Question

How to automatically warp images into an irregular grid

Hello everyone, I am working on an illustration of a lizard, and I am manually adding small scales one by one by repeatedly warping one same image of a scale I previously painted. I have attached a video of the process. It is painstakingly slow because there are hundreds of scales like these, so I would like to know if there is a way to do this automatically, or if there's at least an easier approach.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

You could try the following:

  • Make a pattern from your scale image
  • Apply the pattern to a new layer
  • Use a layer mask to hide edges of the pattern fill where you don't need it
  • Use Liquify to add distortion to the scales

The scales have a very precise distribution, therefore I needed to previously draw a grid (as a guide) for the scales to be fit into. But unfortunately this grid is not visible when working with Liquify.

»But unfortunately this grid is not visible when working with Liquify.«

Why don’t you display it in the Liquify Dialog (»Show Backdrop«)?
