Help! Photoshop CS6 hangs when using brush, clone, healing brush tools etc on Mac

I am having a big problem when using the new CS6 on my Mac (os x 10.7.4). When switching to a new tool, like a brush, or clone stamp, or healing brush etc, Photoshop hangs for about 20 seconds before resuming. It's not 3rd party plug-ins, because I get the same behaviour when I run using the shift key and third party plug-ins are disabled. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens frequently. I've heard that others have had similar problems... are there any solutions - is it a known bug?

Given that, that the sample shows an Nvidia graphics cards that pretty much disproves the theory that it has any to do with an ATI graphics card.

Try install the following plug-ins:

• DisableDragBoundingBox.plugin

• DisableScratchCompress.plugin

• DisableVMBuffering.plugin

These plugins solve the hangup and delay issues.

Try! Only need to copy these plugins in your Photoshop Plugins Folder.

If it not solve your problem, simply remove it.

I am using an intuos 5 on a mac, mountain lion. Something that i have noticed that helps photoshop jump out of its stooper is as followed, I will be tring to make a selection with the pen input and it freezes, i put down the pen and grab my wacom mouse and click in the empty portion of the swatches panel and it seems to knock it out of its stooper. when i do that it pops up asking me to create a new swatch i just hit cancel and continue with my work. seems to help alot with me. I have noticed that i need to do this as soon as i notice it freezing up. hope this helps other people.

Tried that and it worked. But the next time it froze it did not work. Nothing I have tried changes this buggy PSCS6. Between this and causing the icon corruption I pretty much had it with trying to use PSCS6 for anything productive. PSCS5 runs so much better on exactly the same machine with exactly same configuration of third party plugins. Too bad Adobe can't just fix PSCS6 to run like PSCS5. What are they going to do, try to sell us PSCS7 as the fix and screw something else up so we can buy the fix in PSCS8?

Even simple stuff like mouse clicking on the Marquee Tool requires two clicks on the image in order for it to work. In PSCS5 you click on the tool and then it works right way without having to click on the image a second time.

PSCS6 was originally loaded on a clean install of 10.8.

I seem to run into this problem only when running the Right Zoom app. I added PhotoShop to my list of exceptions in that app and the problem went away.

I've been running into this on and off, and I've been able to recover from a seemingly indefinite hang (threatening a force quit). Let me lay out what I'm using and how I work:

1) I'm on OSX Mountain Lion, running Photoshop CS6 (12-Core MacPro).

2) I'm using a Bamboo Wacom, with the stylus button's lower lever set to middle-mouse-click (I have the upper part of the lever set to right-click).

3) When I'm using the brush tool, if I accidently hit the lower part of the lever (the part closest to the nib), registering a middle-mouse-click, Photoshop immediately hangs, seems completely unresponsive, twirling "processing" icon, and my Activity Monitor shows PS is maxing out one of my cores at 100%.

4) I've let it try to resolve itself for letting it just spin for minutes and minutes; switching to other apps then back; hitting all manners of command-period, escape, etc. All to no avail.

5) Now, this JUST happened so I left it spinning again, and googled to arrive to this thread. I saw a post mention switching to the mouse, and sure enough, I did so, and bingo—everything came alive and all the previous clicks and keystrokes I attempted while hung executed all in rapid sucession, and resumed using my tablet again.

Ahh, relief, but still, I'm unsure this is a solid maneuver to recover from a hang. Time will tell...

ETA: I attempted to reproduce the hang by running through the steps and it seemed the more History I filled up, the more sensitive PS was to hang due to a middle-mouse-click on my stylus. Grabbing the mouse and wiggling it a bit seems to imediately recover Photoshop for me. Weird.

I feel like we're starting to get a better understanding of the issue, but I need everyone's help getting me a very important data point: can you get CS6 to hang if there aren't any other applications running on your system at the same time as PS CS6?

Adam, you mean absolutely everything? Close Bridge as well? We're not going to get much work done but I will try to give it a shot when I'm back in the studio on Tuesday.

On another note - the suggestion from another user to click out of photoshop, then back, then back out and back to PS seems to give me back control. Annoying, but it works (so far).

I notice that nobody has posted their System info from Help > system Info inside Photoshop -- That can really help in obtaining information that might be easily discovered by looking through the sysinfo data.

So if you are still seeing this trouble and looking for help via the forums, that is a great place to start --- How about getting a few System Info's to this thread?

Thanks for the system info -- All looks pretty good from my perspective at least from Photoshop's end -- Not sure why you're seeing the slowdowns your'e seeing.

I use an Intuos 4 on my 10.7.4 Imac with 12 gigs of ram here, AMD Radeon HD 6750M, an i5 and I don't experience the hangs you're describing.

Have you tried a different admin user? Do you see the same hangs there?

What about an uninstall/reinstall of Photoshop? This isn't the most fun step, but it is pretty worthwhile for troubleshooting.

My Wacom tablet utility shows I'm using v6.2.0w4

Make a clean user on your computer and run Photoshop to see if it still hangs. If it doesn't hang anymore it might mean that Photoshop is fighting for resources that your computer is giving out to other processes on your usual user.Thanks for the information and success. http://www.kabbanet.ro

I'm seeing the same issue. Mac OS 10.7.4, Mac Pro 2010 8-core with 32gb ram. NOTE that it seems it is not photoshop itself that becomes unresponsive, it appears to be only the document window (photoshop still lets me open the file menu, for instance). It becomes unresponsive when a tool is selected, after which I can't do anything with a document, or any of the pallets. I am using a Wacom Intuos 4; updated my drivers yesterday, and the freezing still happens.

I'm going to try and watch activity monitor for the rest of the day and see if anything jumps out at me. But honestly, with the specs on this machine, if photoshop is using up all resources it's a software issue. If this machine can't run PS effectively without constant unresponsiveness, then I might as well give up now.

Same sort of problem here on my Mac Pro. The Intuos 4 pen hangs when using clone/heal type tools or if I'm using the space bar and pen to move the canvas. It hangs when I make a stroke but not when I select the tool. Typically, I make a stroke on the image and the pen will "not let go" - leaving a trail if the pen moves until it finally releases. The frequency of the problem is mixed. Sometimes I can go for an hour with no problem and other times it starts almost immediately. It usually will start with a random delay on strokes, getting worse until the pen is no longer usable.

I've updated Wacom drivers, uninstalled them completely and loaded the latest versions, and even tried prior driver versions. Nothing works and its seriously impacting my workflow. I may have to go back to CS5 until a fix is found.

Just to rule things out: Make a clean user on your computer and run Photoshop to see if it still hangs. You can always delete the user you've created later.

Worked in PS all day and no hangs, the Wacom update seems to have fixed this for me.

Yes, was definitely something to do with the wacom driver - I'm not getting the same problems now; major improvement. I think I may have had one small hang in a day. I am using Intuos 3, so not sure if it applies to more recent Intuos tablets.
