Question

Enable Crop Shield option is greyed out in Photoshop.

Enable Crop Shield option is greyed out in Photoshop. The tool is accessible only when you restart the software and keep Enable Crop Shield option checked on. If you forget to do so after you close the image and reopen new one it will be greyed out. Previous versions of Photoshop were not doing that and also there was a shortcut assigned so you could easily see how the image would look cropped and then back what is being cropped. I don't understand how such a basic function stopped working and also how come only one person complained about it in the discussion forum in 2022.... I wish it will be fixed in new version.

Yes - let see if I follow to confirm.
Original (starting with Crop Shield on):

I turned off the Enable Crop Shield with the document open.

Close the document.

I went into my workspace and can still activate:

and in another document I can still Enable:

I did some research and found other posts similar to this with the team acknowledging a bug, but it was an earlier version not the latest.

Thank you, yes its working only like that. I have been using Photoshop since 2004 and cropping is first thing I do and it was always working, also it had a shortcut to toggle it. Now for while its like this, I thought its a bug in my system....

Thank you. No it doesn't activate it, only way to activate is to reopen Photoshop or Reset Tool, which activates it but its still greyed out. And yours works even if you uncheck it and load new image?

Yes i see it now on both photoshop 2023 and 2022.

When it's greyed out try resetting the Crop Tool (right click on the Crop Tool icon at the far left of the tool options bar), though it will now be checked it's still greyed out, so i found if you cycle the open documents it's not greyed out any longer.

Try this - close the document (should go back to home screen), then go to Window>Workspace and choose your workspace to show PS without a document open. Choose the crop tool - can you activate it then? Might save you from having to quit to address.

Thank you! Preferences were wiped also Photoshop was restored, I have done it with Adobe technician. I am curious when you uncheck Eneble Crop Shield and then you open the image it doesn't become greyed out? Mine also works when I newly open Photoshop and keep it checked, the problem is when I am cropping images I like to toggle it to see how much I am cropping and if I forget to have it checked, close the image(not Photoshop) open another image then its greyed out...

For me here on a 2012 MacBook Pro running Photoshop 2023 (ps ver 24.7) on macOS Monterey 12.6.9

i see the Crop Shield settings active with a document open or not and Photoshop 2023>Preferences>Performance>Use Graphics Processor on or off.

I suggest doing a manual reset of the Photoshop preferences as described here.

The photoshop preferences are not necessarily erased when doing a reinstall.

I don't, Adobe technician wiped my Creative Suite and reinstalled it, so I have the latest version of Photoshop only.

It behaves the same if I create blank sheet. I have to shut down and reopen photoshop to be able to access it. And then keep it checked. Interesting it works with yours - you can uncheck the Eneble Crop Shield and close the image (not Photoshop) reopen the image and its still possible to check it without being greyed out? My wifes computer is also on Monterey, but its weird it would be the MacOS
