complicated masking issue

I couldn't think of how to explain this problem I'm having so sorry for the imprecise title.  Here it is:  In the screen shot attached to this post, the image on the left is the background layer.  The artowrk resting on the mantle had lots of glare so I brought it in as a new layer (right image).  However, as can be seen the bottom of the art work is overlapping the mantle.  I want the mantle to show through the upper layer and it appear as if the art work is resting on the mantle as it does in the original background layer.  So I need to make a selection of the mantle and have it show through the layer that is on top of it.   How do I do that?  Thanks.

Much better. I looks like you don't really have anything showing for the base of the mantel. The full image, which I'm assuming is the smart object layer (layer 0) has a small mask, so not much is showing there. The other part of the mantel that I can pick out is layer 7, but that just looks like the top part. I really don't see a bottom part. Maybe layer 0 needs to be duplicated and placed at the very bottom.

Yup, that did it.  I duped the bakground layer, rasterized it, got rid of the mask, and brought it to the bottom of the stack, and now everything is perfect.  Thank you!!!

Umm, now I don't see the icon either. Maybe do a screen shot of just the layer panel and enlarge it, then try an post it. Change the properties in the layer panel to large icons, so they can be seen better.

Thanks, Chuck.  How's this?

It's very difficult to see what is going on due to the way this forum reduces image size. Can you repost the image and use the attach file icon rather than the image icon?

I don't see an "attach file" icon.  Only "Insert/Edit code sample," 'Insert Photos," "Insert Video" and "Insert/edit link."

I would use the pen tool to then make either a vector mask or a selection. Either one of those types of masks can then be feathered to make the mask more realistic.

Thank you.  On the background layer, I had made some selections with adjustments layers.  I made a selection of the mantel and added a mask; then I moved the artwork layer to the bottom of the stack, and now the art work is resting on the mantle correctly.  But the areas that I had not made selections of in the background layer are now canvas, and hidden.  Why did that happen and can I get them to show?  Thanks.

I meant to attach an image of what I was talking about.

It is all about layer mask. The artwork is on a layer. The mental holder is on another layer. Select the holder with any selection tool and create  layer mak by clicking on the layer mask symbol at the bottom. You can use Brushes  or the gradient tool to reveal or conceal the layer below.
