How to Automate Cutouts in Photoshop Using AI for Artistic Projects?

Hello! I’m a visual artist working on projects that explore the relationship between the everyday and the artistic through digital editing techniques. I’m currently developing a series where I take everyday objects and repurpose them into abstract compositions.

For this project, I need to optimize my workflow in Photoshop. I work with many photographs of the same object from different angles, and I’d like to know if there are ways to use AI tools or automations (like Actions or Scripts) to cut them out automatically. This would allow me to focus more on the creative aspects of the process.

I’d like to clarify that my question is purely artistic. I’m only looking to enhance my processes to elevate my creations.

Thank you in advance for any advice or resources you can share. Any idea would be greatly appreciated!

Without examples, the generic answer would be an action or script using Select > Select Subject using cloud processing for accuracy vs. local processing for speed, combined with layer masking or copy/paste etc.

Hey there, Welcome to the Photoshop Community.

To automate cutouts in Photoshop using AI for artistic projects, you can utilize the Generative Fill feature. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open your image in Photoshop and select the layer you want to work with.
  2. Use a selection tool (like the Lasso or Quick Selection tool) to select the area you want to cut out.
  3. Click on Generative Fill in the Contextual Task Bar. You can type a prompt to specify what you want to fill the selected area with, or leave it blank to simply remove the content.
  4. Review the generated options and select the one that best fits your artistic vision.
  5. Refine your selection if necessary using the Refine Edge Brush tool to ensure smooth edges, especially around intricate areas like hair or detailed shapes.
  6. Output your selection as a Layer Mask to keep your edits non-destructive, allowing you to adjust them later if needed.
  7. Save your work by exporting the final image in your desired format.

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you for the response, Shivani! However, I believe my request might be a bit more specific. I'm looking for a way to automate the process of detecting and cutting out the same object (for example, a butterfly in motion across 50 photos, at different angles and distances) across multiple images in Photoshop.

My goal is for Photoshop to use AI to recognize the same object consistently and cut it out in all the images, rather than doing this manually for each one.

Does Photoshop have any tools or workflows that could help with this kind of bulk detection and cutout process? If not, is there any script or plugin you’d recommend for this purpose?

Thank you again!
