How to Open Some JPEG Directly into Photoshop While Keeping Default Setting to Open in ACR

Up through Photoshop CC 2017, it was possible to have the ACR preference Automatically Open All Supported JPEGs enabled, but still open one or more JPEGs directly into Photoshop by clicking the Options button in the Open dialog and choosing JPEG. (In those versions, when the aforementioned ACR option was enabled, it would be set to Camera Raw by default.)

In CC 2018 and CC 2019, this does not seem to be possible. Choosing either JPEG (now the default irrespective of ACR preference) or Camera Raw will open it into ACR, and as far as I can determine, the only way to change the behavior is to go into Camera Raw Preferences and change the setting, which is a more laborious process that used to be unnecessary for the described one-off situation.

Is there any way to restore the old behavior — or if not that — to quickly (for instance, by running a script via a key command) quickly toggle the setting?

How can I, if necessary, intitiate a feature request to restore the old behavior, which offered more flexibility?

Yes that is strange that using the same version of camera raw, 11.4 in my case on mac OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan, that photoshop CC 2017.1.7 (ps version 18.1.7) works as you describe, but photoshop cc 2018.1.9 (ps version 19.1.9) shows jpeg instead of camera raw in the open dialog. This applies if the camera raw file handling is set to open with settings or open all jpegs in camera raw.

In photoshop cc 2017 when you click on the jpeg in finder the format defaults to camera raw, but one can change the format to jpeg to get the jpeg to open directly in photoshop without any camera raw adjustments applied.

On the windows side with the same settings in photoshop cc 20.0.6 one can still use File>Open As and select JPEG to bypass camera raw and open with no camera raw settings applied.

Definitly a canidate for reporting over here to see what adobe says.

Well, when I try to open jpg from Photoshop File>open and select JPG format and choose one file it opens in PS directly.

If I check ACR Preferences I see I have (by default, I think) Open JPG files with settings (meaning those jpgs open or edited before in ACR).

To open jpgs files in ACR as it's happening in your system, I think you have had to change default ACR preferences.

BUT, yes you are right that functionality or ability to open only some jpgs in Photoshop when the defauklt setting is set to open them in ACR, is regretfully lacking.
