most, followed by firefox. I also noticed a lag after right click copy, where if i right click the same picture i cant right click for a few seconds.

And like what OP says, I can instantly paste in MS Paint, but not in Photoshop. Ill also say i cant open a new file with the clipboard.

This issue still prevails, especially after the most recent update....has anyone come accross a work around or are aware of any fix from Adobe?

Hello, I don't know if you have figured out a solution since. I had the same issue since more than a year now, and reading some comments made me realise that the cliboard history IS the solution.

When pasting from ctrl+V is not working, that's because your PS project might keep the last thing copied from PS itself (If you copied nothing from PS, pasting will do nothing as it has nothing to paste). At least that's what it does for me. To resolve that I had to do something else on PS and then paste again (so yes, probably cache issue), sometimes I had to do it 2 or 3 times.

Now, I have activated my clipboard history, I just have to do win+V to open clipboard history and click on the image I actually want to paste.

So instead of doing ctrl+V, I do win+V and click on the image, problem resolved. I hope it helps !

Great workaround for this! Thank you for sharing!

I know this is an old post but I have recently started seeing this problem. As the original post discussed - WIN 10 - I am using WIN 11. The original post-er indicated the he thought this was a photoshop problem. This is in essence a PS problem, but it isnt PS causing the problem. PS just happens to be the victim of it and it and windows picks PS to be its path. It didn’t make sense to me how this occurred/started. Working fine, then all of the sudden NOT WORKING fine. This issue, while it picks PS to be its outlet, it is definitely a windows problem. I do not know the tech details behind it, but it is windows and or the snipping tool app in windows. After trying everything I uninstalled the snipping tool, then reinstalled. It now is working. If it occurs again its something Microsoft + Adobe will have to find a sollution to repair.  dw

I have had this problem on multiple computers and multiple versions of PS for years. Wierd thing is different fixes work different times. Nothing consistant and it just happens in PhotoShop. I can paste an image into AI, Corel, and Windows, but when I try in PS, it chooses the last successful image that was pasted, no matter it's original source.

Years go by, this stupid bug still exists. Got introduced around ~2020 version. Still pastes previous copied image.

I can confirm that this bug is still a thing. I have to copy images from the browser to another app like Pure Ref and then paste into Photoshop.

I am having the same issue- had to install an older version of ps as the new one was giving me a bug with the '3D' functions (canvas rotate, etc). So I'm currently using 23.2.1- I had been having this issue a year or so ago and then it cleared up. Using this older version has had me encountering the issue again.

Just jumping in here to see if there's any update on this. I'm have the same problem, exactly as OP describes it.

1) When working in a Photoshop file, copy & pasting one image from Chrome works as intended.

2) Copying a 2nd image from Chrome will paste correctly into any other program, but if I try to paste that 2nd image into Photoshop, it continues to paste the 1st image.

3) Opening a new Photoshop document somehow fixes the issue, allowing me to paste the 2nd image into Photoshop.

4) Trying to copy & paste a 3rd image from Chrome resets us to step 2, where the prior image is the only one that pastes into Photoshop.

My Windows Clipboard History is turned off and I have cleared the clipboard data in Windows, with no results.

Just so photoshop engineers know, this IS a different bug than the incorrect canvas size from clipboard. To clarify, this particular thread is about "incorrect pasted document"

Granted, it may be related in some way to the clipboard size bug, because the way I solve the "incorrect pasting" bug with create new document > paste (now working) > actually has the incorrect clipboard size when creating new document - so really, the 'incorrect clipboard size' bug was happening to me long before it was an issue that affected everyone.

Have you found a version without this bug?

The issue seems to be resolved for a while

I have resolved my issue - which was the same I think,

My 'new' file was always the same dimmensions - not that of the clipboard.

The issue was in 'templates' tab of the new document dialogue. I had somehow created a 'new documnent' template size that would over-ride the clipboard size.

I deleted it, and that's that - back to normal.

Just wanted to give this thread a nudge, and mention that I still suffer my the clipboard issue on a daily basis.

And just to clarify, the MAIN problem from this thread is the fact that:

-When I right click > copy image from a browser > Photoshop fails to update the clipboard and pastes the previous image. This only happens sometimes, and I have no idea why.

-Sometimes [when its happening] if I do it extra slow in browser, it will update and work.

-However, EVERY TIME it's happening > I can goto file > New > Paste > and it pastes flawlesslessly [except the canvas auto size is wrong, which btw was happening before the big clipboard bug thread currently happening] > only then can I go back to my main canvas and paste works.

TLDR:
In photoshop, Paste sometimes doesnt work in my active document (it pastes previous clipboard image)
But it works if i goto File > New > Paste now works > then going back to the original doc Paste now magically works here too (as it should)

I had the same issue, but after reading several topics about the issue I turned multiple clipboards in windows on and off again and that did seem to do the trick. At least for now.
But this is still an issue that should be addressed instead of turning off basic OS functionality.

Re: The clipboard/paste issue, it's only happened once since the rollback yesterday and video driver update. Maybe an improvement? I will never know if it was the video card driver or photoshop though, because i did them at the same time. I can tell though, photoshop is performing WAY better (faster).

The one thing that makes me think its 100% photoshop and not a PC issue (when it does happen) is how Paste actually "works" properly if i goto New > File > Paste (my workaround), but doesnt work in an active document im working on. It will Paste every time properly in any other program too. This all leads me back to it being a photoshop performance/processing/lag issue somehow.

Re: the line tool, I see thank you. That's what I suspected, and very inconvenient to go through an additional menu. I personally hate "shape strokes" to begin with, and avoid them at all costs, opting for the FX stroke instead. Especially because you can apply a stroke to multiple layers with effects (copy paste layer styles), but can't do that with the shape stroke. That's a big drawback, and I see the line tool is basically built around shape strokes entirely. But I think the lacking ability to hit Ctrl + click a "layer thumbnail" to create a selection (from the line layer) is the biggest let down.

My workaround for the line tool currently is to just pull out the square shape > click > define 1px width and 100px height and go from there. But I miss the ability to create a line on a diagonal (can't with this workaround)

This default stroke on the shapes i make is pretty annoying though (however seems to be fixed, or should i say unbroken, in this earlier 22.0 version)
