Can't disable invisible grid snapping with move tool

Since some recent update, the move tool snaps to some invisble grid and it drives me nuts.

The grid is screen related and not zoom related.

Snap to grid is disabled!

Disabling all snapping or holding down control circumvents this behavoir but then nothing snaps...

Is this some sort of new "feature" ?

No, it sounds totally expected and has worked this way for many versions, if my guess is right…

My guess is that this is because at least one option is enabled on the View > Snap To submenu.

If you see the dragged layer snapping to other objects, View > Snap To > Layers is probably enabled. That’s defined as the edge of the bounding box of each layer’s non-transparent pixels, that is how each layer determines where to snap. If your document has a lot of layers, any layer you drag is going to snap all over the place, as you drag that layer’s edges past multiple layer edges.

If you see it snapping to the canvas edge, View > Snap To > Document Bounds is probably enabled.

Note that there are five different Snap To options (including Grid), so you can enable only the ones you want.

Holding down the Control key is the standard shortcut for temporarily overriding Snap To options that are on.

If you want to shut them off permanently, choose View > Snap to disable its check mark.

If you disable View > Snap, now holding down the Control key does the opposite: It temporarily overrides the Snap To options opposite to how you set them.

So just set up the Snap To options the way you like it, and hold down the Control key when you temporarily need it to work the opposite way.

Even though your explanation does not reflect the behavior, disabling layer snapping did actually solve the problem (other than that it doesn't snap to layers now...).

However, if I make a blank document and duplicate the background layer (which is the only layer), when I move the duplicate it snaps to an invisible grid relative to the screen and not the image size. So this has nothing to do with snapping to layers and can only be discribed as a bug. (I hope Adobe is reading along...)

If it’s a bug with steps that anyone can reproduce, it can be reported in the Bugs section of this community, where Adobe makes sure they can confirm it. If it gets traction (gets upvotes and user comments) or is a serious problem like a crasher, in the Bugs section Adobe can assign a bug status to it such as Investigating or Started (you can see the Status of many reports there), and if resolved (Status: Fixed), that is often documented in the Fixed Issues section of each version’s public release notes with a link back to the bug report.
