Color setting gone rogue in Photoshop 2025

Community Beginner ,
Oct 16, 2024 Oct 16, 2024

Right after upgrading (automatically) to Photoshop 2025, white has turned into a  dizzy blue and colors in the app are completely wrong. Saving works and the end file is correct. But it's impossible to work in this workspace.

Really appreciate any support for fixing this.

The monitor profile should be used in one place, and one place only. That is in the operating system's colour settings. Applications will use the monitor profile from there provided it has been installed correctly.
As D Fosse explained earlier, using the monitor profile as a setting for the document in Photoshop merely turns colour management off. It may look ' the same' on your system but will look incorrect on others.

It's either the GPU or a corrupt/defective monitor profile. It has nothing to do with color settings, don't touch anything there.

Please post the full Help > System Info from Photoshop.

Does it display correctly if you disable the graphics processor in preferences?

When I open any RGB file (jpg, png, tiff, psd) the box is entirely black. I can still open CMYK colourspace files just fine, and if I convert the black RGB files to CMYK they display. Also if I change the 8 or 16 bit RGB files to 32 bit they display...even though they were 8 bit previously. When I disable the graphics processor in pteferences, i an see the files again. What gives?? I've attached PS system info.

@Bing Cadaver

You probably shouldn't post this in a thread with a "color settings" headline - this doesn't have anything to do with color settings.

<EDIT>

Apparently this is a known PS bug on Mac:

Thanks for the feedback. I'll post the thread there. But for your info, there's no difference when I disable the graphics processor.

Turn off/disable HDR. Photoshop doesn't support it (yet). 32 bit floating point HDR in Photoshop is something else.

Also, I'm not too confident of the Dell monitor profile listed here. Dell profiles are notoriously defective in various ways. Ideally you should use a calibrator to make a custom profile, but in the meantime try a standard profile. Since this is apparently a P3-type panel, try the "Image P3"-profile that Photoshop installs, or if you see a "Display P3" profile that should be the same thing.

ACR and Lightroom Classic both do support HDR display.

I wasn't able to find an HDR option in Photoshop settings. It wasn't available in the Technology previews setting (as described in the help section).

Also, I am baffled by the fact that, aside from slowness, I had absolutely zero issues with Photoshop before the upgrade to the 2025 version.

PS: While playing around in the settings, just before sending this, I found the fix. I selected the monitor profile in the color settings, instead of the default Photoshop setting. All is back to normal now. Phew!

Thanks for pointing me into the right direction.

After fixing the color in the app, the saving is wrong. The background color is supposed to be white here. The result however is weird. See the image attached.wrong-export.jpg

It looks like you've gone to some trouble about this, so I'm guessing I'm wrong. However, just in case, I had a similar issue and fixed it by going View -> Proof Setup -> Monitor RGB

@Daniel32456360yytf

No, that doesn't fix anything. Proof to Monitor RGB disables the whole display color management chain. So you're just sweeping the real problem under the carpet. The monitor profile is still defect/wrong/corrupt.

This dumbs down Photoshop to the level of any image viewer without color management support.

The whole purpose of the monitor profile is to correct for the errors and inaccuracies of your monitor, so that the image displays correctly. But the profile has to be healthy and map your monitor accurately. If it doesn't, Photoshop cannot display correctly.

Yeah, I kinda figured I was off the mark. Having trouble with the Adobe Community interface, or I'd have edited my response. I was having a similar issue, which seemed to be addressed as I mentioned. A bit later I realized that I needed to disable Windows HDR. Hadn't been an issue in the previous build. There are still some things that seem a bit off since downloading the newest build last night, but I haven't had time to really figure out what I'm talking about. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

My current setup is Working CMYK, and I didn't change anything in that setting.

However, there was a different setting linked to monitor RGB, which I can't remember 😞 But that setting and the initial change in the monitor profile got my PS to a working status. No more color differences on open or save.

Just to be clear - this whole thread is about a defective monitor profile. Fixing the profile fixes the problem.

Proofing doesn't affect the profile - but if you proof to Monitor RGB it bypasses the monitor profile. So it can be used as a troubleshooting indicator, simply as a diagnostic. But it has no bearing on the problem itself.

@D Fosse I would agree in principle if I had a new monitor and a newly installed PS instance. It was not the case. However, some changes in the setup (detailed above) fixed the issues I had after the upgrade to PS 2025. The conclusion is that the problem no longer exists. If someone else has this exact issue with another upgrade they can try the steps and recommendations from this thread.

Thanks a lot for helping and giving feedback!

@THEGO You said 'I selected the monitor profile in the color settings, instead of the default Photoshop setting. All is back to normal now'

It isn't fixed. Taking that action means that Colour management is now defeated in Photoshop. Soyour document may look OK on your system, it will look incorrect on others.

The symptoms you show point toward a faulty monitor profile, which is set in the operating system but you can check the following:

a. Make sure Edit >Settings > Enable OpenColorIO features is unchecked

b. Make sure your document profile for new documents is set to a Document Colour Space. Edit > Colour Settings > RGB  set to sRGB or Adobe RGB
c. Outside of Photoshop, type Color management into the Windows search bar. In devices, check your monitor is selected. Then look at the ICC profile. As a temporary measure change that to sRGB (or Adobe RGB if you have a wide gamut monitor). Next, restart Photoshop. If that improves the display, then it proves your monitor profile was faulty and you need to replace it with a profile that describes your actual monitor (preferably one made with a hardware device).

Hi, @davescm

a. It was unchecked already

b. It was Monitor RGB. Switched to Adobe RGB.

c. My ICC profile is set (automatically, I think) to my monitor Alienware.

After restarting Photoshop I opened a document from my recent list and got a warning about the embedded profile. I discarded the message and exported a PNG file. Everything looks ok.

THEGO_0-1730127464943.png

Thanks for the feedback. I will keep the current setup as it seems to be a correct or stable one.

To avoid that message, in colour settings ensure that colour management policies are set to 'Preserve Embedded Profiles' for RGB, CMKY and Gray.

You can then uncheck Profile Mismatches 'Ask when opening' and 'ask when pasting'. I would leave Missing profiles set to 'Ask when opening'

This thread includes a fix that 100% worked for me. My white balance was janked up to hell, but then disappeared after this simple fix (Windows 11). Scroll down to the post by J543. Here's the summary:

Shut down Photoshop -> Locate your Photoshop EXE file -> right-click -> Properties -> Compatability tab -> check the box "Use legacy display ICC color management" -> Apply -> OK -> Restart Photoshop.

  1. After upgrading to Photoshop 2025, the workspace colors went haywire—white turned into a dizzy blue, making it hard to work, though saved files are fine. This issue could be especially frustrating for medical site design, where color accuracy is key for clarity and professionalism.     ,            ,,,

This sounds like a HDR setting somewhere that should be turned off.
