How to focus view on the selected object? Any shortcut?

New Here ,

During my workflow I find myself abusing the Grab tool with the Spacebar whenever I need to move from a part of the canvas to the other side. The canvas is huge because it is a spritesheet for a game and if I'm on let's say the last frame on the last layer and I need to pan to the first frame which happens to be on the leftmost part of the canvas, I would rather prefer to press a shortcut to focus the view instantly on the content of the first layer rather than paning all the way to the left or forcing me to zoom out to see all the canvas and zoom-in on the cursor to go to that side of the canvas.

Is there any shortcut for that to speed up the process?

Hi Fermion,

Thanks for reaching out. We are here to help! Agreed, if you are working on large-scale projects, it can get challenging navigating through.

Please try the following Zoom to layer workflow:

  • Press & hold the ALT key on Windows and OPT key on macOS.
  • Click on the thumbnail of the layer you wish to focus on.

Below is an example. When we click on the layer thumbnail of Running Lady, Photoshop zoomed into the layer as shown on the correct part.

If your workflow has each subject on its layer, these steps might help you. Please let us know if it does.

Thanks!

That's where Zoom tool is handy. Using Zoom tool, you can quickly zoom in into any part of your document with click-and-drag.

Then, you can quickly zoom out using Alt/Opt and click or you can use Ctrl/Cmd+0 to fit in view.

I hope this helps.

Sameer's answer sounds like the best one, if you’re already looking at the Layers panel. All you need to do is Alt-click the layer in the Layers panel. The other suggested alternatives (Zoom tool, Birds Eye, Navigator…) will still force you to hunt for the object by eye; they don't free you from having to manually zoom and scroll around. But with the relatively new Alt-click layer shortcut, if you see your target layer in the Layers panel, you can instantly fill the window with it, no matter where it is or how small it is.
