Question

How get two different photos onto two different layers?

I am new to PS and have reviewed several of the tutorials most of which are pretty darn good.  However, several of them start with two different photos on two different layers.  How the heck do I to that so that I can utilize the instruction I just received such as using layer masks to combine images, etc.

Thanks for your time.

You can also do this from Bridge. In bridge select the 2 images you want on different layers. Than under tools/photoshop/load files into photoshop layers and it will open a new document with both images as separate layers

Increase the Canvas size so you have room for both images

There are lots of ways to do this.  But here's my favorite way.

    1. Open both images.
    2. Go to Window > Arrange > Tile All Vertically (or Horizontally) your choice.
    3. Click on one image tab.
    4. Hit Ctrl+A to select all of it.
    5. Hit Ctrl+C to copy it.
    6. Click on the other image tab.
    7. Hit Ctrl+V to paste onto a new layer.

YIkes.  I just cannot get that to work. I import two images into PS. At Step7, the result in only one of the photo in several layers, not a different photo in one layer and the other photo in another layer. Not sure what to do next...

Try this: open photo in Photoshop then go to File > Place Embedded navigate to second image and double click on it. Scale it if needed then confirm.
