How can I change the opacity of selected text within an area text box?

Photoshop does not have the facility to assign a different Alpha to specific characters, so the closest is to add a layer mask

It's not ideal, as the mask would need to be remade if the text is edited, but its the closest I can think of.

Thanks... that's what I already do now, but still hoping that Adobe can put this into their noggins for a future update.
