Question

How to edit brightness of images

I wish to include my brother in a photograph. When his image is added it appers "brighter" than the other aspects of the photo. How can I "dull" the image so it appears he belongs in the photo? I am also in need of doing the same with some lettering that needs to be added to the photo. Can some one suggest some action I can take? TIA

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

I'd start by matching the white and black points (colour values) of both images using levels or curves:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/adjust-color-tone-levels-curves.html

Tonal contrast in between these value would then follow, potentially trying to match blur/sharpness etc.

My preferred method is nearly always to use the Camera RAW filter as it lets us target specifical tonal ranges like hightlights, shadows, and exposure.  You can also use Clarity, Contrast and Dehaze to match contrast, and Vibrance to fix saturation, and the Temperature & Tint sliders to match colour balance.  Make the layer a Smart Object before starting, so you can keep going back into the filter to fine tune.

You might need to look at the selection you made of your brother.  A common mistake is to have the outline too sharp which makes it stand out and look like it has been added.  This will have been autoimatic if you used Select & Mask to make the selection.

Hi @marks7128949, there are plenty of tutorials online showing how to make adjustments to an added layer using a clipping path. Here is one: https://youtu.be/aLSv7edqnRU.

use an adjustment, like Brightness/Contrast to adjust the Brightness.

You can also use curves. It allows you to play with each color. And then there is Hues, you can adjust with that too. Play around with the adjustments till you get the desired look. Be sure to make a duplicate of your brothers layer to have if you need to try again you will still have the original.

When adding your brother, has his profile been cut out, without a background?

Acrobat is not the best tool for your needs. Use Photoshop to combine images, InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop to add type and save to or export to a new pdf.
