CS3 extended. Updating camera raw to 4.6 does not work

I reinstalled after computer failure.
I now cannot read my more recent .DNG files. I presume this is because camera raw is v 4.0 as installed.

I got a new copy of version 4.6 (camera raw.8bi) and replaced it in

c:>program file > Common Files > adobe > Plug-ins > CS3 > File Formats

iirc this worked in the past but I still see v4.0 in photoshop- help- about plugin  - camera raw
A reinstall made no difference.

any ideas?

Is your windows 32 or 64 bit?

If it's a 64 bit version look in C:\Program files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plugi-Ins>CS3\File Formats

Also look in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\File Formats

or

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\File Formats

I do not have extended. CS3 I believe only has a 32bit version that is the only version that the installer installed on my windows 10  workstation. Here is where CS3 and ACR 4.6 are installed on my system.

CS3 was 32 bit only.

Also, the CS3 activation servers have been taken offline and decomissioned, so it should not be possible to reinstall now. CS3 is officially dead after 12 years.

activation didnt seem to be a problem. (In the end I decided to goto the latest version anyway with some new plugins). It was getting a bit old. But if I had realized I was putting the file in the 64 bit location I think it would have still worked again. There was am option to "never register" and then it just worked in all aspects except the bit I messed up reinstalling.
Thanks for the advice, all.
